In this video I swap out the starter on my 2013 John Deere 5055E that has a failed solenoid. This thing has cranked over slow for a few years and now it's time to fix it right.

They don't like the screwdriver trick because once the tractor starts to run you over -- it doesn't stop very easily. I'm sure they had enough people start it in gear to try to slow down the suicide starter fellas.

A quick way to clean that battery acid/ corrosion off is to sprinkle a good amount of baking soda on there, and just pour some hot/ warm water over it. Even on your corroded battery terminals-- just place the terminal flat onto the top of the battery, and fill up the open ring full of baking soda, and pile a little more on top and wash over it with some hot water --- it will have shinny new copper inside that ring-- inside the battery terminal. I was actually surprised at how well it works. I bet hydrogen peroxide would work well too, maybe.... You can buy a case of baking soda on flee bay for nearly nothing. It's good to have around-

When I was growing up, Dad has his toolbox and a nice assortment of tools he kept in the garage. I was notorious for borrowing a tool , or two, and not putting it back in the toolbox. He often found them lying on ground, somewhere in the yard, and I would get yelled at again for not putting tools away where I found them. When my boys were old enough, I would often insisted they help me with projects that required mechanical tools. I taught them how to use a wrench, a ratchet and socket, screw drivers, different kinds of pliers, so on and so forth. When we were finished the project, they would help me wipe off the tools, and put them back in the toolbox. You know, I never had any problems with them borrowing tools and leaving them out. I tried to be a better father to my boys than my father was to me. I was successful is some areas, and not so successful, in other areas. Such is life. Good memories though!! Funny story about Dad and his planted corn. For years, Dad used to go around his small planted patch of corn and take a leak here and there to try and keep the deer out of the corn. One day, 6 or 7 years ago, dad comes in the house and ask my mom, "Hey, how long have them houses been back there on the other side of creek?" (the creek was the boundary between our land and the neighbors land...and the corn was planted 10 feet from the creek) Mom says, "oh, about 10 years or so". Dad replies, " Oh shite, I guess I better stop pissing back there before someone calls the cops" . Mom told that story at Thanksgiving dinner that year and we all roared with laughter, even Dad too. Great story.

Morning coffee and A SMA video, can't go wrong. My first foray into tractors was my neighbors Kioti ck20. He had a stroke a couple years ago and does not have good mobility on his right side. He still gets out there to mow and plant his garden. That's another whole story. Anyway, the only way he could shut it off was to clutch kill it. Which was not working to good. I tore into it and eventually found a cooked wire (small neg.) from the battery. The cause was a chaffed wire at the alternator. Out comes the harness, replace wire and amazingly, everything works as advertised. Thanks to watching your videos my inspection skill have improved. Thanks for reading! Remember, If I can do it, you can do it!

1:15 I had a similar situation on a Case IH 235. I did install a new starter, but being the curious type, I disassembled the old starter to diagnose. What I found was that one lead on one brush was improperly routed. As the brush wore, the brush spring could not force the brush against the commutator. Long story-short, I rerouted the wire and now have a spare starter. Regards.

My first experience of someone jumping a starter, when I first started at a shop as a oil lube tech way back when, a tech had a truck in his bay, an early 90’s F150 and the shifter was messed up and the car was in reverse, him and a manager were doing something on the car and I remember the manger saying “here just give me a screwdriver”, well he jumped the starter and immediately the tires squealed and the car shot backwards out the bay, the two of them tried hanging onto the bumper with utter failure, one of the other guys chased it out of the shop and tried reaching through the window and failed, the trucked ended up smashing right into the front bumper of the tech that was working on it who had his truck parked out back. Definitely gave me an early experience of making sure you know damn well what you’re doing and don’t get sloppy lol

Don't know for sure about USA but it has been illegal in Canada for many years to sell a tractor that is easy to start with a screwdriver- at least back to the JD 5010. Thanks for the excellent video- Informative and entertaining without too much B.S. I used your info to change the starter on my 2013 5065E. It has always clicked a couple times then started slow. For years I thought that was just how it was. It recently got to the point it would only click. I opted for a $150.00 starter from Amazon v/s the $510.00 one from Deere. Man what a difference! Wish I had changed it years ago! Fires up as soon as I turn the key - no click, no drag. -- And thanks for mentioning the wrench sizes as you went! - Saved me a lot of guess work and running back and forth to the toolbox. @16:06 Lower taxes on unfinished projects on houses. There was a guy in Gallupville, NY that had a brick house. Over the years he renovated the house but the last 4 or 5 courses of bricks remained unfinished. It was a problem as it was under the eaves and protected from water intrusion. This went on for years. When I asked someone who knew the guy what that was all about, he said that the minute he finishes, his property taxes will go up as a full assessment of the project being done. So, he never finished it!😂

I've got a 50A DB electrical alternator on my 2006 Kubota B7800 (Upgrade from factory PM dynamo) - price was right (< $100), seems to be a ND (Nippondenso, now "Denso"). Working well, can now run 2 big light bars, stereo and cell phone charger. You can buy direct from DB online. Pretty sure most 'name brands' are the same as the DB etc. repackaged ala NAPA Dorman. a lot of those solenoids use a copper disk which sometimes be flipped or dressed back up in a pinch. Fix it up and you have a spare.

But then again when would you get some down time just to relax or are you on the go every working hour? You have such a way of explaining and are entertaining to watch. That Harbor Freight air ratchet is a really good buy. I’ve had mine over 5 years now with daily use and zero problems

When you mentioned the 4 volt drop across the solenoid and the symptoms of it sometimes taking several tries before the starter would work my mind went back to my 72 Olds Cutlass. About a month after I got it I started having the old hard start issue with the starter not cranking until you tried it 2 or 3 times. When I went to take it off to fix it I saw the nightmare that was going to happen if I started taking the exhaust pipe off so I could get the starter out of the tight spot it was in. So I tried the old take the battery cable off, loosen the back nut on the battery bolt on the solenoid and rotate it half a turn, then put it back together. It worked. I never had another problem out of that starter. After the car was hit in two separate accidents and totaled, I pulled the engine and transmission to put in a 67 Ford pickup. My concern about pulling the exhaust pipe was confirmed but having the engine out made getting the broken studs out much easier. That 350 Rocket engine made that pickup a nightmare to drive. The only person who never had any problem driving it was my very petite wife. I had it turn around in the road a few times unintentionally before I got the hang of driving it and one guy at a tire shop nearly ran through the shop with it. If you didn't know what it would do it would take off like a bat out of well you know what I mean.

Started the video... aww crap, I accidentally clicked on Donyboy73's channel but behold it's Eric. Well it's not the classic "There's your problem lady" but it will do. Thanks Eric ✌️✌️

Great video. You are talented. Good to see your tractor working. My Uncle used to have an A2 that you started by turning a flywheel. Glad you don't have to do that!

Nice to see you fixing something for yourself for a change :-D What a difference a new starter motor makes, fast and snappy. Toads are harmless, i've had to pick them up and move to a safe place while im mowing the garden. No need to hurt them.

Oh I know they are but when the dogs pick them up in their mouths, the toads pee and it make the dogs mouths foam like crazy. It's kinda funny really...
