We got a $20 bidet attachment for our toilet when the toilet paper shortage happened 3 years ago. It is amazing. I feel genuinely clean, and I haven't had another hemorrhoid. U.S. citizens are really missing out by not using bidets. While we still have TP in the house, usage is dramatically less. It definitely paid for itself many times over already. And they banned her email account or her internet for the rest of her trip. So she didnt have a way of contacting anyone back home. it was prolly late 90s early 2000s but I remember her saying they are very strict about criticism even tho she didnt say anything really bad. And she was like they must read all outgoing messages because how else would they know. When you said they had bad toilet paper that was my first thought.

I do not live in Japan myself, but here in Finland every toilet/washroom is equipped with a “bidet” shower head next to the toilet seat, so you can use it if you like in place of in addition to paper. Hence, I do not use sole toilet paper any more, as it is quite unhygienic. I just use the shower for cleaning. When travelling, I always miss the water option. I feel dirty if having to use paper now.

I have one of these. The seats are heated, ambient lighting, bidet and dryer. You really don't need toilet paper much. Just very little to tap dry. Just think of how much paper you would use after washing your hands and drying under a blower. Not much. Also, if your toilet is not completely broken, you can just buy the seat and bidet which hardly costs $200. Still does the same things, lighting, warming seats, bidet and dryer.

I was interested to know what the various bits of Japanese were, it's been a revelation watching these with you the past year and realising there was so much that wasn't just sound-alike or gibberish, but actual Japanese that contributed to the jokes. Honestly this episode makes me want to go and check the stats they gave because usually South Park are onto something, even if they're making it a joke, like Fremium Isn't Free where they pointed out the predatory practices of these games, or Crack Babies where they showed how unfair the college football system was for how they treated their athletes.

I was stationed in Japan back in the 90s. I kid you not, I have on several occasions walked into to their bathrooms to use the toilet...and there wasn't one. There was nothing but a small square closet sized room, and an uncovered drain in the floor. You literally walk in, piss on the floor, and walk out.

Like most people, I grew up with using toilet paper. But I gotta say, when I had my bidet installed on my toilet, it was a game changer. I will never go back to using toilet paper.

As usual, love your reactions and culture references. :) I remember the first time I used these toilets on business trips to Japan, was shocked by them lol You are totally accurate about the glassy paper in Japan Out of interest, what do you do in Japan?

I used to use around a roll per week. I've been using a bidet for the past year and have only used like half a roll since then to dry off
