Looks great, you seem to have hit the nail on the head when it comes to scope. Side note, can I suggest a more whimsical movement? Seems like a lot of old games had that to offset stiff movement. I think it would do wonders for this game.

Yeah the animations are all super rough and temporary at the moment. I do plan on trying to draw more life and character out of the movements - maybe not whimsically but in a very specific way that would work with the game tonally.

I love the wave of indie games that are emulating old systems. It has this super unique balance between nostalgia and unfamiliarity that's rare in games. Really excited for this game's future! Keep it up!!

I wonder if he would... he seems very invested in videocult and I'm not sure he'd be willing to make a soundtrack for a game his studio isn't working on. He captures the sad melancholia perfectly though. This game's story is drenched in sadness and loneliness, once I tell the full story of the game and people can play it in the future. I will do a developer playthrough and talk about all my motivations, ideas, concepts and where it all came from. But the story is by far the most interesting part for me and I really want to get all the features of the game added so I can showcase that story in it's best light.

Looks great. The boosting seems op now that I see it in context. Maybe it should use more energy or be slightly slower.

I'll definitely be tweaking it more, for sure. I think when the world is fleshed out more and there's more features working together, that it'll become apparent if it needs to use more energy, be slower...etc.

Thanks, it's fun when I get to do fully hand-keyframed stuff like that from scratch. Lots more of that to come in the future, so many things are temp/rough at the moment. Excited to look back at videos like this one in the future and see the weeks of progress in one big video.

Looking great so far. One thing I suggest adding is a battle idle stance for the character whenever he's locked onto an enemy to make him look like he's ready to fight, with either his left or right side forward depending on if he's using his sword or shield or if he currently has them put away.

looking so good! it has such a unique visual language, it's clear you've put a lot of thought into how the graphics contribute to the identity of the project and not just using the style to follow a trend

I've just marathoned the devlog videos and enjoyed them a lot, it's really interesting to watch someone pull a game together like this.

It is really nice to follow you since the early devlogs and see how far you already got. Congratulations! Looking at the map and how we all know it is still early in dev, maybe you should to the big map like you did the crash site and coral tree. Make it modular but, instead of a door, have the ground contain some sort of easy way to transition. This may help later on rearranging the points of interest instead of having to redo the map for every non-prop change. Keep up the good work!

Love it. I think you need to find a way to crunch shadow resolutions down or make them blend out softer around the edges. The crisp shadow lines clash with the low-res textures and pixelated jaggies around the character.

Totally captivated by that 1.23 mark and beyond! My only criticism is actually an odd one -- the blue. The desaturated pastel colour palette works wonders in the environment but I feel to contrast with that, the blue should POP! Be that the blue of the lock-on target and the GUI or even of the character itself. Less of a Twitter blue and more a rare ware, saturated blue.

I think the blue will have to change as I plan on adding some pops of blue and purple onto the world with different coral. In tonight’s new Devlog I add a new piece of tech which is a darker more saturated blue which will probably become the main blue shade for all the UI and such.

QUICK THOUGHT: Very cool so far. I'm a former art director for film and TV, and I'm going to make a little suggestion. When we developed aesthetics for something that was supposed to be nostalgic, we would often explore a concept we call "nostalgia plus." Meaning it takes things we like from past references but also taking advantage of some modern day tech and visual development. You see a bit of how this might work in the Simpsons Hit and Run remake dev log on youtube. But the core idea is to take the old and enhance it. So far to me, in terms of how the games looks it feels nostalgic without upgrading. Things like better textures, lighting, weather systems, ect. I'm not saying you have to do all these things, just finding a hint of it it can make the game feel like fresh blend of old and new. You see this with some of the new pixel based games as well, like Backbone (2019) Again, take it as you will. Good luck!

I agree, partially because "Progress Update #1" makes it sound like it's the first video, but I think more people would watch if they know this has been an ongoing consistent thing

would love to see the other arms involved in more of the animations, like when putting the sword away. maybe even have them folded when not in use to allow more movement of the main arms. would make them feel more functional and natural.

Loving how the game is coming along so far. While I was watching this, I was thinking about how you crash land, maybe some of your gear could be broken and would need to be repaired before you can use.

Yep that’s in my script overview, you need to recover certain suit power and energy from other sources as you explore. Excited to implement that and show it to people. I think when I reveal the opening cutscene things will make more sense too.

Some of the ranged combat I plan on adding will lean a little closer to JFG I think. But yes visually inspired by JFG but plays more like Ocarina. A bit of a mix of the two.

looks incredible FireDragon, it's amazing what you were able to create in just 10 weeks. but heres my note, there isn't much point in having the original stamina bar if you have the diamond shaped one to display stamina anyway. my advice is to ditch the old stamina bar because it's ugly and just keep the BOTW like one instead.

Increase the chest muscle and shoulder size of your main character to make the 2 extra under-arms look less weird. (See Four Arms from Ben10)

the map is really confusing, the main route need to be more clear maybe look another approach to the map like nintendo, that is a good template where to start.

It is looking great mate, and most importantly, now it feels like n64 99%. The only thing that's drawing me out is the particle effects on the alien activable stuff which look too modern.
