Autozone is the place when everything else is closed & you "might" find the part at twice the cost. This happened to my Ranger; belt squeaking, changed pulleys, tensioners, and a bad alternator and squeak continued. Not until I got under the truck and inspected the harmonic balancer and found what appeared to be a "two" pully system. Sure enough I was dumbfounded when I took it off and looked similar to one on your video. It's a miracle that that belt did not come off and tangle itself on the fan. Good video and thanks for sharing.

Tried getting a job at Autozone once. I interviewed with the assistant manager and he seemed visibly threatened by my experience working in an actual shop, since he told me he never so much worked at a quick oil change joint. So, I didn't get hired. No biggie. A few weeks later I went in to pick up some sway bar links that I had set aside and I found that the kid that they hired instead of me was the one "helping me". He didn't even know what sway bar links were and insisted that no such thing exists and it turned into a 15 minute fiasco with the assistant manager that hired this idiot over me just to get some damn bushings that were literally sitting in a box on the back counter. What a joke. A few years late commenting on this vid but hey I hope you get a good laugh out of my struggles 😂

Subaru told him about the balancer at last service.......

The real tip here is not the head fake by the harmonic balancer. It is that you made those threaded rods at various lengths with the one end squared off (for the socket?) and you knew they could help get that puller working. Awesome insight and ingenuity. ( A trick from meemaw? ). Great video Eric.

You have no idea how great a service that you provide to us in the KZbin community. I have a Ranger that quit while I was driving. I was thoroughly confused as I saw my coolant temperature climbing so high I was going to pull over. Before I did I saw the temperature fall back to normal. Continued driving and later the temperature shot up again. The engine shuddered slightly with spark knock (?) then quit. Internet searches resulted in my believing that it was a cracked head. After viewing this video I looked at the balancer and found chunks of rubber broken around the balancer. Just ordered the balancer and seal. You are a life saver.

Eric, all you have done is prove that you're actually human... when I watch some of your videos, you seem to be more than that! I've been in the parts end of the business for many years-- everything from Mom and Pop stores to dealerships starting when I was 17. One of the toughest things when you're young in the parts business is dealing with the oldtimers who think that just because you're young, you don't know anything. I used to love to prove them wrong, but the one thing I always did was treat them with respect! In my later years (I'm now retired), I would be working alongside of the "whippersnappers" who thought they knew everything, and would be gratified to see the oldtimers turn down assistance from the young'uns to wait for me to help them. Keep up the good work... I enjoy your videos!

You asked what it takes to get a job at Auto Zone, well I can tell you because I just started a 2nd job there earlier this month so that I can pay my wife's & daughter's doctor bills thanks to Obamacare. I have no auto experience other that working on my own & friends cars since I was a teenager. You are spot on when you mentioned the check box for a pause. AZ is hard up for workers because they currently have over 10,000 job openings in the US. When you called AZ they should have taken your number so that they could put the part on hold for you. If they gave you a hard time about the tax exempt claim then they most likely were a DIY store & not a commercial store. The commercial stores are the ones that handle selling to the local shops. I work at a DIY only store so I deal with idiot customers most of the time & 98.5% of the time they buy the Dorman or Valuecrap branded parts.
@wildbill23c6 жыл бұрын
I bought a set of valuecrap spark plug wires for my truck the other day...why? Because the over-priced set was garbage, intermittent no-spark on random cylinders and after jiggling around the plug wires it would work fine for a bit then start missing again...brand new engine and wasn't running on all 6 cylinders again...out came the ole brain and said well its gotta be the plug wires since when you move the wires around it starts missing/hitting. So to the parts store I went for the $20 plug wire set, 10 minutes problem solved. Just because you pay more doesn't necessarily mean you get a better product sometimes. I know that's often not the case but seems to be with already over-priced re-manufactured junk parts from these parts stores. I seem to have better luck pulling parts off vehicles at the Pick A Part lots HAHA!!.

don't feel bad Eric, I've made worse mistakes lol. As usual very entertaining to watch you and very educational. Keep up the awesome work. To answer your question I do work every third Saturday, including this one...

Eric O, you saved my tail. Was chasing a bad fuel pump on a 04 sport trac. Diaged a bad fuel rail pressure sensor. Truck ran but rough. I noted a loud belt squeal on startup. Got it running then gave her the beans then it sputtered and died. Chased back to no spark. Then I remembered this video from a while back. I went back to my original thought, loud belt squeak on startup. Then it lead me to looking at the balancer. Oh it’s got 2 pulleys, you can barely see it from the top. It all looked good. Then I had a buddy crank it. Pulleys we’re straight even the 2nd one? Wait this shouldn’t have a second one I thought lol. Went underneath and the crank sensor had a good ole cut in the side of it and the balancer “pulleys” should have been one. Crazy diag!

Ya know, I'm not gonna give you a thumbs down for making a mistake like that. We're all human. We make mistakes. Seriously though, thank you for leaving your mistake in the video. Shows honesty and character

The nirvana rant and a red green show reference...everything else in incidental. Keep your stick on the ice, Mr O.

I used to be one of those pimpley faced kids behind the counter of an auto parts store. I learned a lot.
