Japan has its own version of such things. It’s not that she wouldn’t “get” identity politics, it’s just that her context for race jokes is based on a completely different cultural background. Identity politics in Japan has more to do with historical tribe, bloodline, millennia-long feuds with China and Korea, etc and almost nothing to do with skin color which is why the difficulty slider joke went over her head. An appropriate “translation” of the slider joke might be making the left side “Pure Yamato” and the right side “Ainu” or maybe “North Korean” for a more modern flair. It’s not quite the same, the joke really just doesn’t work in a Japanese cultural context. It’s close though.
