The first next gen German aircraft carrier, built as a response to the USS Theodore Roosevelt and the leap in carrier and aviation technology of the 1950s. Laid down in 1956 she would see massive delays as she underwent design change after design change, not being launched until 1960 and taking a further 3 years to fully enter service.
She would serve fruitfully with the Kaiserliche Marine, serving in the quelling of rebellion in Vietnam, Gabon, and later the Arabian gulf wars of the 1980s. She would leave service defacto in 2003 being placed in reserve, she would later be decommissioned in 2008 becoming a museum ship in the port of Danzig.
At 327.5-meter-long, with a beam of 43 meters, maximum speed of 33.5 knots and a crew of 6,000 she was one of the largest ships ever constructed for the Kaiserliche Marine, displacing upwards of 85,000 tons by the time she was decommissioned.
