I nearly cheered when you said you don't have to sow in January. Having said that that I have some peppers that have germinated on heatmats and are now under growlights. The veg I'm going to push the boundaries with this winter and spring is Pak Choi. There are so many seeds in the pack that I can sow at the beginning of each month and see what happens.

Sounds like you're on a great start to the year Ken! Pak Choi is a fantastic choice, and it's awesome that you're experimenting with sowing at different times. We sow some each month and it works for us. Best of luck with your peppers and everything else!

absolutely agree with you, from my learning experiences the plants early in year really do catch up with each other! Theres no panic to sow in jan, just relax and enjoy it all. Another wonderful video thank you x enjoy those grow lights!

Grow lights allow you to grow things in January. I sow my tomatoes around 7th Janiuary and get ripe tomatoes end of June. Blight usually strikes later in the year, so If I get blight. I have already had a good crop. You want to avoid having too much warmth in January and February and early March as well as too cold. You want a slow but steady growth until March, then nature speeds things up. I have grown potatoes outdoors from February, but under some sach window frames that make a cloche. You can get a late frost and get caugjt out. However, you get new potatoes at the end of May. It's a gamble .

Great tips on timing and conditions for growing! It sounds like you have a solid strategy in place for a fruitful garden. We planted potatoes last year under the cover of our poly and were eating new potatoes by April which was amazing. We have been lucky in that blight hasn't affected our toms. Great tips - I usually don't sow anything in Janurary but I'm going to sow my onions this weekend. I like the idea of an earlier harvest so the ground is freed up for a second crop. I noticed you've gone for the Globo too.

I'm glad you found the tips helpful! Sowing onions in January is a fantastic way to get ahead in the season. We grew Globo for the first time last year and were so big we won our local fruit and garden show. I sow peppers in January and let them germinate on my underfloor heating. Then I put them on a south facing window sill in a box with aluminium foil around it to reflect the light. This works great for me. After hardening off once it warms up outside, I plant them out.

So far this is the coldest winter in a while. At least Dec and it's looking like most of Jan. Maybe Feb will warm up. Good luck with your grow lights. I've been using them almost 30 years since I don't have a green house and usually have good success. It's usually the fungus gnats that hatch in my basement from my soil mixes that cause me problems.

Same here Frank, this is our coldest winter for quite a few years and I'm loving it! Hopefully it will serve as a good pest control, the past few winters have been mild and we have seen bumble bees in December and January flying around, so hopefully the pests we don't want will be checked by the cold weather. I shall look to your advice on grow lights!

@@nodignorfolkgardener4575 I use a product called mosquito bite in a pot of boiling water to hydrate my potting mix and that seems to help destroy the eggs. I might get some sticky traps this year also.

That's great advice 👌. I'm in SE Ireland (could be zone 8 🤔). I usually start my onions and peppers in mid February, but planning to start them a couple of weeks earlier this year. I hadn't realised that onion seedlings are so hardy. I've been growing them for years and still learning, so thank you for that 😊. I start my tomatoes and everything else from March on. I have a heated propagator and grow lights, which are great. Best of luck with yours 😊.

Hi Susan, thank you for your kind comment! Onions seedlings can take some cold, but if you know you are getting a really hard frost just cover them with fleece or bring them down to the house. We see -6 usually as the worst most years, but do see the odd -10. By the time the seedlings go up to the Polly it will be February and by then we see much lighter frosts. Tomatoes for us will always be late Feb/ early March - thank you for watching and supporting our channel!

Hi Barry & Mrs W. I use heat mats and grow lights for January sowings of chillies, peppers, onions, lettuce and aubergines. I also start slow growing flowers such as lisianthus, geraniums and antirrhinums and some perennials needed for flowering in the current year. . The advantage to sowing now is that if germination is poor for any reason, there is still time to get a 2nd sowing in Feb/March. My grow lights on my shelving unit are rather basic and not great. I also got a new light from my hubster for Christmas. It is a spider farmer, adjustable hanging light. Gosh, what a difference between them, the SF is so powerful.- the light emitted from that and from my old ones. I have just put my potatoes to chit. Great info guys. Happy growing 🙂

Thanks for sharing your sowing strategy Be! The only reason I haven't sown any lettuce as yet is because we have plenty overwintering but thanks for putting that in the comments for others to read incase they need to sow. It sounds like you have a great setup with your spider farmer light. Do let us know how it helps you this year, I feel an upgrade coming on. Sounds as though you are well on are well on your way to a bountiful garden this year!

@@nodignorfolkgardener4575 I try to grow year round so we rarely buy very little. My hubster loves salad and he is currently enjoying baby spinach, Asian greens, lambs lettuce and american land cress, but that will be finished by Feb/march so I am sowing in January to ensure a crop to follow on. when the current salad leaves are finished- don't want a gap! One thing I need some advice on if you or anyone can help, is what can I do bout whitefly? They completely wrecked my kales last Summer and I really don't know how to prevent it. All my crops are covered with netting. Do you think it would help to use mesh this year? Cheers!

Sounds like you are doing a really great job at growing your own food all year round Be. As for the white fly, I do find that mesh is better but we do still see it. To really keep on top of it last year we used insecticide soap because like you we had a problem with the kale and we haven't seen it too much. Hopefully maybe others will come up with some other options!

It’s been so snowy here zone 8b, The snow on my poly froze and got so heavy when it became ice it’s torn the membrane seam on the roof. Argh I’ve ordered some repair tape need a few dry days to sort it out it’s too cold here with the poly broken for anything to grow so I’m going to hold off a little while yet. Fortunately I have B-road beans popping through and garlic which I planted in November. I’m a little further north than you so being patient. I have a few heat mats in the house and an old paraffin heater which I was given though yet to use, not sure about the fumes! I will follow your advice re onions, I am just finishing eating my harvested spuds I did some in my greenhouse for Christmas Maybe sow a tub next week in the greenhouse like you Chilli’s and sweet pepper next week too. I had some success last year with them. Hungarian hot wax and king of the north are my favourites

Patience is definitely key when growing in a colder climate than gardeners like ourselves, and those heat mats should help get things started indoors. Hi Barry and Mrs w just put the compost into the propagates ready for the chilli's got heat mats I bought some light off Ebay they were only 9.pounds each I got two over the moon with them it's heavy frozen for last few days well Barry and Mrs w bye for now stay safe

I need to get my peppers on the go, with your potatoes, Ive watched Steve from seaside kitchen, he uses medium size pots to start his potatoes up, so if U haven't got much room U can start them in smaller pots and then transfer to 30 litre pots

Took the decision not to grow onions anymore, they are cheap enough buy. What we will be doing is upping the shallots, now to me they are worth growing in abundance. Also it means there is more space for the other crops. Whether that be cabbage, beetroot...whatever! Hope you are both well!

Sounds like a solid plan! Shallots are definitely worth growing and can add so much flavour to dishes, and it's great that you're maximizing your space for other crops. We use so many onions and I will always take fresh, crisp onions from my garden every time. But every ones situation is different, we make lots of soups and stocks so use many onions and shallots, really appreciate you watching and following our channel and yes we are both very well, hope you are too - wishing you a bountiful harvest!

Barry ,question ,sowed some onions in a seed tray just after Christmas ,kept indoors and now are about an inch long ,can I put them out into my greenhouse now ?

Hi Barry, is it a cold greenhouse or can you provide some heat and inch is not that large. I don't sow ours until mid Jan so it is well into February when they go up to our cold greenhouse. Onions are usually ok at -5 to 6, so really it depends on how cold you will get where you live!

Well Essex is warmer usually than ourselves in Norfolk, however like you I would err on the side of caution. Like us I would put them out mid Feb!
