Thanks for watching my first Devlog everyone! ▶ New Devlogs every Friday! I'd love to hear your suggestions for the name of the game and also the name of the main character. Any and all suggestions - put them in the comments! Stay tuned for Devlog 2 which is all in-engine as we get our character moving, jumping and even build our first prototype level on the first planet currently known as "The Coral Forest" which is a world which was once a huge ocean but has since become dried and only puddles of water are left compared to the once majestic oceans that covered the planet's surface.

Yo, how does this name sound: Kosmic: Strange Horizon. The MC is an explorer type, so i figure maybe a more adventurous name would be appropriate! Not sure what his name is, but perhaps it's Kos?

there are a ton of names for a space / sci fi game. im sure everyone will recommend something that isn't so baseline as "space". not saying it insultingly...uhmmmm so just as you are drawing from n64 for inspiration about how the game will be, perhaps also draw from other sci fi games or media about a name that is cool and fits. im sure you know warhammer is big right now, and the lore seems very very extensive. personally i think naming might be best left for one of the last steps..and im sure you already think that as well and agree. it is exciting to have such a project. i dont personally see enough information to give it a name yet. honestly i don't know enough about the game at all. naming wise, sometimes mixing ancient mythology with high sci fi is a good way to go..such as one of the alien movies being called Prometheus. ..but it seems "we" are still at the very beginning on this one. honestly now that gaming and sci fi and so many forms of media have become so super saturated and just completely overly saturated at this point, it definitely becomes harder and harder to have an original idea and even harder an "original" name

Lowpoly/pixel is criminally underutilized and I enjoy seeing it crop up. I'd recommend looking at the GMTK video on 'How Shovel Knight did Nostalgia' gives a lot of tips on how to look and feel like an older title without cloning over frustrating mechanics or hard to see art (prime example of the latter are the locked camera angle segments of OoT and FF where you're walking a 3D character over a compressed 2D image.) For Space64's character, he's holding a shield behind a shield, which in-universe I don't see as a useful tactic unless he expects the forward shield to collapse. I think it'd make more sense if the shields were spread out to cover as much surface area as possible. Four-armed characters are difficult because every arm needs to be doing something or it'll look or feel off, like if one arm has no weapon, it can still punch, fish for an / use an item, grip the weapon for extra strength and leverage, that kind of thing. Overall, I'm very interested to see where you take the project. Good luck! : )
@firedragon04
@firedragon04 Жыл бұрын
Thanks! Good shout on the shield too. The ranged weapon the character will unlock requires all four arms to fire a blast and two arms merge into it on one side. So I’ve very much thought about the arms thing, pretty tricky when it’s just a sword and shield setup though because those other arms should and could be doing other things.

Its so great seeing indie games going for the N64/PS1 style now, such as Super Kiwi 64 and the upcoming Cavern of Dreams. N64 has always been a favorite of mine. Being the first console I ever owned, I played many of its games like SM64, Smash Bros, Legend of Zelda, etc. There was just something about the primitive blocky character designs and environments that I always found very charming even to this day.

I recently got into Blender modeling and animation with similar goals in mind, so this devlog is a pretty cool thing too see happening. Haven't watched the succeeding videos yet, but right now I can call this great beginning. As a graphic designer, it's especially refreshing to see how the game development process is approached by a more visually-oriented person, rather than diving straight into codes and engines, so high-five on doing the moodboards and making a character straight up. As for the design, this model looks really pretty with the simple colour scheme and these neat glowing effects, I think both the N64 and the sci-fi feels are achieved well! The character itself though I would question, at least before I get to know more. I think characters in games like this have to be designed with specific abilities in mind, their looks dictated not only by aesthetics, but also game mechanics and the story. With a 4-handed character, these components may be tough to tie together. With the added difficulty of animating additional limbs, you will have to explain their necessity game-wise and give them proper utility. Obviously not critiquing your design, just sharing my thoughts and saying that I'm excited to see how you're going to handle this! For your combat, your ideas remind me of Phantasy Star Online, which I suggest you check out. Its modular system always fascinated me with its flexibility, in which weapon classes have distinctive gameplay styles, and you can freely switch and combine them in your left/right hands. Looking at your character, it would be cool to see these hands utilized to make some creative builds possible. Cheers and good luck on this project!

I really like the look of the character and i can't wait to see what the first world I'd gonna look like! Just something I noted, i would make sure all his arms are used when he's holding something, it seems a bit redundant to have him holding one sword on one side and two shields in the other, if his species has 4 arms I'm sure they would have found use for all of them in combat.
@firedragon04
@firedragon04 Жыл бұрын
This is something I've been thinking about a lot and I'm really not sure how I'm going to approach it yet. There's the argument that we, as humans with two arms, have swords we can hold with one hand and swords we need two hands for. It's very possible this alien species too has a number of different weapons some require one of their arms, others require two... or even all four. I actually have ideas for weapons you unlock that require 2 and all 4. I'm just debating currently if the initial sword you start the game with should be usable by only one of the arms and then maybe you unlock a second sword or a bigger sword that requires two hands later in the game... I'm not sure yet. One of my ideas is to make the initial starting weapon a staff instead of a sword too, and you'd hold it with your two right hands, and if you crouched down you could raise it above the shield like a roman legionary and thrust forward with it. It removes the sword entirely from the early game though and almost makes it unnecessary in general. But a staff weapon could lead to some very cool animations.

@@firedragon04 this gave me some ideas, do with them as you please. -a sword with an handle on the other side of the blade so he can hold it with both hands to block -a free hand that is used to throw grenades or other items - vestigial arms that only have the reach to be used in certain attacks?

Oh hey another N64 inspired game! Great to see more love for them. I am currently working on one as well although I am not ready to show it yet, but seeing this and Legend64 gives me the happy feelings. In my case, I'm waiting to have an actual playable demo before making anything public just so I have to force myself to commit to it, but most of the preproduction has already been done, as well as a lot of the character and enemy designs. All I can say about it is that the project name is Mino64. It's interesting to see everyone's strengths and weaknesses as you mention being less programming focused. While I am mainly a programmer, I can also handle art and 3D modelling decently enuogh, although I have no experience with texturing so that's what's holding me back the most at the moment. I believe the guy behind Legend64 (his name escapes me) has mentioned being more of an environment artist. In any case, I'm very much looking forward to this, as Jet Force Gemini was one of my favorite games growing up. I'll be catching up on the devlogs soon!

This project is so inspiring 🙌 I know you've already made 3 devlogs but I wanted to leave a suggestion for the main character design here, if you don't mind. It's regarding readability, rigging and clipping. The character by itself is already appealing. Really like the idea of an alien explorer (4 armed at that. I can already imagine the mechanics and characterization you can get from that). But you could go a tiny bit further with it. By widening the torso and thinning the abdomen and legs a bit (adjust thwe waist accordingly). This way his silhouette would be more readable, he would look more alien and the arms would have more room to move. I'm really excited to see how the game turns out

Nice, another UE Devlog series to follow! I think your character model looks awesome. As for suggestions I'd only say remove the shield from lower arm, something unique I think that comes with 4 arms would be doing things in combat that other 2-arm characters can't do. For example, if your character will have comms device/mic, he can use his lower arms to activate his radio, switch items, or use whatever he uses to heal during any other combat animations. So many possibilities. If I personally had 4 arms I'd cross 2 while slapping hostiles with the other 2. 🧐

Looks good so far, but a casual warning that, even if you are going for a "retro-feel", 95% of the time there is still somethings you should modernize - this often includes stuff like sound sliders, accessibility and resolution options - but also control schemes. Unless a clunky retro-style control scheme is _absolutely_ necessary for the mechanics and challenge of a game (most of the time, it isn't, and can be see as a lazy way to increase difficulty), the control scheme is something you *should* modernize. I think a good example of a game which "modernized" the UI and controls without hurting the original feel of the game, is comparing the original Command & Conquer to the Remastered version EA made a couple years back. Now that being said, if you follow standard conventions for controlling the character and moving around, you _could_ still have that switch to the targeting reticule system you said you want - after all it's not that much different from holding down Left-Trigger to focus your Aim in a modern shooter - but if that is the _only_ way to fire your weapon, then the gameplay should be designed in a way that you won't be firing your ranged weapon very often; This makes sense if you want the combat to be focused primarily on melee combat, which, looking at the main character design, _seems_ to be what you are going for (just want to make sure), but it doesn't make sense if you expect the player to be doing alot of shooting during combat. Then it'd just be clunky. There is some games that want the retro feel that split the difference - giving the player the option to use both a "retro" control scheme, or a "modern" control scheme, and it might be worth looking into games like that if you want to see how they try to offer the player the best of both worlds.
@firedragon04
@firedragon04 Жыл бұрын
Excellent points, thanks so much - some of that I had already given thought to... some I hadn't. I very much want that casual, accessible control scheme that marries retro and modern ideals together. The ranged abilities would mostly be for puzzle solving and could be used if you're targeting an enemy too and it would just auto shoot if you are locked on already and press the trigger. But you could also press a face button to swing your sword. Kind of like how you can press and hold to use a sling shot, bow or hookshot in Ocarina of Time or just swing your sword which is often the much easier choice. In terms of sliders, resolution...etc I totally agree, aspects like this need to be modernised and kept accessible for players, especially as it will be, at its core, a PC game.

One thing that's probably going to define the feel of an N64 game is: the player only has one analog stick. So while a joystick controls the character in a 3rd person perspective; there isn't a 2nd joystick assigned to controlling the camera. I think this particular n64 quirk can be ignored for the purposes of your project though. I recently played through the (reverse engineered) PC port of Ocarina of Time, and that game feels really great with Twin-Stick controls.

Whatever you do, I hope you add optional vehicle exploration ala Halo (actually I'm getting a lot of early Bungie Macworld Halo vibes from this, your project is that interesting). My personal wants aside, I love your alien dude. Have you considered adding a simple player character option at the start of the game to choose between either an alien dude or gal? Dinosaur Planet kind of had this where you'd play as Krystal or Sabre. An overwhelming majority of sci-fi games have male protagonists and it'd be nice to have variety.

This is exciting! I’ve found a lot of the visual charm in this era of games compensates for the lack of graphical fidelity and low polygons with fun, colorful, and exaggerated caricatures. I think that’s a significant reason Rare games are so fondly remembered. Idk if that’s the attitude you’re going for with this project but it’s one of the reasons I picked up the Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon for N64. However, I found playing it wasn’t the same as it’s peers. The clunky camera movement and severe lack of view distance while climbing Mt. Fuji was dizzying and even made me a bit nauseated. Maybe it was just my dinner that night lol, but I hope you can incorporate a sense of visual depth along with some vistas to pair with the camera movement you were talking about. The self contained zones in adventure N64 games seem to do best with a visible goal, like a giant witch’s head, that makes you say - I want to go there!

nice! a second *64 challenger approaches! I'm having a go myself, but with more modern graphics and keeping more of a 64 feel, well thats the plan at least...

Would really like a full tutorial on how you did your character and porting it to unreal. I'm currently working on making the main character for my game and it would help tremendously. By the way really like your devlogs!

Nice devlog!! Gonna follow it for sure. Wouldn’t it make a bit more sense to have a shield on each side though? Like, it looks kinda silly hiding a shield behind a shield - if u had 4 arms you’d probably have a defensive arm and offensive one on each side - at least that’s what I would imagine would be better 😆. Anyway good luck !! Loving the n64 style - I’m a Majora’s Mask and OOT lover myself - nostalgia is powerful!

You should think through what it means to have four arms. Giving a player character four arms is weird, but does it add something or is it just novelty. If the four arms are essentially the same as having two arms but awkward, does it add anything other than noise? I'd love to see you be creative with it. How does it affect animations, movement, idle stances, are there special attacks, does it have some utility, why would this species develop four arms in the first place?
@firedragon04
@firedragon04 Жыл бұрын
This is something I've been thinking about a lot, right now all the animations and such are temporary just while I'm building out features. But things like an arm cannon that requires the use of all four arms to operate, staffs and other weapons have been considered along with clamber animations that use all four arms to scramble and balance more elegantly as well as idle states, running and crouching which makes use of all four arms too.

Minor nitpick with the footage you've shown, but I think you're missing alpha-testing on the semi-transparent textures like the vines. Lots if not all of N64 games would use an alpha cutoff threshold so any pixel over a certain level of transparency would either be discarded or rendered with full opacity. This gives a hard edged look, and let them avoid having to do a bunch of extra sorting for transparent objects (not an issue for stuff like particles that might be rendered additively). Plus maybe some textures need their alpha premultiplying to avoid the white fringed edges, but that's another matter, and probably less of a factor with thresholding.

The hero character. I do very much like his look. Very N64 in geometry! Love it! Though.. I'd make each arm specialize in different themes. Two shields is a little weird. I'd do one arm as attack, one as defend, one as utility (grapple?), and the last as item.

This looks like a solid foundation. Is there a reason that the character uses two shields but only one sword?
@firedragon04
@firedragon04 Жыл бұрын
I've not fully considered the weapons yet, still early days on that. It's likely the character would just start the game with one sword and then slowly get more equipment that make better use out of the four arms.

I'm having trouble with an aspect of the modeling process. Maybe I'm just majoring in the minors, but doesn't the shade smooth option use phong shading in the viewport? I find whenever I shade smooth my models they don't have the same "smooth but rough" look as the models in n64 games. How is this corrected? Do you use a shader in your game engine that replicates the gouraud shading technique, or is the consensus among retro developers that shade smooth is good enough.
