George Lucas actually loved the idea of the movie and gave Brooks access to his VFX studio (Industrial Light & Magic) for the special effects. But he requested that he not dress Lonestar as Han Solo. So Brooks dressed him like Indiana Jones as a joke.

Prince Valium and his family were dressed in the medieval style with the hair cuts in a nod to a comic that has been in the Sunday papers since the late 1930’s called Prince Valiant in The Days of King Arthur or commonly called Prince Valiant. After over four thousand installments the story can still be found in some papers. The strips are very ornately drawn but the story doesn’t move along very fast which is probably why it was parodied with the Prince Valium deal.

The singing dancing xenomorph is an homage to a famous 1955 Warner Bros cartoon short, called One Froggy Evening, which is part of the Merrie Melodies / Looney Tunes cartoon series. The cartoon has a man finding a remarkable frog that does the same song and dance.

"Before you die there is something you should know about us, Lone Starr." "What?" "I am your father's brother's nephew's cousin's former roommate." "What's that make us?" "Absolutely NOTHING!" Fun Fact: During his scene, Michael Winslow did most of the sound effects. In the DVD audio commentary for the movie, Mel Brooks jokes that they saved around $1,000 by letting him do this. Doll Balls Fact: The scene in which Dark Helmet (Rick Moranis) is playing with his dolls was not in the screenplay. Writer, producer, and director Mel Brooks came up with the idea on the set one day and told this to Rick Moranis, who then improvised the entire scene. Star Wars Cameo Fact: The Millennium Falcon from the Star Wars saga makes a cameo appearance in this movie. Take a close look at the exterior shot of the Space Diner, and it can be spotted parked there among the other space vehicles. George Lucas got a chance to read the screenplay before production began, and loved it so much that he decided to have his special effects company, Industrial Light & Magic, help make this movie.

Mel Brooks was allowed to make this but only after promising Lucas that he wouldn’t sell any merchandise, hence the merchandise jokes. Dark Helmet’s accent change was because when Vader wore the helmet it was James Earl Jones talking but when he didn’t have the helmet on it was the voice of the actor playing Vader.

By the time this movie had come out, all three of the original Star Wars films had been released. The reason Helmet's voice changed was because they were highlighting the fact that Vader was voiced by two actors. (and another actor played him in the suit ) When Vader was in the suit, he was literally a different person, than the one that said his final words to Luke Skywalker. Now, for the medieval home setting for Vespa: I think this was playing on the fact of borrowed ideas and themes. Star Wars itself, had been compared to a western. However, it's also a lot like a fairy tale. It features a princess, knights, a black knight in particular, and a "wizard". (a term used in the movie) A lot of sci-fi productions prior to the film's released borrowed familiar stories & just changed the setting to take place in outer space. Prince Valiant was a popular comic strip set in medieval times. I think he decided to borrow that theme, for Vespa's home planet. Leslie Nielsen worked with Mel Brooks in "Dracula: Dead and Loving it" If you like Brooks films, this is recommended. A lot of Brooks' films are more like plays than traditional films. The scenes are designed to be familiar and represent concepts from other films that people are familiar with. This contrasts with a film, like Naked Gun, where the film feels a bit more like it's telling a story, and the environments feel a bit less like sets. However, Blazing Saddles breaks from this mold. In many ways, it's a great recreation of a typical western film, but with some wacky comedy and societal commentary thrown in. It's also highly recommended. Like Alfred Hitchcok, Mel Brooks often appears in his productions.

The music that the sand people were singing while they marched along with their prisoners was actually from the classic film The Bridge On The River Kwai, which you should watch. The Alien spoof with the dancing alien chestburster is a play on a classic Looney Tunes cartoon called One Froggy Evening I believe. It's about a man that finds a singing and dancing frog. You also can't go wrong with any Mel Brooks movie. Airplane was directed by Zucker-Abrams-Zucker who also made the Naked Gun movies.

John Hurt was unaware that his cameo would consist of a reenactment of the Alien chest bursting scene Lucas also refused Mel to release a toyline to promote the movie. so the merchandising scene was added. There was also an animated series called Spaceballs: the Animated Series which ran for 1 season. a few actors reprised their roles. Mel Brooks (of course), Daphne Zuniga (vespa), and joan rivers (dor matrix). Dot matrix was voiced by joan rivers but was performed by mime artist Lorene Yarnell (of Shields and Yarnell fame). They were talks about a sequel when Lucas released the prequels but nothing came of it.

Something that just clicked with me after many viewings was the graphic for the ship flying in Mega Maid's ear. In the early 80s there were a couple of side scrolling spaceship games for consoles. At least one had the space ports between levels down tunnels, tunnels that got increasingly difficult as the game went on. I don't remember the name, but the game that comes to mind was on a Texas Instruments game console. Hard to be believe but there were a lot of consoles then, those two, Colecovision, Intellivision, and others. The TI consoles actually had some really fun games.

It has a great cast, too. Samuel Jackson, Emilio Estevez, Jon Lovitz, Tim Curry, Kathy Ireland, beside some cool guests actors cameos like William Shatner, Whoopi Goldberg, Bruce Willis, Charlie Sheen, etc.

.. This movie is very good. I love it.. and I love watching people react to it, and you really were good to watch. There ARE some things that I realize come from how well things.. "aged".. as in.. WHY this movie start by saying it's chapter eleven. You kind of noted it but didn't.. "explore" it. I can say that.. as a kid born in -76.. in a family that didn't waste money on letting their kids go to the movie or rent movies (and didn't have a vcr) and it was a VERY small community that was a BIT.. behind.. when it comes to technology and socio-cultural development. So.. The FIRST time I saw a starwars movie was when me and a neighbour kid POOLED our resorted to rent a "movie-box" (a vcr.. or.. rather vcp.. it couldn't record just play-back) AND the actual "film".. and.. MY initial thought when I read the start of this movie was.. "Chapter 4".. seriously.. the FIRST starwars movie EVER made.. with NO plan to make ANY others.. said it was the fourth one in a series.. and when I saw this.. I SERIOUSLY couldn't abandon the IDEA that we SHOULD rent the FIRST three first.. but.. they didn't exist.. at all.. and this literall made the "Chapter 11" gag a SHITLOAD more humorous when I saw this spoof movie.. They call it prequals, but TECHNICALLY!! It is part OF the actual saga.. they ARE the one to three episodes OF the saga.. the fact that they didn't record them until a few decades later doesn't make them prequels, They just fulfill the part of the series that ALREADY was being portrayed as if it really already.. "Existed". I don't.. Dislike Spielberg OR his movies.. or even that he sold this to Disney, but I absolutely agree with a lot of the criticism about any and all of those things. but.. when it comes to movies that literally is satirising things?.. I THINK a lot of jokes will not quite "hit" the way it would IF you weren't part of the culture AS it happened. and when it comes to this movie, I THINK a lot of people MAY recognize a lot of the spooks done in this flick, such as references to.. Indiana Jones.. The Wizard of Oz.. THOSE two were kind of represented in a way where they also were MERGED!!.. also.. .. "an evening at the opera" and "Alien" was merged by the end.. there is no actual validation to think of them as kind of representing the same thing, it's more of a "Juxtaposition".. and.. even the reference to the planet of the apes won't mean the SAME thing to younger generations.. I watched the original movies.. this was made when those were the ONLY ones in existence.. I don't dislike the new one, but how this movie.. "hits".. will be slightly different if you watched the original movies and watched this movie when it came out.. instead of.. having experienced a lot of what happened AFTER.. and then watch it again. but.. I think (and am really happy) that this movie.. EVEN if you wouldn't think of it and experience the jokes the SAME way I did as a kid when I FIRST got the opportunity to see it.. It still seriously make sense.. it's not even the "same" jokes when you actually DO have the prequels.. which is WHY "chapter 11" was a joke that.. didn't "bring you back".. and just seemed.. not interesting and non-sequiteur in nature.. so.. you didn't get it.. but.. a LOT of the jokes that came later you DID get.. BUT!.. because of remakes of planets of the apes, and so on.. you probably didn't experience (and think about) those jokes the SAME way as I did when ~I~ was exposed to them. Which.. is just me thinking about perception and angles.. narratives.. as in.. I KIND of think "You missed the point" while ALSO thinking that.. Well. but you DID see the HUMOUR in it.. and that is LITERALLY the actual point if you boil it down.. so.. this didn't age well.. if talking about whether you.. "get it" the way people would've thought about it who watched it WHEN it came out.. BUT!.. it really DID age well because.. the things that changes the perception of the viewer really STILL leave it.. Quite funny.. it IS a decent satire of all forms of sci-fi.. isn't it?.. you may not get the "reference" as INTENDED.. but the JOKES still stand.. well.. most of them.. perhaps NOT the one "dig" with the "chapter 11"... That was a bit TOO specific to stand the test of time.. or more importantly: AFTER someone actually DID make a movie out of chapters one through three.

That's a really good point about jokes hitting you differently if you weren't a part of the culture at the time. This was absolutely hilarious and we enjoyed it, but probably not as much as those who watched it at the time because of certain references.
