Yep, I'm originally from the Pacific Northwest, and my dad was from the deep south. He introduced us to grits, first with LOTS of butter then he thought since we were northerners, we would prefer sugar and milk. I liked neither. The only way I'll eat grits is if they're whipped with cheese and a touch of jalapeno.

Sugar grits are definitely a northern thing. My dad’s side is from Maryland, Virginia, and North Carolina and they all do cheese grits or salt and pepper w/ fried fish. My mom’s side is from Ohio and Michigan and they all do sugar and butter sometimes with sausage or bacon. I love both equally but grew up with my mom so sugar grits have a special place in my heart.

Haha, same here. I used to hate them, but now I like black eye peas. I've yet to find a tasty recipe for vegetarian collard greens, though. (Sacrilege, I know! 😜)

bluexwings For thanksgiving, my grandmother put a little vinegar in the collard greens for me because Im vegetarian. Idk how it compares cause i never noticed a meat taste in the first place and its been almost 10 years since i had meat

CcakeAsh I'll have to try that! I've been a vegetarian for 13 years now, but my Southern family members still don't quite accept it. 😂 They also don't get that even broth or gravy can upset my stomach at this point. "I swear, your cooking is wonderful, Great Aunt Mabel, I just can't eat stuff with meat in it!" lol

Pulled pork sandwiches in my house were a staple. But it was cooked fully in the juice/broth/sauce. And what me and my dad would do. Was we would put the pork in a bowl and mix into it mayo and mustard, and then I’d put cole slaw on the bun with it. SO GOOD
