The original anime notes that the sb yamato is actually the wwii ship just fixed and modified that's why it's referenced so much

One slight correction: Aside from the reimagining of the alien threat (and the fact that Yuki was one of the fatalities), the ending is almost an exact live-action adaptation of "Arrivederci, Yamato," the 1978 Japanese theatrical-film sequel to 1977's "Space Battleship Yamato." (In fact the 2010 film is basically the 1977 anime movie with the 1978 sequel's dramatic major-character deaths and ending, with only a couple of tweaks.) The spirits of fallen comrades appearing, the "aiming" of the blocked Wave Motion Gun, the flash-in-the-distance abrupt ending--all come straight from the anime version. "Arrivederci" has attained cult status, which is wild because initial fan reaction was, as you can well imagine, UNBRIDLED FURY until the extended TV series version gave them a somewhat happier ending and the means to continue the franchise. "Final Yamato" came years later, rehashing the ending one more time with the original captain (revived from secret-for-some-reason cryogenic stasis) sacrificing himself. That's right, 1978--one year after "Star Wars" and two years before "Empire." Which means that Lucas swiped "Force ghosts" from "Yamato," not the other way around.

Wow, I really didn't expect a review of this from you guys. Btw, the eps from the original show that was completely about the one minute communication with the crew's family before they left the galaxy was the first eps of Starblazers I happened to see, and it was such a well done and well-written show it made me literally a fan of anime and space opera for life. As a young kid raised on American cartoons, I'd never seen a show like that before; no space battles, or villains , just people saying goodbye for what might be the last time, and I was riveted.

Hello, interesting review being you were new to this at the time you had first seen it. I will be revealing spoilers for two key original stories as well as this movie. So to explain as best as I can, the first half of the movie was a retelling of the original 1974 26 episode season of "The Quest For Iscandar" in which they clarify it IS the original sunken WWII Battleship Yamato refit for space travel. Okita (known as Captain Avatar in the "Star Blazers" American dub) does get ill and passes away in the final episide of the original season. The villians of the original season are the Gamillas, and the quest is for a radiation removal device , the story that remains throughout this film. However the second half of the movie once they invade the planet is a shot-for-shot remake of the story beats from "Farewell Space Battleship Yamato In The Name Of Love." This at the time was the sequel to the original season but in a feature film. It also appears to be the most beloved Yamato film for Japan, which is why the ending was adapted instead of leaving the film open for sequels. The villians were the Comet Empire. So the 2nd half of the 2010 film trades the Comet Empire villians and ships for the Gamillas. Film shots of Kodai getting fired on only for him to brake and take the enemy from behind came out of the Comet Empire animated film. So were the following shots: missiles nearly hitting the transport before Yamamoto flies his fighter to take the hit, as well as his gaze back to his fellow fighters before his crash; Saito standing his ground before taking the fatal hits that again depict his fall backwards in slow motion; Sanada (wounded in the film but merely trapped in the anime) giving the enemy a sly smile before pressing the button to set off the charges; Takugowa's death in the engine room; Shima flying the transport in front of the bridge to honor Kodai, first showing a closeup of Shima, then a shot of the crew saluting Kodai; and finally Kodai remembering the fallen before sacrificing his ship to save the transport as well as the Earth. The obvious key difference is the anime ending was against the Comet Empire while the film truncated it to eliminate the Gamillas. The main difference is Yuki, who was a nurse and not a fighter, was also killed in the anime movie, and she was the last fallen ghost to join Kodai beside him on the bridge. Kodai says to her memory that this moment is their wedding day, and as long as the Earth lives they will both live as husband and wife in everything that lives and thrives on planet Earth. A sentiment that carried into the film when Yuki did not want to leave without Kodai, but he assured her he lives on with her as long as the Green Earth is restored. The Comet Empire storyline was retooled as another season of 26 episodes, but the finale was much different as the ship and crew survived to continue the show. However it seems the original animated movie was the most beloved among its Japanese fans with its story of one last hope and sacrifice, that the producers chose to depict that original ending to the film. Thank you for this review. After so many "Rise Of Skywalker" rant videos, I ran a search for video reviews of this film and yours was the only one to pop up. I saw reruns of "Star Blazers" in the early 80's. I will admit I did not see the animated theatrical feature until a year of after seeing the 2010 film, so it was head scratcher for why they ended it without an opening for sequels. It was when I saw that original Comet Empire feature that I recognized several of the same shots in its second half, and why they decided on that original ending. I very much enjoyed the film, in fact it is my favorite Blu-ray that I had to special order from Hong Kong, in the original language with English subtitles, long before an English spoken dub was available in the U.S. In the original series Yuki was the only woman on the ship in her role as nurse. I certainly enjoyed her role change to a pilot, and had absolutely no gripe for the remaining gender swaps in the movie. I thought the idea that Okita did not have a solid plan and embarked blindly, while not original to us BSG fans, still was a different enough take to update the story while keeping the familiar beats as well. If I have only one gripe, I wish Desla was more of a villian on screen as he should have been the main focal point for the crew to rally against. Finally the music, OMG the MUSIC! The orchestral arrangements of the old familiar themes, especially when Yamato literally broke ground, was the final ingredient that made this 2010 movie such a nostalgic and satisfying experience for me. So to close here, your review was interesting because you were new to the Yamato phenominon. I certainly hope that since you were introduced to this you were able to track down the other anime, and especially FSBYITNOL. I just really feel like that film offers a better understanding to the direction presented in the movie, and ending it not on a typical Hollywood ending to make more sequels, but on a sentiment that was purely Japanese.

I loved this movie. I loved star blazers as a kid and didn’t know anything about this movie until 2019 when I stumbled across it on KZbin. I was absolutely blown away. You have to compare it to other Japanese cgi sci-fi movies because they just don’t have the budget to compete with American films. In that light this movie was very well made. After the major disappointment with Disney Star Wars I really needed a good sci-fi movie with a great story and this one was perfect!

I would highly recommend watching 2199 it takes what the original was and overall makes it better plus everyone is way more interesting and the Jorney to Iscandar is a more satisfying journey. Plus the universe gets a lot more attention with world.building. Plus it shows the Gamilas as more then cheap villains they get more depth and it is overall greatly paced at 25 episodes.

Sunk by Subs..... sounds like Shinano to me..... Yamato and sister ship Musashi was Sunk by US aircraft and these two ships were taking 2 hours each to take down.... Musashi was sunk in the Battle of Lete (if is a wrong spelling sorry) And Yamato sunk in Operation Tengou... Yamato eats a lots of torpedoes and bombs which take 2 hours to sunk this ship... also Yamato sunk a ship it was a Fletcher class Destroyer by 460mm (18 inch shell) stroke on the ship which make shell over penetrates the destroyer which make that DD unuseable... also Yamato create a serious Damage to US Light Aircraft carrier.... Thats why Us are trying their hardest to sunk this ship class because of the gun power it have which may cause very serious damage on their best battleships Iowa Class battleship and their carriers fleet...

Wow, had no idea how influential this is! Wait... after jumping they have to way 20 minutes before jumping again? Wasn't something like that on the first BSG episode, too? Also the whole deal with "the entire fleet is wipped out, so we are up to this last whatever we could find" and the last militar officer are the ones who just happened to be somewhere else when the big battle happened and killed every branch of the army, right? Am I remembering it correctly?

I liked this movie, but wasn't wild about how they fundamentally changed the Gamillas and Iscandar. Maybe it would have been ok if the Gamillas weren't such crap CGI. The doctor with the sake and the cat is very much like the original one. Enjoyable, but meh. 2199 anime though was awesome. Oh, and yes, SUPER melodramatic. Hell, if you want drama, watch the third and fourth seasons (2202) of those. It goes way into Japanese melodrama.

I watched this way back in 2010 when was released on dvd and again last night. Is it a good film ? My opinion is that it was enjoyable to watch , i watched star blazers as a kid so the plot was slightly changed but still able to follow. Designs of costumes and ships etc were cool, but.....would of been better if had english dubbing, subtitles get tiring after a while. Running time was ok , maybe 3 hrs would have fleshed out a bit more plot as in parts it felt rushed. All up its good for a watch . I give it 7 /10

No not Hunger Games but an actual US version of Battle Royale...after a bit of searching here's what I found on Wikipedia when searching battle royale us remake In March 2012, Roy Lee reported that a remake of Battle Royale would no longer be possible due to the release of The Hunger Games, stating, "Audiences would see it as just a copy of Games - most of them wouldn't know that 'Battle Royale' came first. It's unfair, but that's reality." So yeah I guess there was going to be a hard R remake of the film but with an American slant...sadly instead we got blurry footage the movie: camera shake edition...the second Hunger game film had much better action scenes but I didn't have much interest in the story...I haven't even seen the third. Now is the third split up into two parts like all teen/young adult book to movie adaptations? I know that the 3rd Hunger Games had a desert area...just like Maze Runner...I'm going to stop now before I go on a tangent about how shallow and uninspired most movie adaptations are of teen/young adult books. When I right a book and if it gets a movie deal I'm pushing for an R rating and a ban on shaky cam.

The actual Yamato (and all but three of her escorts) was sunk by US Navy aircraft for the loss of only 10 of their number, it's considered one of the most one-sided victories in military history and the final nail in the coffin for battleships against aircraft carriers. But some of her crew were rescued by the surviving destroyers.

LOVED the animated series/movies this film was based on ..but for hard core fans this was a reboot ala BSG 2000's ..THE biggest change being complete change up of the Gamalias (or Gamalons from the tv series) .who were human like but with blue skin ...also the main villain Desslar (Desslock) who is maybe THE most popular character in the series...messing with that character would be messing with Darth Vader in Star Wars and changing him into a jellyfish creature that talks ..movie was a big let down for me,,..stick the anime ...same goes for the 19 70's iconic Gatchaman series ...also known as Battle Of The Planets or G Force in North America.

The Space Battleship Yamato actually is, in theory, the actual World War II battleship Yamato secretly rebuilt as a space ship. Also, the real Yamato was sunk US carrier planes, not by a submarine.
