Southern Pacific 4-6-2 2472 operates on a number of specials on the Niles Canyon Railway. This SP P-8 "Pacific" was operated by the Golden Gate Railroad Museum in cooperation with Pacific Locomotive Association.

Before her tourist career at Niles Canyon, she did main line excursions in the 90's, and before that, commuter service in the SF Bay Area and hauling the Overland Limited at high speeds between Reno and Salt Lake City.

She truly is gorgeous. My favourite SP Loco one of my top 3 favourite Pacifics. She is a pretty Engine with a good bark and whistle. 2472 always has been so immaculate, until the last overhaul sporting chromed cylinder heads and stars, truly gorgeous.

Southern Pacific 2472 is a handsome 4-6-2 "Pacific" type steam locomotive and is one of my favorite Pacific types that are still in existence, SP 2472 is an impressive example of SP passenger service steam power and a surviving example of the once great roster of SP steam engines.

There are no plans to restore 4460. The 2472 and 4449 did doublehead twice for Railfair '91 and the 1992 NRHS Convention.

I hope she'll return to steam again one day speaking of which I heard the Niles canyon railway is moving but I'm still seeing videos from that place and after watching it it looks like that the place isn't moving at all !? Now since 2472 hasn't operated since 2015 I'm thinking it's either retired from running, is in storage or waiting for an overhaul since I can't find an answer for it on KZbin or online

Niles Canyon isn't going anywhere. The 2472 and GGRM collection is supposed to move. The 2472 is apparently still certified, but no runs until it moves.

I just said Niles Canyon is going nowhere, but the GGRM collection is. It is supposed to go to a new operation, a move that has been delayed a few times. The 2472 is perfectly fine to operate, even though it hasn't since 2015.

Driver size tends to be the big factor. The 2472 has 73" drivers, designed more to handle fast accelerating passenger trains. A similar size engine with smaller drivers is better for heavier freight.

P10 has a slightly bigger boiler and cylinders. 2472's cousin 2479, or "Zack" as I call him, is a P-10.
