One of the best OVA series and one of my most favorite anime of all time. I think most people would have a problem with the ending. While certainly it's pretty questionable, i personally liked it anyway. Plus, i think Dessler should have been dead many times through out the series but he keeps coming back. While the story is indeed pretty basic space opera type of story, i think the execution has been pretty powerful. The space battles especially with it's animation is a sight to behold. I also really fond for a lot of characters even though some of them are under developed and as you said, the grey portrayal of the show is also what makes it great. Plus, i really love the tone of the show. You pretty much have said most of my thoughts about the show. Best Yamato review so far and you just earned a new subscriber

This wasn't just "good"....this will be labeled a modern classic. Most things should not be remade...but the love and special care to detail with this remake and the RESPECT for the source material without taking a dump on everything that was before is amazing....too bad the company that made this...along with its equally amazing sequel has closed and thus we may never see it again.

Well as along time fan of the show . i started my journey with yamatto when i was a kid in the 80' and yes it was the Americanized version when the ship was called the Argo. But i fell in love with it. Now flash foward to the live action version of the show which I'm sad to say made me ill physically too much was changed too much was altered. But then I found it again on the FUNimation Channel and I will say this I fell in love again with the yamtto and its crew now After experiencing a wide variety anime I can honestly say this I find the updated version of space battleships Yamato far superior then the original both in style of anime character development in storyline while it honors the past and keeps a lot of the original it does update and make certain things better but the one criticism I have it the robot's name should have been kept iq9 was great for the series in the 70s and 80s and I think it would have worked better here but thats my only criticism

I'm glad someone reviewed this. It's very underrated and was sadly overshadowed by AoT, which came out in the same year. I will say that the CGI didn't always please me though. I felt it stuck out a bit at times and took me out of the moment. I'd also say some characters were a bit wastes. Especially some female ones. It's still a very good show though and deserves more recognition.

I'm not that much into anime, but I am so happy that I found this series. First I thought it would be kind of odd, seeing a space ship, that looks like a WWII Battleship. But the story and characters with that awesome soundtrack and thrilling action let you totally forget about that. This was a mindblowing experience for me to watch. Even made me cry at times, despite me not understanding a single word Japanese. Highly recommended.

Yamato 2199 is a remake of the seminal 1977 TV series, the plot is almost identical to the original, but 2199 expands to plot, developing and expanding the characters, widening the story arc, humanizing many more characters including the enemy, and in general doing a great kick ass job in the offering. I got mine via Ebay from a Malasian DVD distributor, the DVD is from the Bluray so there is a slight loss of visual quality, in Japanese with good english subtitles, but its still way WAY worth it. GET IT!

Hit and miss, Toward the Terra got an excellent tv series adaptation from an old movie,and Brotherhood definitely was worthwhile. The berserk movies turned out really well. While I want to say the Eva rebuilds aren't as good I'd be lying if I wasn't super hyped to see 4.0 regardless of quality. Gankutsuou is an excellent remake as well. The only remake that has let me down is fate stay night, better visuals, boring pacing, same general story, and Gundam Seed if you consider it a retelling of original gundam. The UC universe has way more merit.

You know what I don't get? In the first ship battle they were all lined up and basically were not moving. Yet we can see from latter episodes that both side's ship can move in reasonably fast rates. Instead of using tactics of fire, then move, then fire again. They used the stupid line strategy in early days of war! It's 2199 people. Other than that, the music is beautiful, the animation was good, the battles exotic, the losses tragic, and most of all.... that dam opening I just can't get out of my head!
@TheMarineGamerIGGHQ
@TheMarineGamerIGGHQ 7 жыл бұрын
wouldnt make much of a difference. It was typical like real life ship battleship battling. If both are moving at the same speed it wouldnt make much of a difference. The reason why you see speed working well with the Yamato later on is because she usualy has the element of surprise

The role of the battle of pluto was to buy time for the Wave Motion Core to land at mars (or crash land in this case). This is why Okita takes his time in fighting the Gamilas. He isn't there to defeat them. Once the core had been retrieved, the fleet (or what remained) turned to return to Mars. In this case it was only the Kirishima that could return. Also, Okita was leading a fleet formation, you can see later on when its just his Kirishima left, he uses quite a bit of erratic maneuvers throughout.
@jasonknight1085

Oddly enough your post describes almost every war when a new technology is introduced. See massed infantry charges against machine guns in the first world war, or the removal/omission of the internal gun on fighters because "Missiles solve everything" of the Vietnam era.... or the complete lack of flying mutual support or even basic ACM in the early years of 'Nam.
@Shadow-pq3hh
@Shadow-pq3hh 5 жыл бұрын
Although all this wasn't a new technology. The fleet that engaged at the battle of Pluto composed of Isokaze Class Destroyers, Murasame Class Cruisers and lead by the Kirishima, a Kongo-Class Battleship. All three used the low energy positron cannons typical of the UNCN of the time. Both the Murasame Class and the Kirishima had spinal shock cannons, that were used to great effect during the Second Battle of Mars (which is why the Gamilas resorted to asteroid bombing, their fleet was decimated by long range shock cannon fire). I have no clue why the UNCN didn't approach head-on in a line with ships abreast, where the cruisers and Kirishima could've fired a shock cannon barrage (which we see able to shear through Gamilas cruisers and are able to very quickly dispatch battleships). Instead, the Kirishima leads the battle group in a battle-line parallel to the Gamilas one, of times long past, to then engage with broadsides of their terribly underwhelming positron guns. WHAT WERE YOU THINKING OKITA? Another stupid fact is that Okita and Mamoru Kodai were intended to serve on board the Yamato as captain and tactical officer respectively. So why on Earth was Okita leading the formation and Kodai assigned to the Yukikaze during this battle?
@jasonknight1085
@jasonknight1085 5 жыл бұрын
@@Shadow-pq3hh Information that all comes from outside the "canon" of the original show -- so much like SW's extended universe the ships magically have hardware we never saw anywhere in the show / movie -- like in SW destroyers magically having thousands of "turbolasers" that we never once see being fired. I mean... destroyer, two to four big guns and dozen or so point defense, maybe some missiles/torpedos... but no, it's a "star destroyer" so it has to be as OP as a bloody death star. Yamato is the same way, whats in the "extended" canon doesn't line up at all with the original series. In the original show we have a decimated military making its last stand, pushing an admiral who CLEARLY is well past the prime of leading a fighting force likely pulled off his cushy desk job to lead the fight. Means we're likely looking at green draftees in most positions, even (and especially) the officer corps. NOWHERE are we told in the shows themselves that Mamoru was supposed to be the XO of the Yamato. That was written after and as such clearly doesn't line up with the intent of the original storyline. That's a continuity error common to prequels and post-novels. Again, just look at the batshit in Star Wars and Star Trek fiction for proof of that -- or worse, RPG stat books. (Where it often feels like the writers missed the point and/or are completely unfamiliar with the source material) ... and "new' technology doesn't mean bleeding edge. Machine guns existed for a decade before WWI even started, and yet even by the end of the war there were STILL generals who ordered their men "over the top" out of the trenches in massed charges against them. It took another entire war before that s*** got fixed. Or the USN not even loading ammo into the cannon on the Cruds to save weight leaving them nearly defenseless against MiG-17's when their job was bomber escort, a common practice as the distances traveled increased. (as the USN pathetically tried to keep the Intruder relevant and in the game when they should have just let Thud and Phantom do the job). Hardware in war is typically "new" for a generation, and those at the top are slow to adopt to the tactics -- or worse, oversell the new technology discarding proven tactics and equipment. The earth forces being a disorganized mess fit the story of it being a last stand. Last stands are ugly, messy, and rarely staffed by experienced soldiers... Because at that point they're all dead. Just look at the final days of WWII in Europe. Anyone with actual experience of value was either purged by a paranoid leadership, or dead. As such Okita never struck me as some great legendary leader; he struck me as an old man out of touch with the times, pressed into service because there was nobody else available. This plays well with his being in charge of an "Ark" type program (though that too is post-story bs) where military and strategic acumen would NOT be significant requirements. In peacetime or any properly executed war, he was clearly a REMF. Though that plays to your argument -- why the tactical ineptitude? He was an aging rear-echelon mother-f***er who was pressed into service because the pool of qualified candidates had been depleted.
