Eric one more thing to say... the bolt for removing the caliper can be actually undone with a very flat thin spanner and finally using a long nose pliers without removing the upper control arm.Once again thank you for your videos.!!

I think it's good that Eric O realizes that his channel will always draw new viewers as stated by his occasional opener. Sometimes as loyal viewers we forget that although we have watched all his past videos, not everyone new to SMA has done so. So I think it's important not to skip over important procedures/instructions/pointers about doing a quality brake service. Treating every video as if it was the first is an important thing to remember as new subscribers are "ringing that bell" every single day. Also, I respect Eric O's workspace so I would never call the shop unless I was booking a repair job but I think it might not be so productive to call these people, "wacky KZbinrs" since they all support your channel in one form or another. That isn't the first time I've heard that comment so I just wanted to point it out.

We had an '03 Elantra that needed an emergeny tire change; hubby (who could at that time have done it himself without thinking twice) couldn't get the wheel off; it had rusted to the wheel hub. Had to have it towed to a shop to get it done. Glad they've addressed that issue in (or before?) the '10 model.

That entire rear suspension system on that gen Elantra is a pain in the butt. Not just the control arm but all those bushings which seem to always go bad. On a positive note I could do timing belts on those all day long...Super easy and quick.

Great job! I do the same with the adjusters...i grease them good after cleaning them out. Only difference i put a light coating of antiseize on the face of the hub and a little on the face of the drum/rotor where the wheel mounts... Being doing it this way for almost 25 yrs now, and never had issues. Also, i slip a little block of wood between piston and ears of the caliper and step on the pedal to force the piston out a bit and lube the sides of the piston aswell, before compressing it back into the bore. Too many times, especially on rear brakes, do i see seized calipers! Thanks for taing the time to post these vids

If you happen to be watching this vid in preparation of doing your first break job a word of advice. I have an 09 Kia Spectra and went to replace my pads and rotors. First time doing a break job. Discovered that my rear pads had seized in the brackets due to rust. Well got them out and cleaned the brackets up and put everything together. Big noob mistake right there that cost me in the long run. Rear calipers were shot from the seized pads. About 6 months later the calipers started to stick real bad and finally seized up. Rear wheel got so hot I had to have it towed to a shop. Replaced the wheel bearings too because of the heat possibly fouling them up. So if you find in yourself in a similar situation dont make the mistake I did. Lesson learned.

I pretty much do exactly this. Remove rust from metal surfaces and lube up brackets and pins and shins on pad. Always lube parking break hardware, as this ALWAYS seems to be an issue. No lube on any bolts as it’s not necessary. And your good. Been doing it since I was 16 and I get nice even wear.

Did the rear brake pads and rotors on my daughter's MK4 Jetta last year. Put a new parking brake cable on one side. Almost put both on, since the other original looked pretty cruddy, but worked smoothly. Not even 6 mo. later, she starts dragging driver's side rear wheel (It's a 5 speed, so she uses the parking brake every day). I figured "Shame on me, I should've replaced both".....Nope. New one failed...Doorman... The cable looked like it was just handed over the counter to me, but won't budge... Advance warrantied it for me...but geez... glad I left the old crappy looking cable on the pass. side! It still works great!

I can't wait to get this lift set up! I'm soooo sick and tired of rolling around on the ground. It's kicking my butt! Can really tell I ain't 18 anymore. I still get the work done, and done right ... but it takes me 6x as long. Half the time is trying to get back up off the ground, lol. :D I spray 'em all too - I just use Amsoil Heavy Duty Metal Protector. A little spendy, but I like the way it sets up, similar to Cosmoline.

I hear you on the hard to get up and working on the ground. Always have done my own work so 15 yrs ago when I turned 50 I built a 40x32 garage with 12 walls and a lift. Made my life and working on cars a dream come true. The lift was about $2500 but when you factor in the costs of paying some one else for even a brake job now days it is paid for. Many thanks to Eric O for his skills and sharing. I found him when doing the timing belt on my subaru and confused by the 2 crank marks. Thanks again Eric for your subaru series!

you build it we destroy it - LOL, yeah pretty much! :D Nice, William - I'm in the process of doing the same. Put a 30x26 addition on the 38' barn this fall. Problem was thanks to the -16°F temps we had in December, the water that hadn't drained out of the clay here froze, and heaved the floor up. Figures too - I was scheduled to pour the next day! So now I've got a HUGE pile of money tied up, a lift sitting outside on pallets wrapped up in a huge tarp, and no floor in the new building. Have to wait until the ground hardens up a bit (mud bog from all the freeze/thaw, snow, & rain we've got), and the ground thaws out - I'll have to get the excavation guy back here to run the compactor over it again. Until then I'm wrenching outdoors, but I've been doing that for almost 3 decades now, so not a huge deal. Biggest problem is losing money when it rains, which is nearly every day this time of year. Will sure be glad when this nightmare is behind me!!

To be honest I would be too lazy to lower the car to tighten the sway bar bushing bolts. I would live dangerously take a chance and tighten it as is. Maybe it's not a proper but that's what most of us would probably do that's why you're the expert good job.

What a great design, putting that control arm blocking the caliper bracket bolt.. lol 9:07 Usually it's mechanics and professional drivers who are the only ones to use the parking brake with an automatic transmission. I constantly see people who are parked on a hill, jump in, start it up, rip it out of park, and the poor park pin in the transmission makes that awful sound they always make under stress, sometimes leading to the pin failure so park no longer holds. Word of advice; when you park, engage the park brake, then put it into park, before taking your foot off the brake pedal. When getting back into the vehicle, reverse the process. Not only good for the transmission in the long run, also good for the parking brake system so it keeps working freely.

It’s a good tip to give a toot of fluid film on the hand brake mechanism. It is used so infrequently and the degree of movement so small that it just asks for corrosion to seize it up.

Has that Elantra been in NY its whole life? Looks pretty damn good after 7 years in the rust belt compared to some of the rustbuckets we've seen you work on. Not quite sure why tend to they stick that caliper bracket bolt in behind the control arm. I'm guessing that road salt isn't as much of a thing in Korea and the engineers don't really anticipate having to replace the rotors all the time when changing the pads. Sort of like those old Japanese cars with the captive rotors I imagine.

The 2011 and newer Elantra uses different rear suspension. On your daughter's car, you don't have to disconnect any suspension arms, making the job a lot quicker and easier. Your daughter's car also uses a different rear caliper that has the integrated parking brake. You need to spin the piston to retract it, don't try pressing it in with channel locks.

It's important to use, every time in fact. in some states if your car gets hit parked and it's parking brake isn't engaged and goes into someone else's property you are at fault for that damage and not the person that hit your car. Parking pawls aren't as strong as most think nor meant as the primary means to keep the vehicle stationary. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parking_pawl#/media/File:Pawl_brake_engaged.png The parking pawl was implemented to replace the effect leaving a car parked in gear had in adding an extra security layer to keep the vehicle from rolling. With a hydo coupled automatic transmission in any gear with the engine off the transmission is effectively in neutral. So the Parking pawl restored the 'being in gear' capacity with the engine off.

Tip: Ever find yourself being ever living snot out of the rotor to get it off and notice she is loose but just won't slide all the way off? Depending on how heavily rusted your parking brake drum is you may have to back the parking brake star off some being a rust lip may have formed on the outer most lip of the drum.

The beginning of this video reminded me to ask- I am planning to buy a HF Earthquake electric 3/8" ratchet; how much force (torque) will it handle when removing a fastener in just non-electric mode? I dunno what the spec is but I have pushed on it to what I would figure to be about 80-90ft lbs... I am thinking it was all she wanted. Just have to choke up on so you don't push on the battery. Might find that info in the book, assuming they have one :)

I like to spiff up those wheels on cars with the spoked hubcaps by painting them with flat black paint. Just get you some Rustoleum in a rattle can and wire brush off the wheels. Wipe 'em down with mineral spirits and blast away! It makes those hubcaps really pop. Give it a try sometime! (Just to be clear here -- paint the wheels after removing them from the vehicle.)

I use my parking brake every time I park. I confused the people at the tire shop once and at the dealership when I had it in for warranty work. My family hates getting into a vehicle that I have driven last because they always just drop it into gear and try to go and the car wont move.....

Eric O. 2009 Chevy Malibu with U2143 SAS module code affecting tc. I just replaced the electronic steering control unit and that took away the steering wheel from shaking. Any thoughts? Did I get another bad unit. From researching it says that sensor is located within the unit I installed. Always something!

i knew a flatlander who never used his parking brake till his 3 on the tree car popped out of gear and rolled down a slight grade backwards a hunred yards or so on a busy 4 lane suburban divided road .wedging itself on the divider, and bending the frame . he sold the car. for peanuts cuz the frame repair was way more than the value of the car. this guy was an engineer......imagine that. !,

Just beat it, beat it, beat it, beat it No one said that you should sing it!!! Hey... I always use my Parking Brake, I was taught to park, and before putting the car in Park, apply the Parking Brake, let my foot off the brake pedal and then put it in park. I was told it kept the pressure off the tranny etc. I check/adjust the PB every 6 months... Don't know if it really helps though.

Is it standard procedure to do just one side on the brakes?........maybe take the other half of the brake pads back for money back!....J/K You should do a video on rear brakes on a newer VW Jetta or bug! Their caliper bracket "bolts" are a piss poor design! Another great video!

Hey Eric, do you turn new rotors before you put them on? I know a lot of people that do and swear by it, I realize for Johnny homeowners who has the time it's no big, but for a shop it could be. Do you personally do it for each job or only if customers request?

I never turn new rotors. New drums yes but not new rotors...
