These diagnostic videos where Eric O has a customer complaint that he needs to play detective to find the faulty component, shorted wire or other electrical gremlins are always my favorite to watch. Why? Because this is where THE TRUE TALENT of a great mechanic lies! So many times I seem to be that guy that gets these intermittent shorts or problems that nobody wants to or has the ability to find. I get stuck living with the problem because I don't have anyone nearly close to Eric O's talent to solve my mystery problem in my area. I found this channel because of videos like these and I stayed/subscribed because he follows proper diagnostic procedures to find the problem the first time. He even worried about the soda can in the customers car with Mrs. O. Lol. Nobody is better, nobody!

Had an elderly lady with a Caddy what "wouldn't start if she parked it in the driveway but was fine if she parked it in the road". After checking for parasitic drains, etc several times, I took the tow truck to her house. When I saw the setup, I knew what was going on. Her driveway was going down into a basement garage at a steep angle. The road was level. Deck lid had a mercury switch. The driveway angle was enough to make the switch turn on the light under the deck lid and run down the battery. I put a toggle switch into the circuit and everyone was happy......

I had three parasitic draws over the years I fixed. Luckily older cars. Yanked the battery cable and put a test light between the cable and post and pulled individual fuses till the light went out. The first was the radio in mid 90s ford car. A ford explorer the security system a relay in the back right pillar that turned on the side mirror bottom lamps. Last one was easy. A do it to yourself amp and radio with a wire that ran straight to the radio from the battery(obvious one)

Had the same issue on my 2002 Odyssey. It was the actual latch that springs out the fuel fill door. It has a cable internally that activates a switch. The plastic housing broke on the latch inside the frame of the car and was making the switch close as if the door was open, causing the 250 milliamp parasitic draw (activating the door lock relay). The door would remain locked, and even lock itself if I unlocked the car doors. Had to pull all of the paneling off of the left side which was the most difficult part. Replaced the cable switch and the parasitic draw went away (doors operated normally). GREAT video. BTW - if pulling panels, I recommend buying the plastic clips (for replacing the panels) ahead of time since it is likely you will break some in the removal process.

I agree with checking and verifying the readings with a couple different tools/meters before proceeding. I got burned yrs ago by a Fluke 83 that had a crappy lead. I found an ASD relay that was stuck on, but my Fluke still showed 750+mA down from 3 amps.. I chased that SOB for hrs! For the heck of it, another tech lent me his 98, and low and behold, the meter showed .0025mA with the relay pulled. I fixed it, but didn't know it!
@adamtrombino106
@adamtrombino106 6 жыл бұрын
Point is/was, make sure your leads are good by zeroing them out on the ohms scale before going after any kind of amp draw. I assumed my meter was correct, and it cost me a bunch of wasted time!

Had a 2000 Olds Intrigue. Whenever it sat idle for a couple of days, the battery died. Mechanics were perfectly willing to replace the battery, but none of them ever bothered to perform a parasitic draw test. One day, a wisp of smoke floated from under the hood. There was a small flame on top of the alternator. The rectifiers had shorted and were draining the battery through the alternator's windings, which heated so much that the windings' insulation melted and caught fire.

You have done this multiple times and I have watched them all. My '03 Avalanche developed a parasitic loss and caused me to use your methods. I never traced to the exact circuit, but eliminated so many possibilities I decided to replace the gang window, door lock, mirror switch on the driver's door. The switch has gradually lost function over three years ( it isn't a daily driver). I unplugged the switch while I waited for the new one to come in. Checked the battery after three or four days and it was fine. New switch allows me to adjust mirrors and roll down windows. Life is good!

Hey Eric, regarding amp clamps, the AC mode is inductive, but the DC mode uses Hall effect, it is very sensitive to magnetic fields, even the Earths (planet earth) which is why on low current range you need to zero / null out the meter before reading. Good interesting video, thanks..

Eric O says like back in the old days when you used to have to think. I'm twice his age and remember those days so well. That phrase can be used to criticize the modern age where technology is depended upon to make sure we are safe. There are times as Eric described in this video where things can converge so this can be a life saver. However today I read that Tesla released a software update that allows their cars to start and travel up to 200 feet to their owners using a smartphone. The newspaper I read this on said as an example for someone to have their car pick them up at the front of Costco. This is the wrong use of this technology. It shouldn't be used to enable our laziness. Great job Eric.

I know this sounds stupid, but you'd think that a fuse holder with a little momentary switch and long leads would be helpful when trying to find a mechanical relay. Matter of fact, I think I'm going to go make one now - provided I can find a scrap momentary switch.

The very first thing you do before pulling any fuse or measurement is look for aftermarket accessories. Nine times out of ten even when wired by someone who has a clue it will be the accessory either wired wrong or just doing what it’s supposed to do. Even things that just plug into a cigarette lighter socket or the data port can draw power if the circuit doesn’t switch off. I fitted a reverse camera and unfortunately picked the wrong one of four identical power wires after finding the right one the wrong one jumped in its place as I was fishing between panels and trying to get both hands in to a place a child would have trouble getting one into. Being a low power draw it would take a week or more to kill the battery but it kept burning out cameras.

Hi Eric just a couple of remarks, if its that much current it might be worth changing it to watts, i think its about 3 watts so it could be a bulb like the one in the trunk staying on, and with the fuses if you check which ones are live first you only have to remove those, as the dead ones shouldn't draw current, just an observation but you are doing great, from Fred in Essex UK.

Great help. I had I think similar story with Honda Odyssey 2004. Followed up shown procedure: same fuse 54 and then fuse 12 (inside). Only I didn't bother to remove relay instead I analyzed what would be most vulnerable component in mentioned circuit and decided to check sensor on fuel filler cap. Bingo! it had bad contact - after hitting button multiple time issue is gone. Now I know how to check if sensor failed after fueling - if I can not open driver side sliding door from my dash - I got to go and train that button.

If the draw is slow, one option would install a battery tender and plug it in when parked. A battery cut off switch when no outlet available. I mounted a switch inside the front right wheel well on my 06 corvette for periodic storage and theft protection, worked perfectly. Some draw problems aren’t worth the cost of diagnosis.

Went for one month then dived in with scope on a rope, amp clamp on battery and diagrams from alldata to tell me what circuit was killing battery. Found main fuse in under hood for heated accessories, like side mirrors, rear defog, and the seat heaters. Went and pulled fuses in the passenger fuse panel and draw would disappear for the rear and side mirrors. Pulled relay and power draw was still there. Determined fuse box was bad, replaced and no more phantom power draw. 2009 Buick Lacrosse that had two deer one on either side of the car. There are more things with this car that I have to fix, like random knock sensor grounding, modules disappearing from system then come back, and my favorite, the headlight driver wire from BCM to under hood fuse box broken.

I heard rumors that car makers were looking at offering back to basics cars. All the safety but none of the other BS. I for one cannot deal with all the crap while driving. Just gimme a wheel, a stick and a set of pedals and I'm fine.

Before tearing apart the interior to replace it, verify that the fuel door switch is being depressed by the fuel door. Honda uses mechanical switches that are very reliable, but the fuel doors themselves are not (so they are easy to replace). The part that pushes against the door open switch plunger is likely to be plastic or rubber and worn or fallen off.

It shounds like the best solution would be to replace the fuel door switch. I know the decission would be left up to the customer but becacuse it is a safety issue it would be in your best interest to recommend they allow you to replace it. Its all about libility and you could could become liable if you bypassed the safety devise and it was just your word against theirs. Document, document. Im no specialist as im only a plumber and gas fitter but i have heard enough where a furnace repairman bypassed safety devices and ended up in court. Always remember safety first. Yours and your customers. Great video by the way.

Why doesn't pulling the fuses on newer vehicles work for tracking down current draw?

Because you risk the chance of "waking up" a module that is timed out and forcing you to start back from the beginning and in some cases that is a 1 hour wait!!
