See Southern Pacific 5011, at the beginning of this video? It was another steam locomotive that was originally going to be preserved. But was sadly scrapped instead, in my imaginational vision if 5011 wasn’t scrapped and preserved to this day. It could’ve been in operation at the Grand Canyon Railway in Williams, Arizona.

2:30: This is the overnight Owl from LA, not the SJ Daylight. Note sleeper on the rear. 2:48: Mail train (rider coach). 4:45: All SP passenger cars except the Budd Sunset Ltd cars were made of Cor-Ten steel, not fluted stainless. Stainless does not hold paint well, anyway. 6:24: That old combine car was used only Lathrop-Sacramento, not to LA. Was used for local psgrs and baggage. 8:50: That's a Sunset Limited "Audobon Diner." You can tell by the bird decorations on the walls.

Were the ends of passenger consists always as open as portrayed ? I've see such in some of your other videos.

Open dutch door? Yes, for the benefit of the rear brakeman.
