I was laughing so hard at your blooper opener, with Luther, and the longer it went on, the harder I laughed. I could hear the Jeopardy theme playing in your head 😆 I would love more breeds in the series, I find the whole thing fascinating, it’s definitely encouraged me to try multiple breeds, and that has made me a better spinner AND knitter. Whether it’s this series or the original, I’ll take it. I also like a tightly plied yarn, even if it’s not for socks (though I do make them less tight if it’s not for socks.) Determining how to spin dyed fiber to get different color effects is one of my favorite things to do. It’s like working a jigsaw puzzle! I got distracted by your gorgeous nails while you were comparing swatches….they’re so pretty! Color suggestion: greens are my absolute favorite, something inspired by a magical midsummer forest….

Thanks so much for doing this sock breed study, Trish. I haven't said anything yet, or done more than open my samples. But here is my plan: I'm testing for durability. I will be carding mohair into each roving, dying it a different color from each other and knitting one sock from each breed. I will then be able to wear them interchangeably and see how long it takes my heel to poke through. And I would love to try another couple of breeds! No pressure, holidays are busy times, but whenever you get around to it, you can count me in again!

I enjoy ALL of your breed studies, I learn SO much. I would love for you to continue doing breed studies for socks and other breeds... maybe even include other species and even plant fibers. It wouldn't bother me if you move between usage types of fibers based on what is available at the time and/or your mood (what you feel like trying next.) I bought the first breed study and I'm still working my way through those and I'm hoping to, eventually, do the sock breeds as well.

These sock studies are wonderful, very interested in the different breeds, how they hold up to average use. I will definitely jump on the band wagon again if you do another one. As far as a color, I've been experimenting with a deep purple, lime green, light blue then mist with black in a spray bottle, loving this journey, Thank you !!!

I just loooove Southdown! I've been experimenting with it lately as well. I wanted to find something that had good strength, minimal shrinkage and would hold up to the abuse my husband puts his hand knits through without the need for nylon or mohair. I love it for socks- squishy while still being amazingly strong. It even works great for a Chihuahua sweater that keeps our little weirdo warm in northern NH! I'm really enjoying the sockstravaganza episodes. I'm a complete nerd so I love data and comparisons and all that ridiculous stuff. :)

Love this experiment on wool breeds! I have spun up the first three breeds and have had a problem with the first half of the southdown breaking and drifting away while spinning. But I think it was due to the fact that I finally received my WooLee Winder for my Louet S90 (the bobbins are hard to come by apparently) and I felt like I was learning to spin all over again LOL. But on the second bobbin everything came together and I realized that I could spin thin and I really enjoyed spinning it up. Love how fluffy it was in the final product. I haven't had time to dye or knit the yarn up yet, but I am so happy that you did the testing for us all to see. Thank you so much for allowing us to experience more breeds. And yes, I am up for learning about more breeds whenever you want to fit them into your busy schedule. Michele

I would love to see more of these sock breed studies. Seeing how each wool is performing in the wash is fascinating. These have been so informative and helpful for figuring out which breeds I would like to try out for sturdy socks for my husband and I. I've only knit one pair of socks for my husband and they are his favorites, but he's very hard on his socks, so he's afraid to wear them often.

These fibers are so easy to spin, superior quality to some of the stuff out there. Thanks again.

I thought that I would mention that Southdowns are one of the breeds that the 4H kids like to raise in my area for stock shows. 4H also has categories for judging wool and mohair fleece quality. In Texas, we have county extension agents in each county, the work for the state agriculture department, but they work hand in hand with 4H and FFA. I could call my County Extension Office and possibly get information about buying wool from 4H (or FFA) kids once the competition is over. These shows usually have buyers (for livestock or wool, etc) that purchase from the kids when the show season is over, but most are willingbto sell to individuals, especially if you are willing to pay more that the buyers. It could be a good source for fleeces if you are willing to work with the kids, a d not all kids who are raising "fine wool" sheep use the wool for judging. In that case if you are willing to put up with second cuts, etc, you could get wool on the cheap.

I don't know why, but in a braid I think of petunias. Just noticed my washer is almost the same as yours but mine's a Kenmore LOL. Time will tell which is the better sock yarn, but seems the southdown wasn't fuzzy after the first wash. The Dorsets don't look any fuzzier after that first wash. I like all the colors but the fall looking one with rust is still my fave. I didn't get the last sock study, but that doesn't mean I wouldn't buy the next one, plus, at the moment, you still have some left and available for purchase so it's not too late "yet" lol. I do think doing some Suffolk in the next one is a great idea but I haven't a clue what else to add lol.
