Americans Want You to Forget About This Race (Jeffrey Herlings vs. Eli Tomac)

In motocross, a debate has raged for over 50 years… You see, there are two ‘Holy Grail’ championships at the pinnacle of dirt bike racing; the European MXGP World Motocross Championship and the American AMA National Pro Motocross Championship. Each series has its own set of 40 professional riders that compete in a plethora of rounds across all sorts of terrain (dirt, sand, mud etc.) The problem is, these two sets of riders seldom ever get to compete against the other. So fans have long pondered which lot’s faster… Well, in 2017 the stars miraculously aligned and we got to see Europe’s top rider, Jeffrey Herlings go head-to-head with Eli Tomac and everything else America had to throw at him! As an American motocross rider, I can honestly say that I have nothing but the utmost respect for the European MXGP series. Motocross is big in the USA but unfortunately it's been surpassed by supercross. While I do enjoy supercross for what it is, there's no comparison the the brilliance that is out door motocross! I sometimes watch nascar on eurosport , just because the violence on track in the nascar series is like th3 best in the world no orher sport allows drivers the battle it out like they do in nascar wich is dangerous as hell but admireble ... the only thing that comes close in europe were cars make some good contact in gt3 racing but they still have more tules then nascar ... in nascar you still get away with some shit in gt3 and f1 there is more clean driving wich actually can make it a bit boring at times

I’m ashamed to call myself an American and have this incredible ride thrown asunder. What Herlings did was extraordinary. The way he put so many riders in shame, especially after his comeback in the 2nd race. That was a phenomenal ride, and the shame is everyone acted as if it had never happened. We just won the MXoN this year while Jeffrey Herlings was out due to injury - Tomac is faster than ever now and destroys the competition with his new team, engine package, and chassis/suspension set-up, however, Herlings spoke with Gypsy Tales about coming to race AMA in the future and I'm willing to bet that he'll either best everyone or just be a smidgen off! What makes him awesome too, is that he is VERY humble compared to almost 7 years ago, and wouldn't talk trash on any of the riders cause he knows they've progressed (especially for this past year while he was broken while Tomac was faster than ever), but still is so confident in his ability. I'm willing to wager that he shall win in the same fashion, and there is rumors of a Tomac VS. Herlings ONLY race that Gypsy started and they both have agreed to make it happen. :) RESPECT for the Flying Dutchman, and for all of the riders from the sandy Netherlands! Deep sugar sand makes a man out of you, and every rider from your country is a BEAST because of it - what I love about dirt biking is it is a sport that unites all people for the love of man, mind, and machine! The engineering of such machines are utterly amazing - just look at the JCR & SLR Honda teams that take and build a factory Honda CRF450X and BEAT million dollar trophy trucks in the Baja 1000! -It's incredible what these machines do!!!!

Your excellent writing and storytelling made every minute of this greatly enjoyable and informative. SPOILER: Eli competes in the US weekend obviously, the first day he beats all competition by over 28 seconds, Jeffrey seemed to have issues in the start and once again crawled his way up if I recall correctly. On the second day Eli was shocked at the pace set from the get go by all and wasn't at his fastest (possibly because he is used to only racing once a weekend). Jeffrey sets a blitz win overtaking on the last few laps due to his power of pressure!

Major Respect to Herlings and for sure Sowman! Having served as AMA Sports Manager for several year, there's so much to say on how I see our American "Pro" riders take so much for granted. This young man was simply grateful for an opportunity to compete against our best here in the states. What I see our riders complain about, he praised. It spoke volumes.

It was quite negative for them, American fans of all sports are very insular, they consider being the best in America equal to being the best in the world. A lot of fans as he said didn't know who the guy was or think he was capable of beating the best in America, Americans believe that about all sports. You have to remember despite it being a big country many Americans can be very parochial. In Europe all the top American road racers like Roberts, Schwantz, Rainey etc are held in very high regard, revered even. It's something that is rarely reciprocated in all the competitive events outside of a few where the top Americans have a similar level of respect. The saying "if you ain't American, you ain't shit" is very apt at times :)

yeah thats absolutely true. there are definetely fans like american fans in europe as well but i feel like its not as many. i feel like european fans mostly just are fans of the sport and if someone comes and is good at it they will love them. Especially people like schwantz, rainey, roberts etc. Im from germany and was born in 1994 and my dad literally gave me kevin as a second name because hes such a big kevin schwantz fan. He also always gets his bikes painted in the traditional kenny roberts design (yellow with the black stripes with white borders) :D but yeah its probably not true for all american fans i dont like to put all people into one pot but theres definietely a big tendency to what youre saying. I mean just look at basketball. Man, Herling seems like a really nice guy. All the provoking questions and he basically only gave in once, firmly standing on the "here for myself, not any rivalry" ground for the most of it. I was at that race. Obviously the anticipation of seeing Herlings race was quite the buzz. Sitting on the hill side and watching him reel in the leaders with surgical precision in every section was awe inspiring. Ironman is not a polite track and to be able to beat not only the competition but also the track was quite a statement.

Seeing those euro guys ride is something special. Here in the US we all try to imitate the likes of Chase Sexton or Jett Lawrence in our riding but we should really open our eyes to the styles of the Europe guys as well because there is something to be learned from their riding as well.

Competition spawns innovation. I've seen in other sports how American competitors who only practice and compete against other Americans get stumped by European competitors because they were missing out on so many things that gave the Europeans an edge. Besides of Football and some other Sports, you ain't able to live from it. The guys which compete in the marathon/sprinting stuff gettin' a thousand bucks as compensations from the State. Because we take the whole Olympic gist about "Amateurs" more serious. In the USA, y'all pump more money in it as marketing tool against Russia and China; which are also countries which ignore the "Amateur"-Rule on a daily base. That's the reason. Yet, Europe has 1,2 Billion People, the USA has 300 - Statistically we are just more likely to produce top athletes. Which you see in Football, most Motorsports and every other present sport. Just in case you’re wondering, that next race in Jacksonville was worth the hype. Tomac won the 1st race with Herlings finishing in 2nd. Herlings won the 2nd race with Tomac finishing 3rd, giving Herlings the overall title for the event.

I was there, i lived in Jacksonville for sometime taking my son to the track, we’ve lived between there and spain, and I can say with certainty, the European races are much tougher compared to America for the younger racers, but it eventually evens out. I have been a motocross mom in both America and Europe and there’s definitely a difference in competition and mindset. I notice Americans have more grit and endurance, i had a fellow motocross mom American who was also a military wife stationed in Spain at the time. She has similar views for differences, at least in younger riders. Her son started racing in Japan.

Superb documentary. Herlings actually got a royal knighthood in his home country. It is basically a recognition of his achievements and his role as an ambassador of sports for the Netherlands. MX is not a big sport in NL but we do recognise a TOP athlete if we see him (or her). Amazing talent. He is always extremely dedicated, focused, physically fit and well prepared.

We talk about it all the time and Everyone knew herlings was the fastest guy outdoors. The title is click bait. The author leaves out a lot about the differences in the sport between america and the mxgp series. The americans run two separate series, meanwhile the mxgp guys run purely outdoor motocross. In america The money sponsors and riders are concerned about is in supercross which is raced typically in stadiums. In the last four weeks of any given motocross season, riders and team actually start testing bike setups for supercross and spend less time practicing outdoors. Its also the end of the season and Tomac had the title clinched so there was no need to go for the win and keep up with herlings. This mentality is also one of the reasons why herlings has been injured repeatedly and will underachieve in his career when he is probably the most talented guy on the planet.

To put this into perspective, the only other time I can think of when a European motorsports legend showed up and cleaned house in an American series was when Sebastien Loeb _stomped_ the 2012 X Games Rallycross championship, besting the top US rally talent like Ken Block & Travis Pastrana. However, unlike Herlings who was on an entirely new bike, the Rallycross DS3 Citroen was very much the same car that Loeb had been running in the WRC; albeit with an engine beefed up to 600 HP instead of 300 and the lights & co-drivers seat removed.

I suspect that most people look at it that way. In the moment, I can see how some would get carried away with the whole Europe Vs NA aspect of it all. As a Brit, I would probably play in to that, but that's what Brits do. In my experience, it is something that is often misunderstood by our American friends. As a rower, everything made sense after the press conference. Coming from a team that specifically practiced in a rough water river, we were much better prepared for perfect conditions than teams that had it all the time. Worse track conditions always force technical skills that exploit better track conditions.

I always muddle it up in words, but when you race people who are slower you will win, but if you race people who are faster than you might not come first but you will have a new personal best. Another would be "no calm sea made a skilled sailor" which seems more appropriate to your comment.

Great video. I'm Dutch living abroad, still follow Dutch news once in a while. It's not a big sport in Netherlands but media still reports Herlings' wins/injuries etc. Don't think the gen pop really cares. Watching this makes me realise his achievements are very extraordinary. I remember watching this live, and wondering just who Jeffrey Herlings was, and how on earth a guy with a 3 digit plate was simply walking the entirety of the AMA field almost effortlessly. I won't speak for others, but ever since that day I've been hopeful that Jeffrey would take a legitimate full-season crack at the AMA Motocross series. Let's be honest: competition breeds progress and innovation. If there's a person out there who is simply faster than everyone else, they deserve a shot at winning it all. It doesn't matter who it is, where they hail from or how they got there. I want Jeffrey to take on America. And if he wipes the floor with his competitors, then good. We're better off that way anyways. Don't elt the sport get stagnant. Bring in wildcards to spice things up and keep everyone on their toes. As an example: 2022 MotoAmerica AMA RoadRacing series gave us an incredible fight between Jake Gagne, an AMA-bred racer and champion, and former MotoGP factory rider Danilo Petrucci, which ended up coming down to the last race.

I don't care about sports at all, and motocross racing has never crossed (pun intended) my mind previously. However this mini documentary is so well done I'm now invested. The pacing and overall quality of narration is superb. IMHO this is a great video for not only motocross fans, but for anyone.

I remember this race like it was yesterday. And I remember taking heavy flak at work amongst the moto guys for saying that we shouldn't be so quick to dismiss this Euro guy. I have always followed MXGP and I had an inkling that the days of American moto dominance was over. That race was the first of a few that, unfortunately, proved me correct. I love motocross and motocross racers, whether they be from Florida or Belgium, New Zealand or Russia, Cali or Sweden.

@@MegaBanne The difference is that other countries are very used to competing against other nations regularly, while Americans keep only competing against each other and pretending it's a competition of the best of the best, pretending other nations don't exist. And when reminded, they *still* pretend they don't exist.

@@Ebbagull That's not exactly true for every American sport. Sure, it's true for American football but baseball and basketball both have a Canadian team each. NHL has several Canadian teams and America does very well in the Olympics against all countries. Indy car is fairly diverse with plenty of Europeans, Australians and Latin Americans. Unfortunately there are no Americans in F1 but that might change soon with the increasing popularity of that sport. Motorcross just seems to have a strange nationalistic culture around it that doesn't really translate to every American sport.

This was epic! I remember when Nigel Mansell took lots of stick as well when he came across from F1 (champion) to IndyCar and won it in his first year! Only person to hold both titles at the same time.
