Lindsay Jenney I think the reasoning, that desperate mothers wouldn`t abandon the babies, if he didn`t provide a place to put the babies, is flawed. As was shown in the documentary, they try to stop the mothers and talk them out of it, and some come back after a while and change their minds. What`s the alternative? It`s naive to think that the women wouldn`t get rid of the babies in some other way.

Maybe some of you are confused by my post. I support the pastor and his work. The single mothers in korea facebook group does not. I was doing a charity drive of diapers for the pastor and was kicked out of the unwed mothers group bc i was helping a man that they believe is harming the orphans. Its a long story and has to do with these orphans not having registered birth certs bc the mothers dont register the birth. This causes SERIOUS problems for that child in the future. The unwed mothers charity group blames the pastor for letting this happen rather than the govt for shuttung out unregistered korean children... they end up not being allowed into public schools or get a bank account or govt recognition as a citizen of their own country. Unwed mother group actively tries to derail and criminalize the pastors efforts.

No matter. This non support has to change. Would people prefer that the babies be abandoned in the streets and left to die!? What the heck is the matter with people? The laws need to change #1 so that every human being has a birth certificate (government) Leave the pastor alone for doing God's work. Use all of that energy to change government laws.

@@eb7446 it is not irrational. the south koreans are a cohesive culture that has not been infiltrated with marxist/communist ideology and they have intact families there. Western society is now failed due to the low morals and breakdown caused by that.

@@1ireneaustin Idealy, raising a child with two parents is best, I totally agree. But the woman didn't have a choice and she raised her son well. Otherwise, he would have ended up in an orphanage... Why trying to find him a new family when he lready has one...? And being raised in a two parents household isn't always perfect...before thinking about wanting a child and what he could bring to you, you should try thinking about what you could give to him... and she gave him a home. The perfect family doesn't exist, you do best with what you have. Western society is far from being perfect but one parent family households are deffinitly not the cause... What are your moralities?? It can never be stupidity. Do you know how difficult it can be for adopted children to know that they were given away, even if it was for a good reason? The heartache, the endless wondering and questions about who you really are. Even if your adoptive family are the very best, everyone has a yearning inside them to know who they truly are, who they look like, where their characteristics and attitude comes from. When your parent or parents choose to raise you in spite of the odds stacked against them, you get the chance of growing up with your real family which is a truly wonderful gift.

This is so sad and it's even sadder to see that the pastor receives so much hate for doing this for the single moms. I saw a tv show on Netflix about single Korean moms called *Love and Marriage*. I watched without believing this about the South Korean culture, surely, it wasn't that bad for single moms in a first world country. But then I saw this documentary and others. I never knew South Korea was this much of a backwards place. It is absolutely disgusting to see new moms and single moms in general have to live so much heartbreak. It isn't just their lives that would be ruined if they kept the baby, the baby will have a horrible life too if the mom kept him/her. Horrible.

This is common in East Asia--Japan, China, Korea, Taiwan and even in other parts of Asia because of conservative cultures. Adoption is also frowned upon because the bloodline is so important. This is the reason why a son is more precious than a daughter in most Asian families. But that is another story.

The irony is, that due to long 'working' hours, adultery and alcoholism, most children in a Korean family dynamic will only see their fathers once a week or on weekends anyway. The mother and teachers are more involved than the fathers in the up-bringing of most children in Korea. That's a topic for another 101 east doco though.

Only a superficial form of capitalism exists in the country. You want cultural capitalism? surprise yourself and go to China. The reason why there's so much misery in this video is because of the Confucianism. in Korea that has always placed women as second citizens. High suicide rates - ALSO the factor of "shame and humiliation" again derived from Confucianism.

I am surprised korean men are abandoning their kids. i am of asian background and i know if any man in my family got a girl pregnant. my family would've forced him to marry her. i always just thought other asian families where the same because we do have conservative and strict beliefs that if you have a child. you automatically have to marry the person. so this surprises me that the men's families are not pressuring the man to step up or be involved.

@Orange-teeth I am surprised as well about Korean men abandoning their kids. In eastern Asian culture, men are more responsible when it comes to getting a women pregnant. If not, then their parents like you said will force the son to marry and take care of the women, he got pregnant. It makes me suspect, did some of the women that got pregnant not know who the father is because they had a one night stand with a stranger they met at the bar or somewhere? Regardless the government should provide better assistance to these single moms.

Korean men constantly abandon children of women they are not married to. Korea has an abortion doctor on every block regardless of it technically being illegal. In my neighborhood in Seoul, "hooker hill" is directly behind the police station. Hookers in windows selling themselves. Prostitution is also illegal. But...like abortion, not REALLY illegal. So, men expect the women to get an abortion. They would leave a woman that refused. How dare a woman disobey a korea man? Women in korea are subservient to all men..when they defy...they get thrown away, along with any unwanted baby.

Asian countries are paternalistic societies. When the U.S. army was in Korea and Vietnam. Children without fathers were looked down on. Sons inherit from their father not only wealth but place in society. If they had no father they had no place in society. Those values have to change. The value of a human life is equal.
@ComedyLoverGirl
@ComedyLoverGirl 7 жыл бұрын
To be honest, that was also the attitude in the west until the last century. In older times in the English-speaking world, illegitimate children couldn't inherit property and often would not be allowed to use the surname of their father - i.e. they were disowned. In Asian countries, children without fathers are indeed disadvantaged because they often live in poverty because fathers are the breadwinners. Also, there's an inherent stigma against unwed mothers because it implies that they were sexually promiscuous. This is mostly to children whose parents never married. I know a person who hasn't got a father because his died soon after he was born. These types of kids aren't looked down against - the stigma is more to mothers who never married. But yes, I agree, children should not be discriminated against for what their parents did. Discrimination is only one problem that fatherless children face: bad upbringings, poverty and broken homes are larger concerns that are almost universal to single-parent children.

Women give up their babies for many reasons. My sister was born to a 16 year old who knew she couldn't provide for a child so she willingly gave her to our parents. She now has a wonderful life and was given a lot more opportunities than she would have had with a teenage mother who was also very poor. Her bio mom is very happy with how she turned out and they occasionally talk, but she considers our parents as her "real" mom and dad. I honestly wish more women would consider adoption. There are so many people out there who desperately want kids and can't have them, and so many women, like my sister's bio mom, who just can't provide for them but choose to keep them anyway and both mother and child end up miserable. I understand it's hard to give up a child that you love but sometimes you need to do what's best for them. There are such things as open adoptions.

You should look into how Korean babies are systematically sold to the west to get money. The young mothers are more or less coerced to sell their unborn child. Western countries "demands" that a certain amount of Korean child must be available for their citizens to buy, its an agreement that Korea had made with USA and EU. Its proper childselling industry. In South Korea, its a huge moneymaking business were everybody, except you the merchandise, get a piece of the cake. In Korean newspapers international adoption is described as a win-win were "unwanted" and "unintelligent" children can be shipped out of Korea, and Korea get money for it. You must understand that its not a coincidence, nor is it a good deed that you were "adopted", its an industry with a turnover of billions of USD. Its a huge huge moneymaking industry and mostly legalized. It also is a deeply malechauvinist society where the supply of young children and girls is demanded. Its a slavestructure and I erge you too look into it, if you re really interested in why you were adopted. International adoption perpetuates the powerless situation for Korean women. Even if you get mad with what I am saying, I earge you to look into it deeply bc the truth is truly horrifying and the West perpetuates the continuous violations of Asian women is truly terrifying.

wow, I'm really shocked actually about the fact that in a technically supermodern country like South Korea it is possible at the same time that women and their children are treated so badly, left alone, being blamed and shunned by society. I'm friends with a Korean woman for several years now and we do talk about personal and critical issues and she already suggested very often how extremely high the negative pressure for young women is there these days, be it about jobs, a very disturbed artificial beauty image or this old-fashioned pressure of the families for them to marry at a certain age, no matter who, or if they like him, just so the family is not embarrassed. That is horrible enough, but I didn't know to this day the extent of what happens to women when they get pregnant and are single. This pastor is a good person, and I am shocked again to read in other posts that other Korean women hate and blame him for offering help instead of questioning their almost middle-aged system and laws as well as anti-social behaviour towards those who need help. As I know from my friend many Koreans are Buddhists and I really wonder how they then bring together the main and basic idea of this religion - which is empathy! - and their cruel, cold behaviour to those affected and in need of help. What a horrible thing and it shows a lot of what is going on inside people for real, no matter if they call themselves Buddhists, they certainly are not. And one has to wonder why the Korean state punished those totally innocent - the children born by these mothers, by not letting them register, stigmatising them and ruining their lives in the worst case. Absolutely shocking.

glek023612 I have children from three women and I’ve supported all of them financial and have started to pay for higher education of three of them so far. I don’t have vices to waste money on. I do a high level technical job with circuits and run a lawn care and snow removal business on the side and always entertain at my home. We spend all the holidays together (including the mothers) and attend Church every Sunday (I’m an atheist btw). I give everything to them because I live them all and I’m friends with these women. I basically live to take care and provide for them.

Why Bee I don't live in the US, so I don't know how it is there but I meant the mobbing of single mothers for no reason at all in korea even if they are able to take care of their children just fine all by them selves (I did not mean the baby box). That is a mindset from the middle ages for me. It is like even a grown woman with a job is worth nothing without a man. She is not allowed to have a child when she wants to. How are koreans not ashamed to be like that? I mean they travel everywhere. Don't they see how in other countries single moms contribute to society?
@whybee1217
@whybee1217 7 жыл бұрын
Mondoshawn I understand that but I was addressing your overstatement that you can't look at SK as a first world country anymore because of that. I'm merely pointing out that comparable if not worse situations occur in countries like the U.S., would you say the same about them?

Not excusing that behavior in any way, but an employer might not hire single mothers as they are usually the only person to care for the child whenever a child is sick, has some sort of problems at school etc. This way she might not focus on her work as much as her employer expects her to. That being said, single mothers are usually the hardest working people I've ever met and there is some sort of sexist/misogynistic mindset behind such treatment of women too.

The Korean government does offer welfare for single moms - watch the whole documentary. They don't get much but it's still better than nothing. It's Not lack of wealth that these babies are being abandoned, they are being left because of South Korea's patriarchal society that stigmatize single, unwed mothers and their children. As a teacher at a public school here in Korea - that 10 year old boy could easily be one of my students. I can't speak on behalf of any Korean teachers however in my school we know the students who have issues in their personal lives. We know students who get bullied and why. Even me, as the foreigner who is usually cut out of things like this. Fortunately my close co-workers are very much in agreement with me that this kind of behavior towards a child who's not to blame - is 100% unacceptable. Maybe its because they are a younger generation of Korean teachers. I feel so bad for that little boy. If he was in my class, he would at least have one classroom in which he is protected. Most often Korean teachers fear interfering too much behaviorally due to backlash from parents, so I predict that's why he was beaten up at school (unless it was outside of class time). As for the Professor - MAN she hit the nail on the head there. I have had the hardest time adjusting to life here because this place looks modern, feels modern, feels democratic, feels progressive - until you get knocked down with widely held social opinions that seem like they're from 100 years ago. It's quite a mind bomb and often unexpected. Especially just how bad treatment of women can actually be here. I never ever would have guessed. I love this country and I love living here. This is my home. However, as someone who used to be on the outside, I never could have realized these things until I moved here. I can only hope that Korea catches up socially and quick. I can already tell the generations in their teens and twenties think MUCH differently than their parents. I'm talking extreme, stark differences. However the poor mother who's friends abandoned her - I can imagine the scenario being "my parents think you're xyz so I am no longer your friend." Most young people I've met dont hold fast to such antiquated beliefs anymore. However, stating an opinion and standing up for it in Korea or standing out at all is something most average Koreans would rather die than do. Especially against their parents. The cycle is really never ending. I'd be really curious to see where Korea will be in 50-100 years socially.

Even if I never had a father in my life, I was never discriminate d because of that, I indeed would like to have lived a life with my father, but you know you cannot miss someone you haven't had, so you can deal with no having a father, I never wished to have a father I only wished to have my house and live with my mum (I lived in my grandparents' house) It's disgusting the way Korean culture treats single mums, It's not anyone's wish to be a single mum, but if so it happens, isn't it the best to keep going ahead with your baby? EDIT: Let's say their parents have a tough relationship, and the father cheates on the mum, isn't it better for the mum to raise alone their children? Instead of having to deal with such a vile man? It will be even better for the children!!!

This culture is so weird! Each life is precious, no matter the means or circumstances surrounding the conception.

It is precisely because life is precious that this happens. The mum gets rid of the baby so that she can have a life...

JAchica11 This is korea. Where children of the same father used to be able to be in completely different social classes. I hope not only korean but world wide society catches up.

I praise all single mothers and my mom was a single mother basically when I was 5 years old and up because our dad left because they had an argument. I watched he left and now that I am about to turn 16 I saw him last year in NY, he then wanted to spend Christmas with us but we was against it. He made his choice and it’s not the same anymore. Single mothers are the strongest people on earth.

This needs to change? These moms love their babies more than themselves. Kudos to the sick grandfather who wanted to take care of his granddaughter. Babies are a blessing no matter how they are conceived. Make the fathers pay.

Unwed mothers are common in the United States. The stigma went away a long time ago. These children are human beings and they deserve to be loved by the mothers that gave birth to them. If the father does not want to be involved then so be it. I feel very sad that South Korea does not accept those beautiful children. I wish that they could see that they are still children of God and he is the ultimate father and will NEVER abandon them or shun them in any way. I will hold Koreans in my prayers so that they may open their minds and hearts and make a change for the sake of those precious children and their mothers and what is up with the government there? Why are they not providing enough money for the unwed mothers? When people are that poor and only receive a tiny amount to take care of the child they become desperate and may do things that are unlawful or commit suicide from mental anguish. Open your eyes Korea. If these things are happening then these girls/women need birth control education to prevent pregnancy. Teach your men what a condom is in their early teens. Have these young people do what some American schools do and get the dolls that are like real babies and teach them a good lesson on how hard it is to take care of a baby. Human lives matter, especially babies. They need to be molded into caring, productive adults that are educated that human lives matter.
