I was loosely “home schooled” as a child, mostly math and English. And I learned the rest reading books. I most often felt like these nervous kids when going out or when I was put into foster care at 14. I didn’t grow out of my nervousness until I was 32 and put on Lexipro. It’s been 4 years on the medication but I’ve never felt more comfortable with myself.

No Spelling Bees aren't that big a thing in small towns, not High School Graduation Night, thats a different story, half the town tries to show up for those for some reason, not long after I graduated they shifted from a Friday Night to a Saturday Morning and started requiring Tickets to get in and each graduate got a certain number of tickets for family members.

Spelling bees arent uniquely american but the first recognized spelling bee was in the US and its much more popular in the US than elsewhere. They are optional and help kids at least a little learn basic spelling
