Cleaning the throttle has been my first step for any return to idle stalling or idle related issue for years, Like you said it is quick and easy and it eliminates one main possible cause. In my experience probably 80% of the issues are fixed by cleaning. A preliminary peek at IAC command % and fuel trims are a good idea also. Keep up the good work. You are on my list of recommended youtube channels I pass on to my students.

I always get in there and clean things especially higher milage build up,people dont realize the importance of a clean air intake system. I think you pretty much proved that. Any back yard mechanic can do what you did especially under a rough idle condition. You dont need fancy test tools just to pull the air box intake and clean things. Fords are good for that anyways. I had a Bronco 2 that had the same issue. I cleaned the throttle intake and it ran so much better. My dad told me always start with simple stupid things first before throwing parts at it. Then only do one thing at a time. Screwing with more than one thing at a time only causes more problems and you may never know exactly what part was causing the problem in the first place.

I just removed my airbox, intercooler and ducting (from cold air intake to throttle) for cleaning, as part of a deep clean of the engine bay to remove awful smells. During this I found that the cold air feed pipe was perished and cracked, and I only saw that cos I said "Eh, feck it, I'll take that out as well and give it a clean, it looks pretty skanky". I replaced that part, refitted the now gleaming pipes and fittings and the change is unreal. When I push down on the the accelerator, the van ACCELERATES. Like immediately, not eventually. Absolutely delighted! Now if only I had some work to drive to...

I can always tell what it is because at lower speeds, the van becomes sluggish and almost unresponsive but above 45 mph its fine. This last time, it wouldn't even move without stalling out until I removed the connector to the sensor only then would it hold an idle and run. As soon as I replaced the sensor, it runs like a champ. My 04 Trail Blazer required an intake and Mass airflow sensor clean every 2 or 3 years. I could tell a huge difference in performance after cleaning and milage greatly improved every time.

Basic maintenance and suspension parts, DeX-Kill flush, oil and transmission fluid and filter change performed. Boots for the spark plug wires were literally disintegrating during removal. All said $1100 total invested for a basic ride that runs like a champ, and I'm selling it this week for 2k. A little know how and some elbow grease go a long way.

I tried the relearn a few times and no luck.. I used my Snap on Verus and reset the throttle position sensors and Wow , what a sweet idle and power ...hopefully guys out there with the Hondas use a scanner to reset the TPS if there having the Same issue I did. If not they will pay the dealership to have a new throttle body installed , cause that is what they told me I needed before using my Verus. I called them on the phone and that it what the service told me they would have to do. Beware fellows..

Hey Eric! This video got me to thinking about some problems I'd been having with my 05 Acura TL 3.2 6 speed manual. I was having trouble with a hunting hot idle, or flare, hot start and stall, throttle response lag ( tip in ) and poor mileage. I took the fully electronic throttle body off after looking at scan data, of which I saw nothing out of the ordinary, to find that there was serious carbon build up in the shaft to throttle bore area. It wasn't sticky per se, but just quite a bit of build up. Sea Foam plus carb cleaner and an old toothbrush cleaned it up like new, and I'll tell ya, I am amazed at the difference. Tip in response is like new, idle quality is perfect, and hot restarts are now non problematic. I was careful not to get fluid into the port that goes into the electronic portion of the TB. I'm thinking that would be bad for the stepper gears, sensors, etc. Anyhow, you brought me back to the basics. In the 90's cleaning a TB was part of every tune up. Thx!

Great diagnosis of the problem. Had a 2000 Chevy Silverado 5.3L required a throttle body cleaning every so often. Main issue, the throttle plate would stick closed after engine off for a while. Then when it was started again, it would require more gas pedal pressure to get it moving, OFTEN resulting on a sudden surge of the engine. Especially bad if it was in gear already. Had one occasion when I had to back out from a parking space, pressed on the gas pedal to get it moving. Suddenly the throttle plate came loose and the truck surged back wards, almost hitting a vehicle that was driving by. Now, have a 2013 GMC Sierra 5.3L . Don't have that problem, but will clean the throttle body while changing the air filter to make sure the throttle plate is not developing the same issue like the Silverado. THANKS FOR MENTIONING THE TYPE OF THROTTLE BODY CLEANER TO USE ON THE DIFFERENT VEHICLES...Don't want to have the throttle body replaced because I got it TOO CLEAN..

What I discovered when I run into intermittent stalling was to put in a can of fuel injection cleaner into the gas tank when its down to less then a 1/8 of a tank...run the vehicle for like 5 miles...then fill the tank...it seems to usually works...I think most of these problems stem from using cheap gas. So I tell the customer to buy better quality gas such as Shell or Chevron...

Great video Eric ! I've found Amsoil PowerFoam or CRC Intake cleaner to do quick work of the carbon buildup in both the throttle body and the idle air control valve. Their foaming action really does clean out the tiny crevices and ports that are hard to get to with a brush. You'll just see all the crud float out of there with the foam, and they leave a light oil behind to help ward off any corrosion. Highly recommended !

That label was there due to so many throttle sensors failing from solvent spray getting in. The best safe way is cleaner on rag, not heavy soaking on rag, and wiping the bore and edge of blade. Even the stuff described as safe is not good if it leaks into TPS. Then you need to relearn idle speed on most makes or you will think you broke it.

@@HowardJrFord Yeah, but in the meantime he's replaced every other part on the vehicle. Real pieces of slag from my experience. Built to self destruct at 150K (if you're lucky). The trucks anyway. AutoZone loves them. Every night AZ owners pray, "Please Lord of Profit, help Ford stay in business.". At 150K replace every part on them and in another year or so start over. I think the term is planned obsolesence but in the case of Ford it's just unplanned stupidity/poor engineering combined with greed and a total lack of concern for who ends up with a money pit. I have the exact same 4.0 in my 2002 Ranger. At 130k idle was starting to wander. This was the fix. Warning: Spark plug removal of original spark plugs on this engine will be difficult. Spark plugs bond over time in the heads and may need a good soak in penetrating oil.(for days) Going thru wheel wells can make it easier. Dual platinum plugs because of a waste spark system were installed at the factory in my 4.0 Plugs, wires.air and fuel filter. Basic tune up. @@PhllyFan_ It shouldn't change your idle unless it's an electric throttle body. If it is, it should be removed, cleaned then reinstalled then plugged back in. It is best to remove all throttle bodies for the best cleaning especially if it's really bad but it can be done on the vehicle.
