Southern California man pursuing degree at UC Irvine after serving time for murder

After serving prison time for murder, Shawn Khalifa, now out of prison, is pursuing a college degree at UC Irvine. NBCLA’s Hetty Chang reports on Feb. 15, 2024.

@@Jeanne90275 This might be an extreme case with someone actually being convicted of murder. Most students with records usually serve time for lesser charges and this program serves them too. And a lot times you still have to apply and compete with other applicants. It's not like these spots are just being handed out. A lot times, these former felons put in the work at a community college, get there fundamentals, then apply for a 4 year college. I know someone who went to a CC while on parole and eventually got into a Cal Poly. Straight A student. He definitely earned his spot. Im sure this guy did too. Consider that this kinds of people come from bad homes. He's probably not even the same person he was when he commited that murder. He clearly served his time and felt remorse. I think the dude can use a second chance, especially considering he actually wants to be a better person.

He didn’t actually kill anybody. He was charged under California’s Felony Murder Rule which allowed people who didn’t commit harm to be convicted of 1st degree murder. That law has since change and why he is home.

So let me get this straight, someone who always did the right thing, has always behaved, has a good criminal record and has never got in trouble with the law but doesn't have a high GPA can't get in to UCI, but a convicted murderer convict CAN? Make that make sense.....🤦‍♂️

You do realize most of those kids were fed high hopes for their low performance. I see their high GPA from their no name, easier high school with no exceptional extracurriculars curriculum vitae, and I can tell “yeah this one’s gonna cry despite having done nothing remarkable.” Do imagine kids that 1 billion more in overpopulation happened. Your competition is with them - not some phantom fake parents.

The nerve that you have to criticize him. If the victim's family does not have any problem, then it is not your place to say anything. He is young & has a long road ahead of him. Do you want him to recommit a crime? He is making a lot of efforts to be a changed man. So shut!

Good God, someone who is turning his life around, and instead of being proud of this young man for what he is becoming, he is still put down. And this is why we have so many criminals. They try to do the right thing after coming out and people do not want that either.

exactly he did his time (what the state recommended he do for his crime) and wants to do good by his life now yet people continue to put him down isnt the point of prison rehabilitation so an offender can reintegrate into society?
