What's even stranger is that usually, street running trains only run about about 10-20mph, INCREDIBLY slowly. But here, the train is running at ALMOST the same speed you'd see it on a regular track.

@Gdddghhrwscbkjgesdcc9 жыл бұрын
Because this is primarily a commuter rail line and has been there since the 1920s, the traffic lights are controlled by the trains. There are no crossing gates at the intersections. The "locals" are used to the trains and not scared by them. The main industry in town is a prison.

I've seen other videos of this rail line where the drivers pull to the side and stop to let the train pass. Similar to letting a medic/fire/police vehicle pass when they have their sirens on.

I didn't think you could even run a freight train line straight down a residential road, 1 lane of passenger traffic on both sides of the rail. The rural Midwest, I suppose.

Back in the day streetcars and interurban trolleys were all the rage. Both of these types of trains were very often found running down the street making stops at intervals so that locals could easily reach their destinations, like the grocery store or the pharmacy. Most of these lines were simply shut down and the rails were paved over or torn out and the infrastructure left to decay. The South Shore, since its conception as a similarly designed passenger line padded with occasional electric freight service in the Victorian era, hasn't really changed all that much (except for the equipment, of course.) Their sister lines, The North Shore and the Chicago, Aurora and Elgin, however, are long gone and the city has simply turned them into bicycle paths and hiking trails. A sad thing.

Both diesel freight locomotives and passenger electric trains use the tracks on the streets - and have since around 1900. Folks living in Michigan City, Ind., are used to it and it doesn't present any real problems. However, with the rules in place for positive control track systems the end is coming for this really cool bit of railroad history. Dual tracks systems are going to be installed, many intersections will be closed and the streets turned into cul de sacs, and many homes will be leveled. It will shorten travel times for the passenger lines, which run from South Bend, Ind., to Chicago.

Yes. The commuter rail is electric powered. Up until around the 1980s, freight was also pulled by electric locomotives. On the East end of town, there was the Nickel Plate. The connection between the NP and the current Amtrak owned tracks were torn up in the 1990s. During the first Gulf War, these tracks carried many military trains. Imagine driving beside that!
