This is exactly how I was both raised eating green beans and cooking them. Fabulous! You are so right, take what you like add more, what you don't like the don't put in - each recipe is unique and every house or family has a recipe, BUT true "Southern Style Green Beans" have to be made from fresh green beans! You can never, EVER achieve a "homemade taste or quality" from canned green beans no matter how you cook them or what you add - they will always look and taste like canned greened beans. These are worth the effort every time. Thanks so much for video - keep them coming....Got me a mess of beans cookin' on the stove right now! Leftovers are even better!

@Hedy8 жыл бұрын
Hello, I am so sorry to just now be replying to you. No problem, it is one of those NuWave Induction burner. I got it a few years back and one of mine died, so I bought another one. When I first got this one there were not a lot of other burners out on the market. There are now many to choose from.. I would maybe go on Amazon and type in "induction burner" that way you can see which ones are rated the best. I love mine, SO much easier when shooting videos for my channel, I can get it centered right under my rig so that you get a detailed shot. Great for extra burner during holidays, mother/teen suites, dorms etc. Thank you for watching! :D

I think that would be a great choice! Just slice or dice and brown the ham off, like I did with the bacon. Like you said just adjust for the saltiness. Do a final taste for salt towards the very end. I'd love to know how they came out! :D

Hey darlin' I am SO SORRY I am late to help you! I just had MAJOR surgery last week and I am flat down and cannot move around very good for a few more weeks and therefore I am VERY behind on comments. Depending on my stock pot I usually add 4-6 cups of water. Always remember you can also just add the Better than Bouillon (or Tones soup base is also pretty good) to your taste. I believe in this video I used 4 cups. of water. I am sure I was late and I apologize! Thank you honey for watching my video! I will be back soon with some great recipes and tidbits! :D

Do you not string the beans before you cut them or break them up?
@Hedy9 жыл бұрын
+Jimmy Lowery Hello Jimmy, I do when I find that there is a need for me to. When I am using fresher, more tender young green beans there has never been a problem. I have many times in the past of all my years making them. If I do find that it is necessary, I simply snap the end off and "de-string" them. LOL These green beans were so fresh and tender I did not need to do that this time.
@jimmylowery73879 жыл бұрын
Thanks I have always used what old timers call white half runners and they have to be strung unless they are picked way to early. Thanks for your response. I cooked them in the pressure cooker. I used 3 tablespoons of bacon grease, 2 smoked pork chops and cooked them for 30 minutes, My wife loved them she made a meal out of the beans and smoked chops. The one thing they needed was a pawn of cornbread.
@Hedy9 жыл бұрын
+Jimmy Lowery Hey Jimmy, I have strung PLENTY of white half runners in my life! They are worth it, and I find it relaxing to do a big ol' bowl of 'em! It reminds me of being with my Grandma when I was little. You are very welcome! PS Save me some of those beans and chops! I'll be right over! LOL

@grlblamb93056 жыл бұрын
Love watching your video. I make my beans similar. However, I generally use fatback, jowl, salt pork...something like that. I brown the salt pork/fatback first. Did you know Better Than Bouillon has a ham base one? It is the best! I use it in this recipe, in dry beans, etc. It's hard to find at the grocery store. They do have it at Amazon (for a fortune). Got mine at Publix. I've been using it for yearsl.
@Hedy6 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much! Yes fatback is good to use The. last time I made them, as I do sometimes, I baked a spiral sliced ham beforehand (did not use the spice pack) then I let it cool down. I cut the meat off it, leaving some towards the bone. Then that bone went right in with the green beans. Mmmmm good, plus the bonus of having ham on the side! Yes I have used the BTB ham base as well. I have used it sometimes in my Senate Bean Soup if I have it.. But on my videos, I do try to keep things as simple as possible using most things hopefully the folks can get at their grocery store, because you are correct it is really hard to find.. Thank you so much for watching! :D

Hedy, can these be frozen after they've been cooked?
@Hedy9 жыл бұрын
+Lydia Sheppard Hey Lydia! Well some claim you can and some say no way! Believe it or not, I have never attempted it! Of all of the 100's of pots of green beans I have made in my life, I have yet to freeze them ever. Only because there are never any left to freeze! My family loves leftovers, so they are always eaten up within a couple of days. So now thanks to you asking me, I am going to try to freeze some of them next time I make some, so I will know from my own experience if they are as good as they were before they were frozen. I know this did not answer your question for now, but I can't give my honest opinion until I have tested it myself. Now, if you are wanting to know now, do what I am going to do next time I make some, I would perhaps make a half recipe, let them cool down and then do the following, divide your cooked batch into 2 or even better, 3 smaller batches. Put all of them into the freezer safe container of your choice (I just use freezer bags). Now label each one with the date that you are placing them in or mark your calendar as to the exact date that you froze them. Next, I would take one out in about 3 days and reheat to see if they held up to you personal standards, if they did, then I would proceed ahead and leave the others in for whatever period of time you are wanting to test for, leaving them in for examples sake, about a month and then 2 months, again seeing if you feel they held up each time. This is what I am going to do as well. :-D I am so sorry I could give you a definite yes or no answer. Perhaps some other viewer can throw in their two cents worth, thereby enlightening us both!

I use chicken broth as shown in the video, not water. I listed it down in the recipe. Enough broth to just cover the beans with a little extra in reserve. Water will affect the flavor somewhat, still tasty but not as flavorful as broth.

Did I miss something, when did you use apple vinegar?
@Hedy9 жыл бұрын
bepos1luv ok Hello, honey that was listed as an optional ingredient, I know folks who do use a little, though I do not care for it in my green beans. But some folks do add it, which is why I listed it as an optional add. If you are not used to making your green beans yet, I strongly recommend NOT using it until you are used to making them. Again I personally do not use vinegar in my green beans. Now at times I have used a little in my turnips greens, but that is a video for another time! LOL! Thank you honey for watching, I hope you will make these (minus the vinegar LOL) you will LOVE them! At times I have to double or triple my recipe for family gatherings as those green beans are always eaten with none left! LOL :D
