@@ArtilleryAffictionado1648 Edward Dutton had a very good take on it. In short, a Psychopath vastly overestimates his position in a high trust society due to him getting accustomed to the compliance without substantial pushback during his past schemes, making him believe he could get away with such a move to solidify and expand his position even further. Basically, he pushed it too far due to the inherent lack of self awareness and disregard of consequences psychopaths are famous for. And honestly, you don't need more than that to explain it and I think, at the core, this is what it was, even when there were other (foreign) factors at play here too.

Problem with representative democracy is that strangers, who do not know you, cannot represent you. The premise is simply false. Voting is entering a contract, asking to be ruled by a handful of strangers. Extending them Power Of Attorney, four years into the future ... If you sign that, whatever happens, you have no right to complain, because you accepted the deal. Here is what we should do instead : *Government by lottery* 1000 citizens randomly selected. 200 replacements selected every year, giving five years in government for each. Then perhaps a quarterly online voting session for the rest of us; Yes/No to the bill with slimmest decisive vote, in the 1000-man parlament during that quarter. This setup would be next to immune to many of the problems plaguing our system today ... For example: 1) Four most controversial bills can only be passed/rejected via popular vote. 2) Candidates won't need a party-organisation, media-attention or donors to get elected. So, party leadership, media and money become powerless. 3) Predicting who is likely to get into government is impossible, so special interests have no way of preparing candidates, and no incentives to keep them close post term. 4) All 1000 have incentive to make society better, as they soon return to where they came from. However ... the most impactful difference would probably be the fraction of psychopaths in government, automatically going down to population average (~2%).

I think you're misreading this. It's a cultural thing for Korean/Japanese people. When a leader (can be a company boss for example) makes a mistake, which causes shame to befall a group of which they are a part, they are expected to give an apology like this. It's considered the honourable way forward. Now imagine if our leaders gave sincere apologies.

@giltedgeorge There is more to it. I have relatives in Korea and the gist of it is that the plan to declare martial law was a smokescreen and deliberately leaked (because "protestors" showed up immediately with printed signs calling for the end of martial law) so that the focus would be on the assembly while soldiers raided the office of "election integrity" to collect evidence of fraud and corruption. Ultimately it may have been a sacrifice play by the president to collect that evidence, but that remains to be seen.

It doesn't suprise me that he did this because as others have said, this is standard for eastern asian culture. However, that doesn't absolve Yoon of the fact that he took drastic action ostensibly for the sake of his country, then crumpled at the first sign of adversity. South Korea is only going to be in a worse position moving forward and it's entirely because Yoon is holding on to his liberal priors rather than taking the reigns of power to do what he thought is necessary.

His party got destroyed in the elections and he was anticipating being impeached and potentially imprisoned. If that sounds crazy, it's not. In 2018 the 11th president of Korea Park Geun-Hye was impeached and sentenced to 24 years in prison for "abuse of power." As to why he thought he could get away with it, Korea has been oscillating between democracy and authoritarianism since the war. Yoon would have been a young man during the 5th Korean republic which was a defacto military dictatorship.
