This is a demonstration of how to replace an entire light, with the cord. Technique applies to pool light also, but water needs to be BELOW the niche in order to insert silicone.

Thank you, thank you, thank you Ladies. Pool dudes wanted to charge 400 bucks to do this. I understand about the aircraft sound, we live north of Nellis and close to the speedway, but I enjoy the sound (the sound of freedom). I updated our light to an LED to keep the power bill down. Again thank y'all very much.

I'm a pool contractor in Florida. I use Leakmaster Butyl Tape to seal the lighting conduit. It is so much easier to remove and you do not need to wait for it to dry.

Hi! Thank you for this video, I didn't know about the silicone, is there a certain type we should look for, and how long do you let it set?

I'm sorry for the delayed response. KZbin does not make it easy to respond using an iPhone. If you haven't gotten the answer yet, a good indoor/outdoor silicone is good. I like to let it set for 24 hours since it will be underwater constantly. Hope this helps.

I found your video very informative. I do have a question. My light fixture seems to have a ceramic material where the wire goes through to the chase. I think it might be an epoxy material. It looks like the fixture and fixture case were one piece when it was originally installed, as the seal material looks like a factory made seal. The light is 12v. Do you think that it is possible to splice a new fixture to a few feet of the old wire on the pool side and "pot" the connection with a waterproof material to eliminate pulling a new wire through the conduit?

+Denny Mela Absolutely NOT! Never should electricity in water be compromised. That's why I made this video. I have another video showing how to replace the burnt out bulb. But if you need to replace the fixture...replace the entire fixture. If you do it how you explained, and your GFCI happens to fail, that's a disaster waiting to happen. Again, this video is to demonstrate how to pull a new light. Please don't play with electricity and water in order to save a few bucks. A life isn't worth it. Thanks for watching and thank you for this important question, Lucy

Hello, I am not able to find your GFCI install for the pool light. Could you point me to it?

At 7:14 my right hand is pointing to the GFCI location. What you see is the back of it. The front is on the side. Hope this helps. Lucy

lucyspools I am referring to the GFCI video you mentioned on this video at 29:56 where you said you made a video on how to hook up the lights to the GFCI.

I got your second email but for some reason it didn't show up here. I'm browsing my videos but if by chance I don't find the specific GFCI install I could probably walk you through it. Are you adding an X10 switch or a regular light switch to the GFCI and light? My direct email is lucyspools@gmail.com. I can get back to you a lot sooner than through KZbin. Thanks. L

So, the only video I found which came close to installing a GFCI was when I installed an X10 switch. But I did find a pretty good explanation which should give you an idea. If you still need further assistance after viewing the video, email me and I'll walk you through it. kzbin.info/www/bejne/pH-qq396e9l5r8U I hope this helps. (I actually have a GFCI I need to replace. Now I'll video it). Lucy

Does the epoxy inside the niche always need to be replaced? What determines if it needs to be replaced. I also heard about using a rubber stopper instead. If using a rubber stopper is there a way to tell where to place it in the cord? It sounds like the pool would have to be drained below the niche. I've read it's not necessary to drain the pool so how is this seal done?

You will make yourself crazy if you continue to search for the 'best' way to do any repair on KZbin. I can say without a doubt that if you follow my instructions the job will be done correctly. 1) As to the "epoxy"...it is actually "silicone", and yes it always has to be replaced if you're pulling a light as is represented in this video. There is no way to pull the cord through the conduit with the old silicone still inside. 2) I have never heard of a "rubber stopper". How would you be able to plug the hole with the cord sticking out of the conduit? That's just nonsense. 3) It IS necessary to drain the pool below the niche in order to create a seal, with the silicone, if you intend to follow most city electrical codes. These codes are put in place to protect you from potential electrocution. Just as installing a GFCI to the light to avoid a potentially lethal situation. I am very adamant when it comes to safety. The reason I posted this video was because I realize folks are going to try to save money and do the install themselves. Though I included a disclaimer, because I can't control the actions of people, I am confident that if you follow my instructions you will be successful and safe. At a certain point you will just have to decide for yourself who's advice you will listen to. Don't always choose the easiest or laziest advice. Check credentials of the people who are offering the information. I hope this helps. Listen to your better judgment. L

The rubber stopper has a slit to slide the cables. It actually has two holes in it for the cable and bonding wire. There are so many opinions. Some people say no silicone or anything is required as the niche and conduit are supposed to be flooded. I don't even know how the niche in the pool looks or what the condition might be. So in order to do the silicone step the pool would have to be drained below the niche. Most sites say that draining is not necessary as it can be done from the deck. Going crazy is an understatement :). Thanks for the video.

Dear Lucy: Do you always have to push the old cord in and someone else pulls it out? Doesn't the cord come out easy by just pulling hard but not too hard and by greasing the wire to get it through the conduit? I am asking obviously because I wouldn't have anyone to help me and gotta get it done before family comes over to visit soon. Thanks.
@Lucyspools-diy-service-tips

Hope this gets to you in time for your family. The ease or difficulty depends on many things. It's not impossible to do this job on your own. Be sure all silicone is removed. Since you will be pulling from the panel you can squirt the goop (some use diluted liquid detergent). Place the light in the pool so you don't pull it into the pool and breaks, or tape the cord onto the deck. You'll have to keep going back and forth periodically to keep an eye on the length. Wishing you luck. Let me know how it goes. L

I don't understand why you took the time to splice all those wires together when you are not using those wires, you are just using it as a pull wire. Why not just wrap all the wires around each other as one, then do a good tape job over the whole bunch as you did in the end. Maybe I am missing something here.
@neverclearone
@neverclearone 7 жыл бұрын
I always wrap the final end wiring with electrical tape on top of the wire plug to keep any moisture out and keep any accidental loosening of contact (from any possible future work on other wiring.)
@neverclearone

I meant the wrap the wire nuts with electrical tape so the nuts and wire are one. Maybe over kill, just how I always do it.

If you've never had the wires pull apart or break inside the conduit, then you wouldn't understand. I'm merely demonstrating the best way to prevent that from occurring.

Don't be cheap on silicone
@Lucyspools-diy-service-tips
@Lucyspools-diy-service-tips 8 жыл бұрын
It's not a matter of being cheap. I'm merely looking out for the next person who may have to replace the light. I always put enough in the conduit, but I've been to many pools where it takes me an hour to dig silicone out because the person before me has used an excessive amount. Thank you for your comment though. I wouldn't want anyone to think it's ok to use too little silicone. Lucy
