The adlib version of this song should have been the startup theme for the Nokia brick phones

It's amazing how much talent musicians had back in the days... Even the cartoons had awesome intro's. Miss the good old days.

This basically sums up the '80s synthesizer battle between Roland and Yamaha. After Roland had dominated the analog synthesizer market in the early '80s, Yamaha came along with the DX7 synthesizer in the mid-80s, with its digital FM synthesis dominating the synthesizer market and destroying Roland's analog synthesizers. Yamaha then created FM synth sound chips for the arcade, console and computer markets. And then in the late '80s, Roland came back with the superior D-50 synthesizer, which used Linear Arithmetic synthesis (LA synth), a new type of synthesis combining digital and analog synthesis. Roland then created superior LA synth sound modules for the computer market.

Moog and ARP dominated the analog synth market in the 70s/early 1980s.

Definitely prefer the gritty Adlib sound over the Roland even though audibly the Roland sounds much better. It's the rawness, I think. Reminds me of this excellent bygone era.

I remember downloading a utility from a Space Quest Fan Site, that enabled the Soundblaster to play the MT-32 music files, it was pretty awesome.

I remember having both on my computer. The second one definitely had a softer sound and was a little bit more pleasing to the ears. More than anything, I love them both and the music of the game period.

I grew up with the adlib version for this game. Will always be better😂

And at first when the AdLib started for me, I thought my PC had crashed because I'm getting frequent bluescreens and the sound buzzes like that when that happens.

I got to know this game on a 1991 80386 SX 25Mhz with a _pc speaker_. Later when I had a 80586 133Mhz with a huge Sound Blaster 16 I got used to Adlib midi music which I still prefer in Dosbox.

the mt-32 version was damn rockin.

It could just be my nostalgia goggles (or headphones), but I think the Adlib just meshes so well with the visual theme of the game despite being technically inferior to the Roland.

this is by far my most favourite game music of all time, with the Dearly beloved song from Kingdom Hearts 2 for the PS2 right besides it.

Vet du om man MÅ ha Roland MT-32, eller lar det seg gjøre med en hvilken som helst Roland Keyboard også?

This is true from my experience which is odd seeing as the original Adlib and Soundblaster used the same FM syn chip (Yamaha's OPL2).

I feel like the MT-32 is to quiet, and lacks the punch 👊 the Adlib and SoundBlaster had 😏.
@laffer3513 жыл бұрын
@generalzod4life Soundblaster 16 won't help you in any of these games, you'll still get adlib music.

Why does the Adlib always have a bunch of clipping in this song?

Sounds like too high operator 1 levels on some of the instruments making them very sharp and distorted.

Too bad I don't have an MT-32. How does a device like that work, by the way? I just have a CTK-4000 keyboard.

Machiner6 it's an external midi device that a special card from Roland to add midi in and out to your pc, but if you want on a modern computer with games running in DOS box you can get a USB to midi adapter and plug the MP3 doing to that and then changed DOSboxs options from core audio to core midi

Are you actually using an AdLib card, or is this yet another of the places that is actually using a rubbish soundblaster emulator? It's strange how many places do this, as you need only listen to the differences between soundblasters to know that an AdLib sounds different to a soundblaster. Anyone who claims they sound the same - what do you mean by that? Which soundblaster does an AdLib sound like?
@bitchlasagna47206 жыл бұрын
they absolutely do not sound different they use the same synth chip to produce sound the only difference is the soundblaster uses another chip for sfx

It technically is one (the YM3812 chip) but it also could've sounded better. Check out MegaRace and Wacky Wheels for example.

Here's the thing, Adlib and Roland are basically the same thing. "Synthesized" "Instrumental" "Sounds." The result can only depend on the individual song itself and what one does with those instruments. So in that case Adlib fits Space Quest's more weighty and jarring sounds. Where it doesn't work as well is something like Monkey Island, where MT-32 instruments are a better fit. It goes on like that in numerous cases. And in this case, the visuals.. well they just don't match with the sophistication of the MT-32's nearly real sounding instrumental music. Something Monkey Island got closer too.
