In all actuality, knowing Bonds and his reputation, I wouldn't be surprised if some people got a few incentives to come march yesterday. Nice battle sound wise, but versatility and technicality, the Juke originated the power and intensity most bands attempt to beat them at. It's the way their music is written. You never saw Danielson try to fight Mr. Miyagi. TC is ok, don't get me wrong, but all the hype may be only for a few years, if you know Miguel.

Don't lie, for Haymer to call out his technical song you know that damn 'Happy' was jamming. And honestly SU took a L stop being biased for a second and watch the whole battle. Talladega never lost intensity, they stayed the same from the first note of the battle and SU on the other hand especially trumpets stopped playing. Since when has the world famed 'Screaming Demons' stopped taking it up. I can argue with you all day but yeah SU has better arrangements but as for playing the whole battle Talladega won. Makes me wish they played 'Liberian Girl'

My opinion on this round is SU sounded way,more,polished but. TC sounded good as well and i actually give it to TC for having better song selections...its a parade with mostly kids in their teens and 20s attending...i think thats how TC got a better reaction frm the crowd playing pop tunes...i feel like only bandheads and old souls could really appreciate su's song selections..just my opinion tho

That was not SU full band. Talladega has a lot more brass which allow them to me much louder not powerful. There a lot of ex-Human Juke's and JState members in Talladega's band (I know a lot of them). They did a pretty good, but let's not get it twisted. Do not get technical mixed up with ignorance loudness. Listen how clean SU sound is and Talladega's being loud to make people believe that they are the better band here. I listen to it all.

TC sounds like Sarah Towles Reed high school early 2000s when Bonds was there. Heard these cats 3 days while I was down there and they are loud, but they sound like a glorified high school band even on "Happy"

I’d like to point out that I’m impressed in Talladega’s performance for being such a young program. But I can’t do that without acknowledging that while their program is young, the people in the band aren’t new to they style of what they’re obviously trying to achieve. Several members in their band are old Jukebox members that didn’t return due to low academics. I also see people who did not make the Jukebox (year after year, 6’9 on cymbals in example) marching with Talladega. I can’t say I’m too impressed with Talladega’s over all identity. They want to be SU and JSU on so many levels. Just looking back at their field shows, dancers, and overall band, its evident that Miguel wants to produce a replica of the Jukebox, like Louisiana Leadership Institute All-Star Marching Band. Please correct me if I’m wrong. The instrumentation on the field in there designated areas to accomplish SU concert formation and drill pattern. They Dega Diamonds wear gloves, character glittered heels, glittered jazz boots and they replicated several uniforms. The gold sequin from Bayou Classic 2013 is the most recent they copied in silver sequin. I’m saying this to say while you’re making yourself relevant, it’ll only go so far not having your own identity.

I feel you, but at the end of the day, people just want to see a show. If the music is powerful and loud and has rhythm, that's all people want. And so far. Talledega has stepped up to the plate with SU compared to all the other bands, even the SWAC conference. Its almost like a Cinderella story or an under dog story. That is what "America" is all about and why a lot of people like Talledega

This battle is like a band heads wet dream.lol 1st I want to give credit to TC, I am very impressed with them. To say that they're program is so young they are doing great things. But at some point you have to be honest with yourself, they didn't come close to getting the W. They held there own tho, and that's more than a lot of other bands can say.

Good Job TC but you have a long way to go in the chess game that is a band battle.Its a mental thing. Who can play with the most power while being the most musical. I Remember is one of the most powerfully musical songs in the band world, and Beyond.........Who else is pushing those kind of WATTS while playing in tune collectively, while beasting over a true grade 5-6 collegiate level piece of music. Southern is giving a you nice satirical ass whooping. Its not about how "loud" you are but how well you execute your music at the level you choose. Arrangements(music), musicality(execution), and the effect (volume, intensity) is what I was taught grants you a win over another band. I truly hope you continue to grow as a program because your are so young you are hungry and that will give the "big dogs" of our order a reason to cease being complacent, that being said, you all have great potential but this victory is easily the "S".

I understand your opinion but at the same time, SU play these pop things such as "And Then What" "Holy Grail" and are looked at as the "GOD" of the band world. The same university that continue to say they've blown FAMU out the water each time whom only went up against them playing pop tunes while FAMU consistently played more in tune with a more technical repertoire of music sounds a bit of a double standard than an objectionable view to me. A battle is a battle and besides it was a parade battle so I would except a band to play songs for the crowd. I would have expected Talladega or any other university to show off their musicianship and versatility but it is a parade battle. As long as I've been in band, I have never heard a band play a concert piece in the midst of a parade battle besides warming up to one. I can honestly say that Talladega definitely served Southern. Talladega had a much more power than Southern. Southern band sounding very thin than normal and their trumpets are playing all over the status field with no direction, Tuba's were playing out of the norm and the Baritones were definitely not as strong as normal. I honestly think SU took the term underestimation to the head and got caught slipping. This is my opinion in regards to yours.

Alex Lee Small discrepancies with your argument sir.First and foremost know what you are talking about first and secondly how to articulate it. And Then What and Holy Grail are not now nor will they ever be Pop Tunes. Those are Rap Tunes, yes there are differences. No the song themselves are not looked at as the "God" of the band world, but the level of difficulty in the arrangements added to the power displayed by the execution of that arrangement is what makes a lot of people like them. It is not the same thing as saying the song itself is the reason for it being liked. Talladega could have played that half ass arrangement of I Got 5 On It at J-State and it would have been the same result. They were defeated musically. Now as far as FAMU is concerned the problem here is that your argument negates itself. They are suspect #1 when it comes to playing concert material in a battle setting and prevailing with said material. The reason people say that bands like Southern & Jackson edge out bands like FAMU is because of the difficulty of what is being played and how well it is being played. I love Sarg but his style arrangements are very easy to play, I played them at my high school and a lot of those children could not read music but could learn the fingerings and know the basic song structure to get by, playing nothing but FAMU arrangements. Regardless if this is a parade battle, gym brawl, 5th quarter or what have you a band will play what it will. How well they play it is the determining factor and how difficult it was to play. Period. Now again this is my humble opinion but in no way did I say that Talladega is a bad band, they just need to mature the type of arrangements they bring to the field to be a true contender. Look at it like this. Grambling has good years, but it's the consistency that keeps them from being looked at the way they were in the 80s and 90s. Talladega's arrangements were very inconsistent, Happy was miles above the level they executed Holy Grail, and then you have Careless Whisper.......That's all that needs to be said. But Southern played things like Beyond, which went unanswered, I Remember which was unanswered as well and that is just in this video alone. They did not return a comparable song that was better than what Southern Played. IE they took the L.
