Great review! There are a couple of things mentioned that I'd like to provide some insight in to after using the 2019 Outback for some time. The seat bottom frame is the same size in length, the big difference is the front end of the older Outback seat mesh is straight and the front end of the new Outback seat mesh is cut out in the shape of a half moon. This was done as an improvement to allow for more clearance to the underside of the thigh, so when a pedal stroke is made there is less chance of someones thigh contacting with the seat bottom mesh. This is great for people with larger thighs and will not affect support and comfort of the seat. The rear end of the kayak and the way the rudder and keel come together was one of those unavoidable things. If the stern of the kayak were shaped like a Pro Angler, it would be a completely different boat. The front end would require a lot more buoyancy, the boat would be significantly heavier, and you'd lose a lot of the tracking and glide. The Outback loader is a solution to allow the boat to be loaded like a PA, but function well as a "kayak". It has pros and cons, but with a few different techniques for loading and portaging we found this design to be a lot more beneficial. The rudder will hang up on a tail gate and dig in to soft sand when dragging, so I load my kayak into the bed of the truck nose first using the loader and drag is stern first using the larger rear handle. This eliminates any contact of the rudder with the tailgate or the ground. Hope this helps to provide a couple of solutions to those points. This was a fantastic review and I look forward to seeing your review of the 2019 Outback on the water.

Yep, good comparison for sure! I had to decide that getting some water over the bow was better than having my nose up against the wind when paddling super shallow. I don't generally do very large waves. Tested it out with boat wakes - definitely wetter, but not bad.

Great video! Thanks. I'm ready to buy the 2020 Outback, but a buddy of mine swears the 2017 Outback is better because of the hull design. We only fish in the ocean, sometimes in not ideal conditions. I heard water dumps into the 2019 and 2020 models pretty severely? What's been your experience on lake water chop? Thanks

Thanks for the detailed review. I have visited my Hobie dealer at least 6 times in the last month to stare the 2019 Outback down, procrastinating what to do, everything is saying go....EXCEPT the WET water ride! I sold my brand new 2017 Camo Outback after 3 weeks because it was a wetter ride than my Vibe SG130 and cramped legroom when taking your feet off the pedals. I can't see giving up my Predator PDL which cuts through the waves (2-3 footers)-NOT chop and keeps me so dry as compared to what I have seen and heard for the 2019 Outback. Final decision - wait another year or so, perhaps they will come out with a newly designed PA 12 that fits right in! Thanks again!

Thanks for the side by side look at both Outbacks. I have a 2018 Outback and now that I have seen the differences I don't feel any great need to change. I fish in similar conditions as you although not in quite so open waters. I believe you are correct in your assessment that there will be design changes before long.

Agreed. Upon seeing this new one I put my 2018 up for sale. May have to take it down after seeing this informative review. While space is superb and there is improved stability, tracking and speed, it will be more of a challenge launching and landing in the surf, and moving in a minimum of 2 ft seas. That said, this 2019 s/b great for fishing the s/w flats, ponds, and lakes. Still tempting!

Awesome review! I think for me the upgraded cockpit agree is all about standing, and storage. I do like the longer nose because that equals a bigger fish bag. My only thought about the rudder design is maybe its to decrease the turning radius? I dont own a PA, but I do own the 19 so I cant compare. Does the PA turn on a dime like the 19? I’m definitely going to make a wave breaker for mine.

Thanks for the nice comment, and the Outback isn't for everyone. The PA is nice and more of a freshwater yak in my opinion. Somewhere where you would be standing a lot.
@smokeydabeecharlescoleman83656 жыл бұрын
Just a thought. Would it be possible to place a bow guard / shield on the nose. That would deflect water down, and lift the nose in a chop. Making for a better, and dryer ride.As far as the rudder goes, they can just allow for a greater recess in the molding.
@SouthernReelsFishing6 жыл бұрын
Good points! I added hull protection around the perimeter of my Outback, which consist of water hose and duct tape. And the hose protruding on the nose of the kayak seems like it would add some defense against water so easily washing over the nose. I am already thinking about adding another small 1 inch high deflector to the top of the nose of the yak running a foot or so back on each side to redirect any water that gets over off to the side...
@smokeydabeecharlescoleman83656 жыл бұрын
I was thinking more like a light weight Shield. Something that reaches out over the bow and is elevated. Picture a manta ray wing mounted behind the nose, but elevated to catch and or divide water. If it seals to the deck it would stop water flow, and keep the nose from diving.Almost a hood scoop if you will, but with open sides as to not drive the craft backwards.

Havent notice the shorter cockpit, but the pedals do sit a tad higher in relation to the seat on the new outback. Wetter ride not an issue for me.

Excellent and straight up review. I agree with your assessment on the rudder. That is not a good design and the Compass has a similar malady but I do think Hobie will address the issue in the future without admitting that this design was an "Oh S**t" moment.

Awesome review. I just ordered mine and was wondering how you like the boonedox on your 17 outback and if you are doing the same on the 19. I’ve had boonedox on all of my kayaks and had to use larger backing plates on the coosa fd’s to avoid flex. How good are the backing plates/position on the outback as far as flex in the plastic goes. I’ve never owned a Hobie only peddled them. Thanks, love the videos.
@SouthernReelsFishing6 жыл бұрын
I love it and yes I already have it sitting waiting to be installed. I'm planning to do an install video of it next week. No issues with flex on the PA or the Outback, the hulls are very thick where the system mounts.

I weighed the idea of buying a 2020 or 2017 and I couldn’t justify the price difference. I purchased a lightly used 2017 Outback with a Lowrance, upgraded cart, paddle, leash and all the upgraded hatch liners for about $1400.00 less than a new unit. I has the 180 drive with reverse. I checked the hull and with the exception-of a very few scratches from beaching it, it’s nearly perfect. The gentleman I purchased it from built a custom wall rack with foam deck to store it. Since I don’t fish, I think this turned out to be a good decision and this video helped me make my decision. Is there any chance you might make a video on seasonal drive maintenance?
@SouthernReelsFishing5 жыл бұрын
I haven't thought of that, its a good idea
@timrussell895 жыл бұрын
Nice review, if someone was interested in purchasing a fishing kayak how would you say the pedal drive system performs when fishing around bridge pilings and stuff? I understand it has cables to switch forward and reverse. Didn't know if that might be a pain when compared to the pedal drives that operate like a bicycle where you just pedal back and forth. I don't currently have a kayak, just doing my research on them. Also just curious if you prefer the outback over the pro angler and why? Sorry for the questions just wondering the opinion of someone who has experience with these things.
@SouthernReelsFishing5 жыл бұрын
The CBBT Piling fishing is the only time I think the Prop drive might outperform the Hobie Drives. Shifting is a pain and instant reverse and braking would make it easier to stay in position. But it is still possible with the Hobie Drives. Other than that I can't think of any other time that the Prop drives are better. I like the Outback because of the reduced weight and handling abilities. Makes a world of difference when there isn't a boat ramp to launch with.

Really great comparisons, sizes & measurements - always gets my attention since I’m in a Hobie Sport ;-) (which I love). I’m not sure about your OS moment surmise though, and I also doubt Hobie will be redesigning the Outback anytime soon, as in years. I wish to heck they would have renamed it though, its not really an Outback in any classic sense anymore. Outback GT or something... Outback 13... anyway that’s my personal issue... but they COULD keep both HOBIE if you’re LISTENING. Eg; 2020 Outback Classic... I digress; I think the new Outback is seriously cool but its going to excel in fresh water, including big fresh water and pretty shallow water, tournament angler boat. The classic is going to excel in rivers creeks and salt, especially surf from what I’m seeing.

I have actually only upgraded once, from the PA 14 to the new outback. The blue Outback it actually my wifes. I only fished out of it early this summer because my PA was down for repair. I realized I really liked the Outback, more so than the PA. So I decided to sell my PA and get a new 2019 Outback. They will last for 10 years yes, if you take care of them. Cables will have to be replaced and scratches and dents filled over time. Other than that sure it will last. I totally disagree with your opinion on the way the 2019 Outback rides in the water. The new Outback cuts through the chop and yes the water can and does come over the top of the kayak but it drains into the Mirage Drive Well, not a wetter ride at all. There is no hull slap at all on the new Outback, which is a huge improvement. As far as the rudder goes, its the same or very similar to the rudder on the Hobie Compass. I did buy a Compass when they first came on the market and I can tell you the rudder in the stowed position did hit the ground when loading. Hobie did not want this issue with the new Outback. The loading cassette is not an after thought, its a well thought out method to solve the issue of the stowed rudder hitting the ground when being loaded onto the vehicle. The loading cassette is brilliant and has made loading the 2019 Outback incredibly easy. I have owned all models of the Hobie Fishing Kayaks except the Sport and the Adventurer, this includes the two sizes in the Pro Anglers, my opinion is that the 2019 Outback is by far the easiest Hobie to transport on roof racks than any other model they have ever produced. Furthermore the 2019 Outback has ticked the boxes, Hobie have made the Outback great again and they are going to sell plenty with this new design. I can't wait to get out for another fish in it, its just brilliance on water!
@SouthernReelsFishing6 жыл бұрын
At this point on some level I have to agree with you. When I made this video I hadn't even had the new Outback in the water yet personally. Since then I have logged 15 trips out in it in various water conditions. I do have to say that compared to the older Outbacks it definitely takes more water over the bow than the previous models did. But I don't see this as a real problem because as you stated it just all flow right out the pedal drive hole very quickly. Now it does seem that for some reason some of the Outbacks released had an issue with water getting into the hull through the front hatch, an issue I have not had. Maybe it was user error or something, I'm not sure but I have had mine out in rough water several times with no issues. But you definitely take more water on your feet and into the outer hull than before, and that's what I meant by the wetter ride. The loading adapter is junk in my opinion, and quickly remedied by adding Boonedox landing gear, emphasis on "My Opinion". Anyway I love my new Outback and it will definitely be my go to fishing machine as far as kayaks go for the foreseeable future...
