I saw this as a 'Cartoon' while growing up shocked to see a live action version of it, I am well not happy that over the years it was never seen in America , or promoted . It's looks darn good for sure ,excellent !

The original IJN Yamato was lost in vain. She was ordered to conduct a suicide attack mission in Okinawa without any aerial support and sunk en route to it. This Yamato reached the final destination - home and self-destruct, protecting the earth. Then her mission was completed finally.

Yes and no. The official plan for Operation Ten-Ichi-Go was to move the Yamato to a strategic position near one of the remaining Japanese bases, and beach her to use as a battery platform: that way she could not be sunk, and retrieved postwar. The Americans just happened to find, intercept and sink her with a concentrated assault in order to prevent the Yamato from becoming an even worse pain in their asses later.

@@TheEmeraldMenOfficial IJN General Staff "Gunreibu" ordered Musashi, another Yamato class battle ship to attack US ground force in Leyte by landing Layte Bay. Musashi was also sunk, without airial support and failed to reach the destinatiom. After the loss of Mid Way, IJN tactics became reckless. Literally two Ysmato class battleships were lost due to the idential sure-failure missions.

I read that Japanese anti-aircraft defenses on IJN ships were sub-par. Both in terms of the actual guns and tactics used when being attacked by enemy aircraft. This is one of the main reasons Japanese ships went down so easily.

Si bien la película no fue igual a la serie ,era de esperarse no se puede condensar todo un universo animado en una película de dos horas, además si algunos no lo sabían la primera película de anime del Yamato va casi parecido a esta película el Yamato salva a la tierra pero toda la tripulación muere,eso género en los japoneses reclamos y se hizo más temporadas y esa película que menciono se considero como una historia alternativa.

Okay, as much as I liked this take on the Yamato tale (heavily "inspired" by the 2000s reboot of "Battlestar Galactica" as it was...🙄), The CG on it is very weak. The exploding effects had zero momentum on impact, making said blasts look as though Yamato was standing still. Really, they look as if they were pasting in regular explosions onto It while the blast effects were station keeping on Yamato's outer hull. In other words, the explosions were tracking on her hull rather than the hull moving through the blasts.

BTW, while I'm being bitchy w/the main ship sequences, their use as "virtual" set designs were very sophisticated in its original cinema run & still has lessons to teach today's filmmakers on that elusive type of effect...🙃

Skip this blasphemous hash of a film and watch the 2012 anime. Aside from the ship design , which was very well done( I may have even shed a happy tear at the first operation of the Wave Motion Gun), the direction of this film seems to have been primarily aimed towards killing the "Yamato" franchise and stirring radioactive cobalt into the grave so no one would go near it ever again.

+aerohard I lost track of how many sequels were spawned by the original anime. Many in Japan. But I seem to recall that the ship is rebuilt and updated in a later plot line (Resurrection.) I'm pretty sure they could squeeze another movie or two out of the franchise if there is interest.
