With all these newer vehicles going to these "capless" systems, it's great to see a video about how a purge solenoid can be there real problem versus going on a wild goose chase looking back at the tank/filler neck. Great video.

Very informative as usual. That said, this is the kind of video where you (Eric) employ reasoning and technique involving several parts of a system that may be slightly mysterious to viewers, in which a quick white-board-of-knowledge would double the interest and education. I for one have not been entirely clear on how the gas tank, evap canister, the purge valve and intake manifold relate, and what part does what during what phase of operation. And how that does or doesn't relate to systems that seem to have a dedicated vacuum pump to test gas tank leaks.

another thing that can cause the evap code is a dirty seal in the capless fuel fill neck. i have had this happen on my 13 explorer and my 2010 f150. used the out of gas adapter and WD-40 to clean and refresh the seal. the explorer required the use of a rag as well which is pretty difficult to do but it beats replacing the fill neck.
@Sheeeeeeeeeeeeiiitt Жыл бұрын
Do you clear the codes after or let the computer do that on its own? Also i’m getting P0442. Thank you
@majornofun1503 Жыл бұрын
@@Sheeeeeeeeeeeeiiitt cleared the codes and waited to see if it set codes again. you really have to jam the fuel funnel in there like 90 times after spraying the WD-40 a bunch in-between thrusts. It might also be the purge valve though if it doesn't clear after 3 full drive cycles and you have a good seal at the inlet.

I wonder if the o2 sensor code pops up because you just forced those fuel gases into the intake without the truck doing it itself. I wonder if it starts a sequence when it uses the evap system where it knows afr eill go to crap so ignore the sensor until it's done with the test. By doing it manually you're probably testing the solenoid itself and not commanding a check thus the truck reading rich rather than normal 14.7:1 or whatever it is for that truck on idle. Regardless, great video!! I like how people like you explain things so we can save time and money chasing gremlings! Keep it up bro!!!! Watching from PR!!!

One of our 2014 F-150's with the 5.0 Coyote had the 'ck. fuel inlet' message come up. I didn't have the scan tool with and I was out on the road. For the hell of it I took a 1/2 " pipe nipple , cut the threads off one end , put a coating of oil on it and inserted it in the fuel fill. Didn't hear nothing from the driver for about 6 months and the message came back. It ended up being the gas fill neck.
@Sheeeeeeeeeeeeiiitt Жыл бұрын
Great idea! Gonna keep that one in my back pocket…do you recall the code? Mine is P0442. Did the code clear itself once you inserted the nipple? I know the fuel inlet valves are prone to having sealing issues due to debris. I plan to smoke test it but if it turns out to be the filler hose I may have to stop by the local hardware and stock up on those nipples lol thanks

Hey Eric -- quick question. At the beginning of the vid, when you commanded the purge solenoid on (with the scan tool) and did not see a corresponding reduction in tank pressure, you concluded that either the scan tool was not working, the vacuum line was plugged or the the purge solenoid was bad. Couldn't a faulty fuel tank pressure sensor also cause the symptoms you were seeing? What allows you to rule that out right away? Thanks again for your channel, Eric. Best one on YT bar none!!!

What is with Ford and them needing percussive maintenance lol....... Their old IAC was the same way,most times a little tappy tap would get it going for a little bit. I used to keep one on the truck when the town had mostly crown Vic's and I saved tons of people from having to go to a strange shop while on vacation with the tap from my lucky screwdriver. I once bet a guy $20 I'd get his car to keep from stalling in less than a minute. He said he'd give me a $100 if I could,he was shocked when it worked lol. I tried not to take it but he snuck it inside a few singles his wife put in my shirt pocket with a thank you note. Apparently another tow company had been there and was trying to get a tow to PA but didn't have the room for his 84 year old mother and him for the trip.

I’m a shade tree, myself, so I’ve got a lot to learn, but I’m learning as I go. I am curious, why is the tank under vacuum? Is it to help with fuel delivery, or is it to stop vapours escaping, and forces them into the canister? Cheers!
@anthonybeaudry60666 жыл бұрын
Thats how ford checks their evap systems for leaks. it pulls a vacuum on the fuel tank with intake manifold vacuum through the vent solenoid. if it does not see the fuel tank pressure go negative it sets a code for a leak.

My 2010 F-150 4.6 shows that cluster message every once and a while....I end up squirting some oil on the inlet spring (where the fuel nozzle goes) and using the manufacturers supplied funnel to operate (to work in the oil) (I could do this when I fill up and use the fuel nozzle to operate the door) and cleaning the door of debris (this helps seal the system)....clear the code with a scan tool and voila....I guess I've been lucky.....

I had the same problem with my Acura TL, I would get the "check gas cap light " and it would randomly have a hard start because it would get stuck open which would put to much fuel vapor in the combustion chamber.
