I was brought up in Thundersley and regularly visited Southend as a child/ young person. I moved away in 1978 and have only returned once in over 40 years. The seafront is beyond all recognition to me now and the pier off which I used to fish is almost alien to me. There was a small station at the pier head for the trains which back in the day looked a little like London Underground trains but in green and cream livery. The Kursaal was a popular entertainment venue and I saw Deep Purple and Sparks live there. The pier used to have a theatre and arcades at the end and was lit up so that from the shore it looked like a ship. The cliff side leading up to pier hill had illuminated scenes from fairy tales and was known as Never Never Land and the foreshores had illuminations almost as good as Blackpools. At the shore end of the pier was a mock up of the Golden Hind ship which you could visit and a mechanical scene of a pirate being tortured with a swinging axe! Not so PC really.I liked Southend a lot and have great memories of and am glad see it thriving and developing. Thanks for making the video Regards SW

Thanks for the update on Southend, Tim. I was born and lived there 60+ years ago when Adventure Island was called Peter Pan's Playground and on the other side of the pier was a replica of Sir Francis Drake's Ship Golden Hind. The beaches in those days were shingle, not a grain of sand to be seen anywhere. But the pier is still there to be walked along, which I recommend, especially when the tide is in and it feels as if you are walking on water. I'm strongly tempted to make a return visit for old times sake.

I now live in Blackpool and come from East London "They say home is where your heart is" and I often ask myself why is the rest of my body in the North - From my childhood through my teens into my later life Southend-on-sea was my go to place the discos on a friday night and the beach with my kids on a weekend so missed - I'm in my late 70s now, and as I said I live in Blackpool now but it is nothing like Southend (My home sweet home).

Hi Pete. My parents used to take my sister and me to Blackpool during a Scottish bank holiday known as the September Weekend. I think half of Scotland were in Blackpool on that weekend every year. They moved us to Essex to be close to London for work reasons in 1988. Thankfully they picked Southend on Sea. I've been here since then....34 years now. I love my town. How is Blackpool now? What's it like mate?

@@chuckmaddison2924 Yes from what I can remember, originally it was called Peter Pan's Playground and it was just on the right hand side of the pier if you face towards the pier and the water. Believe me Suzy, it's really, really not. Ok'ish for a day out in the summertime. But it's basically a total ****hole. Poor, rough and often very violent.

@@spiritof6986 Sounds a lot like Great Yarmouth.... but somehow people still enjoy their day or evening out there. Norwich has its 'poor rough and violent' too, especially recently... not such a safe place to be as it was... but would I say it's a ****hole... no... it's life. I think you will find, 'poor rough and violent' is going to become a lot more common.

@@suzyhazelwood9942 Hi again Suzy. It's a shame, but you're right about Norwich. I moved here 17yrs ago and it was one of,if not THE safest city I'd lived in anywhere in the whole of the UK. It's changed, but it's still not Southend. I lived in Southend for 10yrs and hated it. Very few parks, overcrowded and regardless of the changes (like you said, it's everywhere and aye, it's getting worse),the atmosphere in Norwich is still a lot more laid back than Southend. As for Yarmouth,I cannae speak from experience. Only been there for a day out on the beach a few times.

One of my haunts in the 60's they used to have a Bowling Alley at the end of the pier but over the years the pier has had fires and now looks nice anyway, Westclffe and Thorpe Bay are the nicest parts if you want to get away from the busy part of Southend.

It used to be the longest pier in the world before the arson attack. So now its just the longest pleasure pier yes. I used to love Southend during the 90s & 00s, it was so alive especially in the summertime. I like that casino along the seafront and the arcades

That pier is unbelievably long! The maintenance bill must be huge, a great feat of engineering. A stunning view looking back at the coast from the end.

Another great video Tim, I did expect you to show us the Casino too..... Love those aerial shots of the pier, it's a great park Adventure Island, some of the friendliest ride operators. The location of Jamie and Jimmy's Cafe that you popped in serves a fab hot choc with all the bits in but at 36c an ice cream more appropriate. Such a shame that large building at the end of the pier couldn't be put to better use.

Thank you for an excellent review and positive overview of Southend. Sadly parts of the cliff are being built on leaving Southend with less and less greenery. On the flip side I read that the council is about to invest further and more ships will be connecting to Southend much like they would have in the past. Kind regards

I used to live in Southend in late 70's early 80's. Was a much shabbier affair then, especially the pier which was in a sad state, but had so much more at the end of it, at least till the fire that is. And weirdly, you walked past one of my cousins on the pier who still live there. LOL

Thanks for posting Tim - great vid. Out of interest at 9.50 the area now called The Shrubbery was once called Never Never Land, you show some of the old models still in place. As a kid in the late 50s, early 60s it was a magical place, the area was floodlit at night and with the seafront illuminations you didn't want to go home!
