I think it's just the difference between production intent. ETCG has made it clear many times over he's not a live shop, it's a studio doing cars stuff. SMA is clearly different in that regard and reminds me a bit of the really old ETCG videos. Everyone matures into their own thing. With that said SMA videos are awesome and I would love watching a Doug channel on the heavy stuff. The commentary with Eric O is great too. In the meantime check out the channel of Stephen Cox, has some pretty neat heavy equipment mechanic videos.

Same here. I used to be a huge ETCG fan but since I found this channel with Eric O., it's like watching amateur hour car repair on ETCG's channel. I do like him and appreciate what he started but Eric O. is a TRUE mechanic who can diagnose and repair a vehicle properly. His commentary is great as well.

Fun fact: the term Rack comes from old Detroit engines that actually had a rack that controlled the injectors. Today you would call it overhead adjustment

Spent my 43 years as a heavy duty truck mechanic. Made great money never ever work not one! Had great employers. Some of them Union some of them not. Never a dealer! All were good Union was better. Four of them were independent shops last one was a fleet shop for 10 years. That one was the best! Chased us around with a money tree. Never worked under flat rate. Lots of road service calls which I enjoyed. Of course, living in Sunny California those were pretty enjoyable. So was the money!

Thanks a million guys for this vid: as a retired truck/fire truck mechanic it took me back to the job I just LOVED to do. Never regretted a minute of it, even tho it was hard and dirty and often cold out in the open, especially when doing vehicle recovery. Never made much money at it either, but money's not everything.

The car has 34,000 US Miles / 55,000 kilometers on it and i was just wondering should i be changing those plugs based on time? Or mileage? Seems to get spot on 26mpg city as it is supposed to.

thanks mister O! I drive a class A for a USPS Contractor in the winter, and I never knew how they adjusted valves. in fact- one of the videos you mentioned you couldnt get parts because of a severe snow storm in Philadelphia. The reason you didnt get your parts was *ME* ... I ran the contract route from philly to rochester/buffalo at that time (All of your packages and first class from this area get sorted through rochester), And I turned around that day in the storm and didn't make another attempt for 2 more days... So- it's a small world.

I’m currently home back in United States on my military drill weekend, and of course before I go to sleep after a long duty day out on the shooting range... This is my go to. It was a great episode as well watching the big rigs engines get worked on. Thanks Eric. And Who knows, maybe a KZbin channel will develop out of this for Sonny’s garage. HOOAH 😎👍🏼🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

I drove in 97 a very high HP Cummins powered truck. Boss had overhauled it to over 800 HP to the ground. When you can stand on the power in the high side of the transmission and you almost pick up the Right Front tire off the ground you have a beast. That truck has over 2 Million miles on her and over 1 million of them at the current settings. That old girl would out pull any engine that was painted Yellow.

Brings back memories when I first did a in frame rebuild on a 98 Volvo with a 60 series Detroit with close to 1 million on the clock. Truck was falling apart and the owner was a cheapskate. I had to run 12 gallons of coolant through a paint filter Because he wouldnt get new stuff. The engine was a top when we got done. Also replaced 8 drive tires. Rest of it was clapped but it ran great.

"Did you pull the coil wire so it doesn't accidentally start?" Funny stuff! I ran my Cummins powered 06 Classic XL to 990k. Then left it @ Pittsburgh Power while the wife and I took 2 months vacation. While there, it got an out of frame and an uprate from 600 to 800hp. They dynoed it first and it was still in excellent condition, very little blow by etc. That's what good maintenance does. The trans, rears and front end were also gone through at the time. I basically got a brand new tractor for 1/2 the cost as well as time with the wife and family. Win/win situation!

Nice. I'm always interested in how things work. My father drove truck and rebuilt one engine but I was in the Army at the time. Its kind of amazing how such little things like your phone ringing will cause people to stop watching. Its like you are some production company and ma only able to do videos not realizing you have to make a living. I don't know what you make off you tube and don't care. Your experience and expertise you share in your videos are priceless to me. Maybe you should ask the one's to leave to share their videos to show you how easy a video is to make. Bet 99.9% don't. And as far as torqueing things, I know at least for me, overtime you just develop a 'feel' for things, like when I was a jeweler and could just shape bracelets and necklaces without even thinking about it. You do something a few thousand times and it tends to stick with you. Not sure about those 'duck' boats though, saw where some people died in one. Thanks for sharing.

I wonder what your brother was thinking when you said,”if we can do it, you can do it”. I got a small taste of what it was like working on a large diesel up in Anchorage Alaska. Got to help a guy replace sleeves and pistons in a diesel bus. Must have been a 2 stroke diesel. There were holes around the center of the sleeves. I remember a few of them coming out in two pieces. Dirty job and if you ask me I think it takes a special kinda guy to work on them heavy diesels. Enjoyed seeing how the valves, injector and jake brake adjustment are done.

DO IT DOUG! DOOOO IT!! :D I laughed at the coil comment there LOL! "You just disconnected the coil, right?" , "Yeah". HAHAHA! Some newbie engine folks may not have picked up on that one. :) This was great! First time I've seen inside one of those. I hear from my buddy who's been driving for years about in-frame rebuilds, and the removable sleeves, etc., but was nice to actually see it. Love those diesel pistons - I have a set of 6 out in front of my barn here. Came out of one of the trash trucks I used to drive years ago. Weigh about 10 lbs each! Not quite 5", so a bit smaller engine, but still huge by my standards. I've done more motorcycle and OPE engines than car engines over the years. Tiny little 1" pistons in some - some even smaller! Heavy truck valves are bigger than the whole piston/con-rod/crank assembly combined, lol. I would definitely love to see some big diesel carnage! Never seen one blow up before. I had an old P&H excavator here with a 2-stroke Detroit in it - I let my neighbor store it here while in the process of moving. Would take a shot of ether to get it started, but once running, it ran great - never been rebuilt. Thing used just as much oil as diesel, lol. Surprised it didn't run away on us. Runaways make excellent KZbin vids, HAHAHA! I think we created a brownfields site here between the leaking engine and hydraulic oil, LOL. What a BEAUTIFUL sound out of those old 2-strokes though! Nothing better.

I know) and slave cylinder for transmission. Paid $34000, three years or 350K miles warranty. So for me watching you guys work on one of these things is just like watching Porn Hub. Please keep those videos comming.

Would love to see more of this. It's nice seeing mechanics doing things right (there's nothing wrong with German torquing most parts).

How insane is the big heavy duty stuff ... beatiful and on those you are not worried about the milleage, you can just put endless miles on them between repairs.

Did my apprenticeship with Cummins sales and service back in 76. It later became Cummins West. All those guys I worked with have passed away. They would be shocked to see what time has done to the old 855 NT engines. I got out of trucks as wages were not that great and have basically planed out. I’m in the car racket now. If I could take the best of trucks and cars. Combine them. That would be sweet. I’m close to ending the work years. Did I say I love red? Yes I do. I hated that Cummins beige

Great stuff Eric. Thankyou Doug for letting us in the shop. I'd love to see some more big diesel engine work. If you ever found the time i'd love to see more of the process involved in a rebuild. You could probably have a great channel if you started KZbin.

Only thing that grinds my gears on the Cummins are the feet that contact the valve bridge. Total pain trying to slip a feeler gauge in there when they are covered in 15w40. Great vid though, makes me glad that the QSL9 and C7, 3126 that I deal with on gensets are HEUI and dont have Jakes. They just fire up and head for 1800rpm as quick as they can. Overhead sets get done every 3000 hrs on them, and usually we are surprised if the green ones make it to 16000 before they puke a crankshaft. Now that is some carnage.....90% engine load and 1800rpm, then blammo.
