For everyone saying Jack Jones was his stage name, no it wasn't a stage name. Jack & I grew up together & it was simply his name growing up. His mum remarried when they moved to Australia to a drummer named Trevor Jones. When he got older, he wanted to be more connected to his roots & his birth father, & more disconnected from his Southern Sons era & promoted himself as Irwin Thomas. In the last decade or so, he has accepted who he is & who is was, & has a huge fanbase from both eras, so really goes by both names now. Such an amazing talent!!

I think Jack Jones was his stage name. Then he started to be known by his legal name. Call him what you want the man can sing and play guitar. Watch him play Van Halen.

Jack Jones was in John Farnham's band during his Chain Reaction Tour if I remember correctly. He sounds very much like JF. Loved Jack back in the day.

This is at Carols By Candlelight, Melbourne’s Christmas Eve fundraiser for Vision Australia. I remember hearing this from the choir, and being carried away by his ethereal quality.

The ending resolution to major (called a tierce á Picardy by musicians) works perfectly with the positive affirmation of the song.

Jack Jones was his stage name and he was born in America then moved later to Australia 🇦🇺 You can definitely hear the John Farnham, he was a great inspiration for Irwin and also Micheal Paynter.

His dads name was Jack (who died very early on) and his mums surname is Jones. His mum would call him Jack for the connection to his dad. So for southern sons went with stage name Jack Jones. Real name Irwin Thomas Gotta check out his acoustic version of little wing. INSANE!!!!

Actually Jones wasn't a stage name. His step dad in Australia was a bass player by the name of Trevor Jones. He used his stepfather's surname for many years in Australia. It was his return to living in the US that got him back in touch with the origins of his identity.

Here’s a fun fact, Nick - I remembered that you said in an earlier video that you reacted to The D-Gen’s video ‘Five in a Row’ (which looks like it is available on Patreon only and not KZbin). Not only did Jack play guitar on that song, but he also provided the vocals for the ‘John Farnham’ part too.

I'm a big Southern Sons fan, ever since I saw the band open for John Farnham on a concert tour back in the early 90's, I think, but I've never heard that song. Not my favourite, but you're right - the vocals are amazing, as usual with him.

Oh great find Dominic...I hadn't seen this before....agree he is using the same phrasing as John when he sings...holds that note a little longer...such a beautiful performance. And his long hair is all gone..aw ...

Mate This track is so great. This live version from Sydney from memory was so special to watch. Irwin and Phil Buckle, Virgil,Reggie, Geoff are ALL at the top tier of musicians/songwriters etc. Great songs always stand the test of time and live performances like this do too. I'm happy that their was little kids in the audience sitting on the grass and listening/watching this performance and their hopefully was even just 1 or more kids in the crowd that felt how deep musically this was. Who knows they mightbe muso's etc now. That's the power of music. It's universal. That's what happened to me as a kid. Seeing brass bands and orchestra's etc and it lit a spark in me inside. And i thought "I wanna do that" I'm still drumming and also Woodworking as ya know. Great request 🔨🥁🦘🙏

Jack Jobes was his stage name because his real name wasn’t considered cool for a talent back then. Brilliant musician, singer. A super talent!

You're finding the best of Australian music here. Another of my favourites. He was always underestimated, even in Australia. He was kind of put aside with 'Oh, he sounds like John'. A valid, but unfair statement when it kind of brushes him aside with less regard than he deserves. Similar tone to John, much influenced by John's singing, but a very, very different, but very valid voice type. Those high notes are very well controlled - they are also FIENDISHLY difficult to sing and control. It's easier to belt like John, in my opinion.

I actually find his tone to have even more clarity and purity than John Farnham‘s, and there’s no shade to JOHN who is one of the best male vocals ever.

There’s a vulnerable quality to Jack/Irwin’s delivery more so than John’s. Love them both.

Wow. He is good. Natural talent then, touring with John, then leading a band has certainly honed his skills.

G'day Dom, this man has one of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard and deserve so much more recognition, but I also understand why he doesn't really want it... I think one of the reasons a lot of blokes grow face fur is to hide their beautiful baby faces... my eldest son is one of them...he's coming up for 40, if he goes bare faced, he gets carded every time... it kinda gets up his nose, he's a married man with 8 kids, his oldest being 18...

He is still great, I’ve seen him doing a Beatles show and he (& the others) were seriously excellent. Jack Jones is/was a stage name. From memory of a bio I read once I think he has an American dad and Australian mum, born in the US but came to Australia at around (I’ll guess) 10 or so.

Everyone has compared him to John Farnham. That's why Farnham hired him as backing and guitar. But I think his career may have been better if he didn't sound so much like Farnham
