Max power with speed limited with small 1x1 suspension wheels. Invert wheels so that the top of the wheel touch the pillar.. jump action will squeeze pillars making a braking in emergency.. this way you can set up an control max and min offset

can you use the elevator to launch space ships, like a railgun?

Wheels are counted as separate grids, so when you copy and paste the wheels can sometimes be converted to a station. I ran into this problem when using a mod that allowed small grids to become stationary grids where when i added a wheel the wheel would be created as a static grid. This caused my space tractor to get stuck in the air.

I’ve had the same thing happen by merge blocking onto wrecks, one was even slightly in gravity and it wasn’t falling so o turned it into a base lol

If you go the thruster route, you could use the wheel suspensions against the central pillar but turn off steering, propulsion and take the friction down to 0%. I just built a thruster propelled train car that has the sides of the wheel suspensions pointing down into some beam blocks so the wheel slides inside the groove of the beam and the wheel suspension pushes on the side of the groove to keep the car straight. I ended up adding some suspensions to the bottom of the beam to keep the car from bouncing up out of the beam. My friend started using this idea to create an elevator and your video gave me an idea about how to fix the problems he's been running into. A platform won't move horizontally but it can tip and by making it a cube there would be less chance of tipping especially with us using four pillars instead of just one.

What about spin wheel, ejecting stuff to space like that, would it work in Space Engineers?

I havnt seen the video yet but I’m up the 2 layers of 3x3 wheels it looks like, 18 mins in, you could try vertically offset the wheels so that there’s only one wheel on each block at a time instead of the 2-4 which might be “crushing” the block Aand you could possibly put suspension wheels on rotors or hinges to change or gain offset

Well a space lift in SE is impossible because the pillar's hight is limited to 20 km. For reaching the 0.0 gravity we need here an hight over 40km.

What about the gear mod? Would that work?

i feel like we need to have a perfectly balanced center of mass, so its better to use a design that use 4 or more pillars with everything centered. I think it should lead to less pillar damage. the pillars themselves also have to be perfectly aligned with the gravity well so the center-most block of the base should be aligned with gravity and everything else must match that block's axis. should also look into blast door blocks as they dont have physics voxel deformation so even when they're damaged their physics is similar. and just have some welders with reserve steel plates on the lift.
