My support fleet will definitely include one of these beasties. I feel that many people are missing just how important this ship will be as the game matures. Org's that don't own one or refuse to contract one for support will be severely limited in how and where they can deploy their fleets. CIG have stated that many upcoming star systems will dwarf Stanton and that fuel economy/ jump efficiency will see major changes. I foresee the Starfarer being given the ability to refuel ships while underway and squadrons of them (with escorts) providing critical support to large fleets operating in remote areas.

Not only is it expensive and kind of pointless right now, it seems a lot more unfinished than many other ship. The door from the rear walkway doesn't lock making it the easiest ship to stow away on. The elevators from the walkway to the 3rd deck don't work from outside. The crew mess has no table in the big open space where you'd expect one. The captains desk has no chair. The bathroom doors don't work in the crew quarters. Granted, this is all minor stuff that doesn't affect gameplay, but it shows a lack of attention to detail. Compared to ships like the Caterpillar, Freelancers, Constellations, Hammerhead and such it just comes off as a sloppy job.
@Farrister4 жыл бұрын
I couldn't agree more! Which is a shame, it was one of the first big ships and I remember seeing it for the first time and the sense of scale it gave.
@Areanyusernamesleft4 жыл бұрын
You have to remember that the Starfarers were at one point the largest ships implemented in the game (they are 90 m long and as I recall the first ship over ~60 m long) and the Starfarers haven't had any sort of rework since then (on the other hand there have been ships like Cutlass have had substantial reworks after they were first implemented). Also, CIG's designers have improved significantly since then. So in effect most of the things you mentioned (especially the interior issues) are just showing design's age compared to newer and reworked ships. Edit: I of course think that the Starfarers should at least have an update to their interiors sometime in the near or medium term. I was just giving context to why the overall design quality is different from most of the later ships.
@o-wolf2 жыл бұрын
I can pick out a bout a dozen more design inconsistencies &airlock hazards (if they ever decide to take immersion physics seriously as they promised) But the fundamental flaw that will keep tripping them up is a lack of true vision or any kind preparation or future proofing.. for instance the Starfarer be best served being ALOT bigger than it is.. ALL the ships should.. I'd say the misc freelancer should be as big as the Starfarer with the Starfarer being the same order of magnitude larger than it currently is If SC is going to have some kind of sensible economy If "iMmErSiOn" is something they really care about as opposed to something they throw around to sound cool.. they'll need to genuinely future proof their in universe infrastructure &make these hauler like ships truly gargantuan as they would be if we had this tech irl This will mean devs with more than two braincells to rub together &know that most things will need to automated &crew quarters will need to take up or be situated in less than 5-10% of the ships with the bulk of its space going towards storage Develop a way to automate loading &unloading cargo either through automated space station/space port infrastructure or some form of shipborne robotic system that doesn't require u to PHYSICALLY unload each box one at a time by hand or that useless tractor beam emitter Things like this take common sense vision &most of all planning.. something I'm not sure these guys are capable of because for the last 10(14) yrs they've habitually shown us otherwise

Also for a simple fix add red lights to the ship while in flights and cockpit lights like airplane they shut the lights off and all you see is the console lights while in flight and the rest of the ship has red lights that’s what we use on the ships in the navy at night it helps hide our presence at night from being spotted by eye plus with space being so dark the red lights would work so much better but have a light switch in the bridge to control all the lights and lock them so you can still change the lights in other parts of the ship as long as the bridge slows it
@Farrister3 жыл бұрын
We used to have to use red light too!

I think you're right about the ship overall right now, but think that's the crux of the argument: Right now. Irl naval battlegroups tend to have 1 or 2 tankers for a good reason that accompany their carrier + cruiser + 2-3 destroyer fleets. Traveling in space once the game goes live, especially in more remote thoroughfares, the last thing you're going to want in your Colonial (Org) Fleet is to run out of fuel. Ships that can carry a lot of it, collect and/or refine more of it, and are efficient in traveling on what fuel they have, are going to be important for mid to large sized organizations. The Starfarer variants will be essential for any fleet that consists of ships larger than a Polaris, and probably for any fleet with ships larger than a Constellation. Certainly for any Org setting up a planetary, asteroid, moon, etc outpost, they will need ships to collect and/or refine fuel and move fuel there, at least until they can source local fuel. Even then, the Starfarer will be capable of serving as a local refinery alongside the base's refining functionality. This is in addition to its cargo hold, and its potential to refuel ships in flight, which would be invaluable for fleets that have no home and simply roam from place to place. Additional cargo for supplies and even the ability to store vehicles and small ships is never a bad thing. Yeah, it's not a combat ship, but not EVERY ship in the game is a combat ship. An army marches on its stomach, and this is also true of outposts and colonies. Even if they remove the fuel collection functionality, the refining and transport alone is significant. And at $350, this ship is the cheapest (EFFECTIVELY) capital/fleet ship you can get your hands on. If you're looking for a ship you can do things in the 'Verse now that will also be useful to your Org in the future, this ship is probably it. Even if the access "Jeffery's Tubes" give one the heeby-geebies. It's got room to store you and a friend or two's small ships inside, you can all have beds, and it actually has considerable room to walk around in. Contrast that with a Freelancer (which I love, but it's essentially a long hallway) or a Constellation (which is a slightly wider long hallway) and it's clearly got a lot more room for the crew. Finally: Remember that this was probably the first "capital" ship added to the game. That means it's probably pretty likely to get a rework at SOME point...which may see its size increase and its functionality improved. When THAT happens, the price will probably jump accordingly, but anyone grandfathered in will be along for the ride. Even if they don't ever make many changes to the interior, we know the functionality will eventually be far more useful, and if the rest of your assets are vehicles and/or small ships that will fit aboard, this gem might become even more useful for moving your own fleet between systems. Racers, in particular, might end up loving it if it gets modified to allow the Razor/M50/etc to fit inside. All in all, there are worse ships for the price, and this ship can't really get any WORSE, and is likely to get BETTER, as the game ages. So that's a point in its favor. I personally am considering getting one of these someday, just haven't quite decided yet (and also it isn't available all the time), though I'd probably go with the civilian variant to really capitalize on its strengths of cargo hauling. Even in an Org, I don't intend to be in a position where it would be getting shot at too much. If I'm moving this thing as part of a fleet, I expect to have an Idris and dozen fighters/etc, not just a lone Starfarer. : )

Definitely, I really hope a lot of the gameplay you're talking about ends up existing, because that makes this a very interesting ship. There are still a number of problems with layout etc., but the biggest problem at the moment is that the intended purpose isn't in game

Farrister, one thing to note here for your viewers is the Starfarer is what I would call a Legacy ship. It was introduced early in the development of the game and even though it's a big heavy ship, it needs some serious updating to bring it up to the standards of more recently introduced ships. I do not own one of these ships, but have had several opportunities to fly them. It's one of those ships that frankly needs gunners in the turrets to defend it, as like you said, it handles like a tanker. Slow and not very maneuverable. It has it's niche in the verse, but that hasn't really been fleshed out yet, so with the exception of it's cargo capacity, it isn't a ship that's really useful yet. Once fuel scooping and refining comes into the game, I will have it's place.

If they wanted to make this ship more popular prior to a gold standard pass or just after one all theyd need to do is make the cargo containers that have been mentioned to replace the fuel canisters. If they did this before the Hull C, D, E it would be the largest capacity hauler in game and I bet many C2 pilots would flock to it. I fly a lot of bigger ships and also feel when it does get a rework it needs an upgrade to 2 Size 3 shields like what is common on most size 5 ships such as the Caterpillar, Hammerhead, Hercules Starlifters, Carrack and 600i. Afterall the Gemeni variant is the military variant and it is a substantially larger ship than the CAT, 600 and even Hercules as it pertains to mass. Currently having 1 Size 3 shield like a 400i or Constellation which are about 1/10 the mass of a Starfarer seems anemic. But I also remember the Constellation use to have Size 2 shields before a re-work so I am thinking the Starfarers shields will be upgraded at some point as well. My recommendation would be to see the Starfarer go to 2 size 3's and the Gemini variant get 3 size 3's like the Reclaimer and a beefier powerplant as well.

Originally the G was supposed to have lower capacity (2 fewer tanks or armored tanks with smaller cap), better armor, bigger guns. A cargo refactor/recalculation came out about that time, fixing the inerior capacity where we see it now, and no further mention of what was going to happen with the external stores. The design has languished, with no updates. IMHO the ship needs a complete interior rework, and a lot of what the Starfarer will be is yet to be finalized until fuel gathering/refining/refueling is completed.

100k per hour from trading seems very low. Freelancer MAX with only 120SCU can provide about 400k. With Starfarer you can get 100k from a 10min agricium run from Daymar to PO. With current economy agricium supply is limited to 180SCU and you fill the rest with cheaper stuff. So 600k per hour is more appropriate for this kinda cool, but outdated and buggy ship :D

The Starfarer is now a bit of a dichotomy. It is a very old design, that has yet to have its functions implemented. Interior layout is a mess. There have been some small interior updates, but beyond minor things, it has been an ignored ship. (For example CIG abandoned vertical ship docking collars long ago, but the Starfarer has an entire room still dedicated to a vertical dock collar.) So while it is a ship that has been around far longer than most, it is far behind everything else in design and updates, and CIG has learned a LOT about ship design over the years. The entire interior needs to be scrapped and brought up to current design. Components, exterior cargo pods, refueling, gas harvesting, and refining all have to be implemented.

You can fly solo, like I do, well and a full crew is 2-3 people for massive turrets. Having Large shields cooler, QT drives and tanks PLUS the ability to put vehicles and small ships in the bay made me buy this ship a few minutes ago.
