In this video I have a look at a customers 2014 Chevy Tahoe that came in with a complaint of a Service Suspension System message being displayed on the dash as well as the ABS and Stability light being on. I gave it a look over several weeks ago and now it is back to be fixed.

These air sus systems are about as useful as penetrating oil on a rusty fastener. The pump is where it can be jetwashed by crud from the rear wheels and the air intake is at the apex of the inner and outer body panels where there is lots of condensation with no filter or dryer. And they stop working. Who knew.? That frame looks better than some you have shown us.

OK here's my NY corrosion story. Bought a full sized 2000 RAM van in 2002. Lovely vehicle, ran great, put a ton of miles on it, the only repair before it died (other than regular maintenance) was an idler pulley came off on a road trip through PA, the whole thing was just a great reliable vehicle. I thought the rear bench seat seatbelts were getting kind of crusty around 2012, figured for giggles I would stop in a junk yard in Richmond, VA and pick up some seat belts or anything else that I needed for my old gal. In that junk yard was the exact same vehicle on its side. Perfect. Not a spec of rust anywhere on the underbelly. Meanwhile mine is in the parking lot with about 30% weight reduction front to rear. I should have parked them side-by-side and swapped engine, transmission etc as mine had fewer miles and driven the scrapped one home!

Haha i had the same idea today as i needed a steering gear for a 2000 Chevy 3500HD as it sat a while here in Boston and the gear has a pinhole now in it and looked up one at a junkyard and it looked so much better than what i was working on.

I have 05 Tahoe 200k I replaced my air ride system with Arnott shocks and compressor when it first went out. They have a life time warranty on the compressor. They have honored that warranty flawlessly three times. The Shocks have been perfect. Worth the money to keep that system working. I live in a Salt state, Michigan. Thanks to Eric and fluid film it still in one piece.

Arnott now has a 24 month warranty on units purchased after 7-1-23. Dorman & FCS still have a lifetime warranty on the compressor.

You just made me think,maybe the splash guard should be on the other side of the unit.Since you drive forward most of the time. Where it's at now ,it acts like a SCOOP. Not supporting GM or any manufacturer but if you have an under vehicle spare and don't "exercise" the mount once a year they will seize up. Splash shields can prevent direct impact from road debris, but they can also block wash water from cleaning the built up dirt and salt off of things. Take your choice.

Penetrating oil does work, but you need to give it hours, not minutes. Liquid Wrench is what I use.

Same, I saved a 2001 Ford Expedition from the junkyard with only 195k miles on it. It needed work but I’ve replaced all the brakes and coolant, gonna do the windshield since it’s cracked, and gonna repair the AC system next spring. I found out that the truck has had the coil spring conversion done to it at some point, so I have an air compressor that tries to run but there’s no airbag to be filled. I’m going to try and convert it back to air ride at some point. Mind you, it’s an 01 and I feel like it can still have a lot life left in it as long as I maintain it. I picked it up for $500 so I don’t mind spending a little money to make it good again.

And a very good morning to you, Eric. This is your buddy out here in California. I am extremely shocked that the customer decided to change the pump out. Even though we’re not in the rust belt. I would say in the last 30 years I’ve changed the pumps out, maybe 10 times at best. and the truth be known we were a body shop for a long time and that’s when we changed out those pumps. Damage and accidents. So I guess it’s safe to say most people don’t even bother. Like you said they are very expensive. The vehicle can still drive reasonably well without it. Ron.

Our winters here in Germany are just as snowy and salty as they are in New York, yet rust hasnt been a big issue since the 1990s. Before that, yes, an 8 year old car was a rust bucket near the end of its life span. Today I own two cars 23 and 26 years old, Opel and VW, and I intend to keep driving them for many years.

Eric has stated that he lives in an area with lots of dirt roads. NY brines the dirt roads for dust control. So the vehicles are getting salted all year, every day. I believe the dirt brine is worse than the salty snow. The dirt brine sticks and stays.

@@kevinbarry71Part of the problem is that winters in upstate New York aren’t that cold. I’m in Manitoba, and our winters here are actually cold. Yes, we use salt, but not as much, We might not get as much snow as NY…but a good portion of our winter is at a temperature where the road salt is not effective, and the roads and the salt residue remain dry. You can wash a vehicle here in the winter, and have periods measured in weeks before it is considered “dirty” again. I know THAT doesn’t occur on a regular basis out east.

I live in Oswego, NY and the Salt and snow here gets pretty bad. Especially since the city started using a mix if normal rock salt on the road but also liquid salt brine. You can imagine how rusty your car can get. I've got a 09 dodge grand caravan 3.3l with just over 100k miles. My frame and underside are not half as bad as the vehicles that Eric works on. It just blows my mind how disintegrated they usually are.

Project Farm has a good video on penetrating oils. They help, but you can't just squirt and go right at it. If you go right at it, they do help lubricate the rusty exposed threads so the whole mess doesn't become blazing hot.

My small one bay shop has far fewer parts to install but your comments as to quality are good information as to best source. Recently, I have had a Toyota prius as small repair to front bumper. The customer working out as to new bumper vs minor prep to matching paint as scrapes and defect to retainers. (small plastic clip points with cracks and slight defect as bumper to fender attachment). These models required care as to cooling, with several pumps and where antifreeze must be changed to protect the various system. And where the maint must take care as to the *Orange high voltage hazard. AT the plastic, I simply recommend new parts to best repair. A kooky job came to be present as a 2004 Jeep with a *purge system code (large leak) as intermittent fault. The unit has a long start cycle also so at task to determine *vac or leak down at fuel pump and where the code setting meets driveabilty. I truly learn from small comments as for instance, the o ring fit as speed sensor...and while less rust in Wa state, age to repair makes such jobs a sure near future set of problems. Thank you for posting with good humor and first class detail to repair as a work flow. I enjoy the views and learn from the various faults identified and solved. Regards. M.

No question penetrating oils don’t always work, but of all of them Kroil seems to offer the greatest chance of success. I learned about it from a guy who restored heavy (class 8) trucks aka semi tractors. Getting stuff to come loose on those things is a tad challenging.

This air shock video was quite interesting !!!! I had heard of air ride shocks with air bladders that worked great for the first year of a cars life, then all kind of problems, and never used again on vehicles because they were crap !!!! Nice to see Mrs. O. kickin' back in the office. her cooking just a slow simmering till it's just right, then do the meat and it's all ready !!!! That was a helluva compressor setup to operate them shocks. I recall my brother having some kind of after market air ride shocks on the back of his vehicle - think they were Gabriels, but not positive. That's going way back, maybe before your time Eric !!!!! Great work, nice job, happy customers means repeat work and lots of referrals and word of mouth advertising !!!!!!!

After watching SMA for at least 3 years, I still am still always amazed hown quickly cars degrade in the rust belt! I have a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.0 with 236,000 miles and not a bit of rust anywheres. Hell, the other engine has just began its midlife and with care and/or rebuild who knows how long it will go.

we went through many pumps and one set of shocks on our 07 suburban. Arnott saved our butts. Way cheaper than oem. The original shocks and struts went out around 120k mark. Replaced them once and drove it to 225k. Had to replace countless bypass sensors to get rid of the service message. In the last year the suspension computer rotted out so we put in a switch to toggle the pump relay and fill up the air bags manually. This system is great when it works though. Good ride and always level car when towing. Though, it does allow to over load the tongue weight and payload as the suspension really will hold up a lot of additionally weight. Gotta pay attention!

Eric O’…I repaired my Z55 Suspension. It started with the Exhaust Solenoid stuck on, which ran down my Battery while parked at the Airport. So, I replaced the Pump module. Still had issues. So next I replaced the Control Module. Which is that thing above the Spare Tire. Where it rusts out is the Voltage Regulator for the SCM. Only took 2 days to get the Spare down. Got a good used one on e-bay. Had to replace a couple of the Rods to the height sensors. Those rust in two. Since, I have replaced all 4 shocks. I shopped around and found the best deal. Really did not cost that much. Same AC Delco Shocks. After replacing the Front shocks, I found the brakes work better! I tow a trailer and I really like how the suspension levels out the ride.

Eric O I totally understand why this customer chose to fix this vehicle. With the ridiculousness high prices of vehicles these days along with the interest rates. It makes more sense to fix vehicles than to junk them. I get the fact that it might look a bit crusty rusty but as long the frame isn't busted or has more holes than swiss cheese. Along if the body isn't a rusted pile that you don't need windows down to get air then the vehicles are worth the fix. I do want to say I enjoy your videos and think you do a wonderful job at articulating how to do things. You're also one hell of a mechanic and not just a computer poker to diagnosis the issues. You spend the time to track down the fault and repair not just throw parts at it while hoping something works.

The day I had a customer bring an EGR valve in to replace his bad one (discovered on an emissions inspection) that he'd bought as a walk-in customer CHEAPER than my shop cost at the local NAPA store was the day I was done with NAPA. I can totally understand why a guy would be willing to put $1-2 K into parts to keep his ride going. I'm on the same path with a Massachusetts truck that is living on borrowed time as well. The thing is when you look at the price of a new (or nearly new) pickup, the repairs are about 2 months worth of payments. And to be honest, I think most new trucks ain't worth the investment. For most folks, about the time you wrap up the payments you are in the same position you were in 5 or 6 years ago. Plus, this strategy keeps really good shops like yours going strong.

My H2 had basically the same system. Air system worked great, one of the air shocks burst. I removed the entire system replaced with Springs from Amazon. Rides awesome now.

I too have had good luck with Mevotech TTX products. Ball joints in my Civic fit great and were a breeze to do The same line for my 2011 RAM not so much, could not press them in with the arm installed, had to use the shop press, took 5 tons to seat, then the CV axles interfere with the grease fittings. Only way to grease them is into the axle nut hold the axle back and add grease. Love the channel!! Keep it up. From a fellow salt belt tech North of the border.

Just this summer I converted a Cadallac Esclade, the same as that Tahoe, to standard suspension. The owner said that she was very satisfied with the ride. I recommend the conversation.

Great video..salt is what kills these things.up north..I'm down in Florida..I have my shop at home..I'm Simi retired.. I have inground lift in my shop.old school..I restored.. American restoration..from the late 1960s. Rotary..lift..I like a clean open floor ..no E.P.A. crap down here.lobe your interaction..on these videos...love your shop set up.... and kitchen.. office.. awsome..that's why I work from home. Wifes a good cook. Too

It is nice to see a customer putting some money into a little older vehicle to keep it in good shape for a change. Also as an individual I agree with your OEM parts discussion 100%, I always try to use OEM when possible instead of playing the change out game 2 or 3 times with after market stuff that’s junk more often than not.

Most probably - more people might start putting some money into repairing the older vehicle - new vehicles are just insanely expensive and , I have to say , I have wondered how new dealerships can stay in business - as it is my opinion that most working class Americans cannot afford to purchase a new vehicle and have been priced out of the market for a new vehicle. Eric - started this video with stating that he has not had any, many ? customers repair the crusted up vehicles in New York , that being said Eric - I think your auto repair business is going to grow as more people opt to repair their older vehicles ✌️YOU are surely one of the BEST AUTO TECHNICIANS to ever work on vehicles - not only do you possess the common sense of a 1,000 people but you also possess many years of vast experience - along with honesty. @@coycarlson4979 I am in Canada and here is one example of an insanely priced new vehicle. Local Ford dealer advertising a 2023 F150 regular cab 2wd XL (base model) no frills pickup. $58,000 plus tax/ fees so $68,000 out the door. It’s going to sit there and rot into the ground at that price.

Back in 2004 I worked at a Hummer dealership when an H2 came in because the air compressor didn't shut off. The compressor not shutting off caused one of the air springs to pop. We had it in the shop when the air spring popped which was LOUD and sounded like an explosion. Those compressors might look small but can put out enough pressure to pop an air spring that supports several thousand pounds. So be careful when working with air spring suspensions.

You reminded me of how lucky I am, not dealing with all that rustification! I recently replaced the air shocks on my parents' 2011 Buick Luciferne. The dealer diagnosed it (to the tune of $188!), but would not repair it because an OEM ride height sensor was not available. I put AC Delco shocks on (old ones leaking) and mounted a little control panel with a gage, Schrader valve, and toggle switch under the lip of the trunk. Connected it to the original compressor. I never did find the suspension control module on the car. Thankfully, the car didn't have the electrical connector on the shocks. Looked at online parts, and the available variable damping really complicated the task of identifying the correct replacement parts.......

I lived in pittsburgh for 3 years. The house I bought had an integral garage with a floor drain and water spigot. I had a big reznor heater installed to warm it. Every time it snowed or iced up outside, i’d bring our 2002 Toyota sequoia into the garage, turn up the heat, then spray the bottom of the car with a telescopic wand sprayer. Car never developed any rust. Now live in deep south and dont have to worry about salt anymore.
