The US has a history of liberalism that is shockingly rarely taught. In the last 5 years I learned about The Business Plot which involved the world's wealthiest men backing a coup to depose FDR, because they didn't want any social spending during the depression. That's to say nothing about the multi-generational segregationist laws in the US that even Hitler said were an inspiration to him. It is insane just how easy it is to tip a democracy in another direction. You really don't get that sense without learning about history and understanding that our current trajectory is not some natural inevitability. Democracy is not something we should just take for granted.

History, Chun orchestrated the 12 December 1979 military coup, then cemented his military dictatorship in the 17 May 1980 military coup in which he declared martial law and later set up a concentration camp for "purificatory education". He established the Fifth Republic of Korea on 3 March 1981. He governed under a constitution somewhat less authoritarian than Park's Fourth Republic, but still held very broad executive power, and used extreme violence to maintain it.

I was stunned when I saw Korean martial law broke out. At first, I thought NK had done something. Thank goodness it was short lived. I hope and pray Korea doesn’t turn into American.
