These Class III short lines aren't exactly rolling in money. My assumption is that so far it's been less costly for the E&LS to pay the costs of rerailing locomotives and cars, and then repairing just the damaged portion of the rails and roadbed than to pay for complete repair to significant portions of the roadbed and rails. For comparison, so far the Napoleon, Defiance, and Western short line, now owned by Pioneer Rail, has spent $41,877,000 to rehabilitate 58 miles of track to minimum Class I standards. A good fraction of that came from grants, not revenue generated by the line itself. Those costs came from Wikipedia. The E&LS has 347 miles of track, not all as bad as the ND&W, but you can see that rehabilitating a line that has had deferred maintenance for many years is very costly.

In my 32 years of railroading, I saw my shares of derailments and the process of pulling them back on the rails was a nerve-racking white knuckle moment as an engineer when you had to work both the throttle and independent brake at the same time to keep a steady pull and be able to stop the second the track people said to. Glad I'm retired now!

My local shortline had a "Severe" derailment I witnessed in 2010. Lost over 12 grainers. They rebuilt the branch, much stronger welded rail. Had a smaller incident much later in 2023. Now, the whole line is under track maintenance. E&LS could learn a thing or 2 about healthy maintenance, derailments are more expensive than track work!

That was awesome Jason - as I said in the preview, it's so sad to see something so serious when regular track maintenance would probably make it less likely to happen, but given the weather conditions, the weight and length of the train it was sort of "waiting to happen". Although they go slow through Iron Mountain, just wondering if they were going just a bit to quick and not allowing the back end to come round that curve more slowly - we'll never know for sure

I do feel for the railroad. Everyone bashes them for not rebuilding all their tracks, but people don't understand that it's not financially feasible for them. That is financial suicide. Weed control alone on a line can break these small outfits. They do the best they can with what they got. I hate seeing them derail again, but I do enjoy seeing the process of fixing the problem. I hope they have smooth railing from here on out... at least until they climb out of this hole they're in.
@lynntremblay19844 күн бұрын
Thanks for doing this it is fascinating for me but those rails.
@Billblom4 күн бұрын
I think I saw a few spikes flying away from the track while attempting the re-rail during some of the snapping sounds... If so, there are *really* bad ties in the area. The rails should not bend far enough to pop them out if the ties and spikes are properly friendly. Loose spikes because of rotten ties are the recipe for a derail...Looks like some gauge bars would be a good thing as well.
@marykrauthamel75593 күн бұрын
I think the clicking noise was the spitting out of the spikes as the trucks ran over the tie plates!

To be completely honest im surprised they don't know this method. Because in Canada when our winter months come we see cold and what they do is they will rase the height of the tracks and in the spring they will lower the tracks so that way they stay level no the matter the difference in grade.
