The de facto leader of Syria’s new administration took a conciliatory approach when speaking about his country’s future in a wide-ranging interview with BBC News on December 18, 2024. Abu Mohammad al-Golani said Syria’s numerous sects would work together to move the country forward. But he said success would depend on the West lifting sanctions imposed on the country during the rule of ousted leader Bashar al-Assad.

Syria is blessed with abundant fertile lands, water, great weather and kind people, but again, it all depends on how honest, moderate and genuine its new leaders are. If they are smart and intelligent they will adopt the path of moderation, one that will adopt democracy and freedom and allow the rights of minorities to live and worship freely without being persecuted or discriminated against. Same goes for the rights of women to be given equal opportunities. Syria is culturally rich and diverse, this is what makes the fabric of Syria's society so dynamic and vibrant. Now as confidence begins to build, though slowly but surely, many Syrian expats and refugees coming back home will bring with them their experiences and knowledge plus the capital they accrued and acquired in the Diaspora to benefit the rebuilding of Syria into a modern and progressive nation. Syria has the potential to become the leading banking hub in the region plus being the leading service industry, tourism, health and education center as well. It all depends on the path Syria takes, we all pray that Islamic radicalism and fundamentalism will not destroy the new Syria, the people of Syria have had more than enough of sufferings, pain, humiliation and wars, Syria's time is now, let the new Syria be what we're all praying, the shining star of the Middle East.
