Come along with Eric O. at the SMA shop as he rolls through the day and replaces the front disk brake pads and rotors on a 2013 Fords Escape Titanium. Now this is a pretty simple job to do but it would be best before you handle this yourself to make sure you have the proper tools, equipment and manual. As always be safe!

Eric, this time last year I had to change my rotors and pads in the from of my Escape. I went with Brembo because that is what they sold at the place my son worked at. I got a super deal on them, or at least I thought. Over the course of the last year my brakes were getting worse and my front rotors were severely warped. I took off the front tires to find that these great Brembos (not), the pads were wore down to 2mm friction thickness and like I said earlier the rotors were warped. The place where I bought them from said that Brembo had some quality issues around that time and they did exchange everything for free. If OEM Ford ones were not so damn expensive I would have went that route. Well I have learned my lesson. Always go OEM.

Just want to add a thanks - this video and another one got me through my first brake job! Only hurdle to overcome was a piston that would not compress. Had to go to Auto Zone and rent a compression kit that would turn the piston while pushing on it. Worked like a charm and since rentals are free with deposit, cost me nothing! Unless I don't return it! ;)

Thanks. Always great to see a detailed video of this. I have rudimentary tools, but enough to do a proper job. An old torque bar, which is why the wheel needs to be turned so it can fit . By the way , 129 ft-lbs is not so easily done! It was a little concerning as the previous Brake job, done by a place starting with "P", had the Caliper plate bolts at 60 ft-lbs! I looked at a few different videos to get a good sense of what to do and look for. You cover the bases so thanks again.

I too was initially taught to use anti seize. Many years ago, I got to meet a bendix rep. The rep told me anti seize is a petroleum product that deteriorates the rubber boots. Of course, the rep introduced me to some bendix brake lube that does work well.

the biggest thing, make sure you rotate the "piston/tool" around some once it bottoms out to free up the internals and align the piston 180 degree from the brake pad width, ( the "pin" on back of brake pad needs to seat into the caliper notch. I've had them hang up and rotate on initial brake apply (slack take-up) so always check that before placing wheels on, use a mirror if needed :|

A good idea to step on the brake pedal a few times after putting everything back together to push out the pads. And also good to take the vehicle for a short drive and make a few stops at varing speeds to bead in the pads and check for proper operation and noise.

I should do brakes on my car this summer too. Front rotors are pretty bad! Havent changed them since i bought the car 2007 :) But have worked good since then. Only changed pads. I have a Volvo S40N -2006 and its built on the Ford chassis. (FoMoCo) Ford Focus C-MAX OEM rotors or Aftermarket ones? how important is that? OEM at the Volvo stealer are quite expensive. Brake system is ATE. I have like maybe 8mm to 1cm left on the pads at the front. Do i have to change them also when i change the rotors?

Just did a brake job on a 2012 Town and Country yesterday. Rear pin was frozen causing a spongy feel to the pedal. Rotors were stuck brought out my snap-on air hammer and couldn't get the rotor to break free (weak sauce), brought out the IR (Ingersoll Rand) and took only two squeeze of the trigger to break the rotor free. Heated the bracket with the frozen pin and got the pin moving, only casualty was the rubber boot, which I had to cut before applying the torch to the bracket. Don't really like breathing burning rubber. Great video!

I like to open the bleeder screw when compressing the piston. It prevents fluid reentering the master cylinder, it gets a lot easier to compress, and more importantly it prevents the possibility of triggering an ABS code.

Great video, I do recommend using eye and earring protection, you’ll never know how valuable until unfortunately too late.

easy as pie front brakes, the guide pins rarely ever have seizing issues, the clips can be finger eater/flying eye-killers though :)) the rear brakes are a bit funkier, but still not super bad

Do you have to enter the vehicle into the service mode when just doing the front brakes only? Appreciate it Brother

Most state library websites have factory level service information (in Arizona we have Chiltons online) completely free for its citizens. Repair info, wiring diagrams, TSBs. I'm surprised more people don't take advantage of it.

Timothy Barney that sucks. Many states offer it. In Arizona you don't even need a library card. Just enter a zip code and you're in!

I don't know that you will see this Eric, but I was wondering what or who's brake pad/rotor brand preference you have? I have used the garbage from Autozone, and not only do they not last, but they are noise prone. I also tried the O'reilly Brakes Best premium ceramic pads with the store brand rotors and had growling/squeak problems with them as well. ( their shoes are terrible as well) I used to use CQ Raybestos red box pads and never had an issue, even w cheap rotors. I can't get those anymore unless I special order them online from somewhere. I have since switched to the Wagner TQ line, but those are pricey and can be a tough sell. Thoughts would be appreciated. Thx!

What kind of air hammer and attachment did you use to take off the rotor? I had a set of rear rotors I could not get off and tried all my tricks. I think I need some air tools
