I think my first wrist watch was Chayka. I got it for my first communion when I was 9 😊

Great film, nice background music. The water resistance testing segment is hilarious! 😂 I don't own a Chayka, but I have 13 Russian watches: they always arrive running extremely fast but, because they use licensed copies of ancient Swiss movements, they are also very easy to regulate. 😊 Thanks for this. Subscribed. Cheers 🍻!

Everything in the soviet times was copies. The parts of poor quality.

I think those watches were pretty neat looking. I have a Russian wrist watch made in the early 1990s by s company called Romanknoff. It’s a copy of the well known Cartier watch from the early 1900s.

I like mechanical watches. I have 2 Vostok watches and a Seiko.

My (possibly unfair) impression of Soviet-made watches was that they either broke and stopped working immediately or kept working forever with no maintenance at all. Don't think I've ever heard of Chaika watches though, for some reason.

From someone who's grown up in the Soviet Bloc, no. It isn't an unfair impression.

I don't have a Chayka, but I do have a Sturmanskie chrononograph from the late Soviet period. It has the rare chrome 'Kapitan" submarine dial.

Not to be confused with the Yerevan Clock Factory. I wonder if there was a toaster factory somewhere.

It wasn't until I started watching Ushanka Show videos that I realized the true evil of communism.

Some of the lady's models with jasper, amber and other stones are REALLY valuable now if running well. A lot of lady's watches are really boring, but Chaika and Zaria (Belarus), had some of the best designs for women in watchmaking. Also, the old Zvezda women's watches of the 1950s are WAR-HORSES! I just had one come back from a customer, who works for the Postal Service this week to have a hand put back on, and it is obvious she wears it every day - strap is almost worn out, and the glass was completely dulled from fine wear. All polished up and ready to mail back out!

Soviet watches were at least semi-decent. Some western tourists used to make good profit by first exchanging their currency to Roubles in black market, then buying watches and finally selling them back in their home country. After Soviet authorities found this out, they required tourists to declare how many watches they have with them when entering Soviet Union. If when exiting the country you were searched and had more watches than you could have bought with Roubles you had exchanged in bank with official rate, you were screwed.

Were the watches confiscated?
@TheUglyGnome

@TheMexicoBear Of course they were. You could also get a hefty fine. But at least I can't recall anyone being sent to a nice "holiday" camp in Siberia for committing this serious crime. 😁

I don't have any Chayka watches, but I've got a bunch of Vostock Amphibias, 30 maybe? and a couple Slava watches from the early 80s. Russian watches, especially Amphibias, are uniquely rugged and easy to mod in a plethora of different colors and configurations. A couple of mine have commemorative Yuri Gagarin "cosmonaut" case backs that I really like.

Take aways, everything in the soviet union was a cheap knock-off. Poor quality, could only be sold in the Warsaw Pact countries. Feel sorry for the employees working as slaves.
