I am in Jacksonville FL. Recently saw a bunch of tadpoles in my fountain. It’s three feet off the ground and I was surprised. I started feeding them cooked broccoli. They preferred that over cucumbers or spinach. Anyway, I am down to one tadpole but last night I heard so much croaking! I have never had much frog or toad activity as I’m in a residential urban area. I am pretty sure it’s southern roads and hope to find them in a few days when they are bigger so I can tell. But it’s been quite the excitement in my fountain and yard!

I was successful in a breeding this year I found a few tricks over last year.mine was American Toads though not Southern. 1. Mine came out of hibernation and I fed them as much as they wanted. 2. I got a tank ready with water and let it sit for a week to acclimate. In this tank I put a hide rock, some terrarium wood, and a cok half round with a vine of pathos in the water, a little floating reindeer moss just to give some stuff to make it feel comfy but didn't overdo it. 3. He started calling and I noticed last year her back stripe turned a bright white, when it did that this year, i put them in the water tank. 4. Literally within 24 hours I had a tank full of fertilized eggs. Whole process was about 2 weeks probably not even that really from when the first one woke up weekend before last week of January. So they come out hungry and ready to get it on.

Break out the fancy crackers and champagne Benjamin is making homemade frog caviar! Just kidding congratulations man that's probably really exciting for you. I remember finding strings of eggs in the creeks and rivers by my house when I was a kid, I would always go back and catch Bullfrog tadpoles, raise them up in a 20 gallon tank in my bedroom then release them bak where I first collected them when they became frogs. It's a really cool thing to watch the transformation from tadpole to adult frog, specially when they get their legs and still have a tail that was always my favorite stage of frog development.
@BenjaminsExotics2 жыл бұрын
@eddie julian, Lol! Frog spawn does look just like caviar a lot of times. Yes I used to raise Bullfrogs and other local tadpoles years ago as well just for fun. It probably influenced my interest in breeding and working with the frog species I do now.

How do I get my toads to mate and breed like you did?
@BenjaminsExotics Жыл бұрын
@baby7543, Unfortunately most true toads are very hard to breed, especially if they are wild caught.

Was actually considering this project my self, i have TONS of the southerns on my property in east tx as well as americans and also the leapord frogs and grey tree frogs but toads interest me , the colors do vary here as well its fun to go toad catching and see the various types every night i could find a bunch but winters here , most are the reddish orange here but def vary, anyways enjoyed the video
@BenjaminsExotics2 жыл бұрын
@TYLER TX WILL, Texas has a really wide variety of Toads, but Southerns only range to the east side of Louisiana. Could be American Toads or Fowler's, would really depend on the location since Texas has 10 different species. They're really fun to work with but definitely a challenge to breed. Hopefully I'll be producing some CBB Eastern Gray Tree Frogs this upcoming year, which are another really amazing species that are rarely bred in captivity.
