Southern Ocean Sportsboat Sailing! Racing our Thompson 590 at the 2025 Portland Regatta!

In this episode we go sailing on the fringes of the Southern Ocean at the 2025 Portland Regatta, on Victoria’s Shipwreck Coast. With all of my boats out of action, I thought I would jump on my Dad’s Thompson 590 Sportsboat, designed by Steve Thompson in the early 2000’s. This is a super rare boat, which proves perfect for the unique combination of both tactical harbour racing and downwind blasting on the open ocean. We battle a broken boat in race one, you’ll have to watch the video to find out if we can fix it! This fantastic regatta hosted by the Portland Yacht Club features so many interesting boats, including Elliott Trailer Sailors, SB20 Sports Boats, RS Aeros, Viper F16 Catamarans, RL24’s, Fireballs, Flying Fifteens and More!

Another good watch here Tom, thanks for taking us on this one ! I've sailed against SB20's over here in the UK at a Lake called 'Bala' they hold seasonal regattas (I will try to get one uploaded), I was in my supernova single hander and safe to say they dwarfed me.. cool to see it from this perspective up with the big boys!
