Sky news, why is the defence and security analyst the one discussing South Korean Domestic issues? I was there last week and saw the protests going on and couldn't find a whiff online about what was going on in the British press. I've a lot of respect for Michael Clarke but his comments here don't chime with the conversations I had with people there. Perhaps it'd be an idea to have someone explaining what's going on with a bit more expertise on South Korea.
@soggymoggytravels3 сағат бұрын
I agree. His comment near the beginning that South Korean citizens feel a connection to North Korean citizens is inaccurate. According to many street interviews in South Korea, many Koreans, especially younger Koreans, feel ambivalent toward North Koreans, and many Koreans generally welcome a harder stance against the DPRK regime because of the continuous threats made by Kim Jong Eun.

It is a functional democracy because the president 's martial law decree could be overturned only because the MPs present at the national assembly unanimously voted to void it, forcing the president to back down. The National Assembly is controlled by his opponents. Besides, South Korea has a history of military dictatorships, so the people wouldnt stand for another one. If this were some other country, the military would have prevailed.

Nonsensical gibberish. South Korea has the right to exist. It shouldn't be destroyed from within by traitors sympathetic to North Korea.

The soldiers (the most advanced troops of s.korea) left apologizing and giving hugs to the civilians tried their best to not hurt anyone and cause any damage. The lawmakers climbed the fence to gather in the national assembly at midnight within 1.5 hr of declaration and lifted the martial law. They should recover this so other countries can learn from it

I see that experts are again thinking about the region as they did 10 years ago. The truth is that things are very different from before. In reality, the parliament in Korea is run by the Democratic Party, which has repeatedly stated openly that it is pro-Chinese. The Philippines is used as a troll factory by China because of its good command of English and cheap labor, and this shows that the dependence on China is significantly greater than America thinks. Most of the venture capitalists through whom Chinese money is funneled and companies in other countries are secretly bought are registered in Indonesia (this is the case with the ownership of Kakao, which apparently is now owned by Tencent). Apparently, Chinese money has been in Indonesia for a long time and it is also dependent on them. It is clearly seen that China is protecting of Vietnamese communist families who live in Australia and probably also exerts influence in Vietnam through them. I do not think that the region is subordinate to America in the way that Washington thinks. A lot has changed in recent years, including Yoon and the fact that he now seems out of control also doesn't speak well for analysts overseas in America! I think “things” are totally out of control, it's just hard to admit!

The Republic of Korea is a Western ally of the United States, but approximately 30% of its population is reportedly aligned with pro-China, far-left ideologies. The parliament is largely dominated by a pro-China, far-left party that is perceived to act against South Korean interests. The recent failed martial law attempt by President Yoon appears to be a desperate effort to secure the future of a freedom-loving Korea and to maintain a strong alliance with the U.S. This situation has arisen largely due to the negligence of the Biden administration, which has allowed the pro-China far-left party to operate without restraint, thereby deepening concerns about the security of the Korea-U.S. alliance. What would basic human rights mean for us if Korea ceases to be a free country under Chinese rule or the control of a group of thugs in the current Parliament who do not respect the rule of law? This situation is a calculated failure by President Yoon, serving as a wake-up call to the Trump administration: there will be no alliance with the U.S. if the current state of Korea continues.

Please ignore this pathetic idiot. Nobody in South Korea is pro-China or pro-North Korea. Pro-China or Pro-North Korea is a typical accusation when dictators are trying to suppress their opponents. Yoon Suk Yeol and his wife are considered to be engaged with bribery scandals. Inspite of enough evidence, the prosecutors who are under the control of the presidnet refused to investigate or prosecute Yoon and his wife. Yoon declared this unconstitutional illegal martial law only to protect himself and his wife from prosecution.
