I watched Spaceballs before Star Wars as a really small child. We were at a really big celebration in a school auditorium. The adults danced their asses off and the children were bored. So the janitor gathered all the children to a watch session of this. I was smitten. It was soooo amazing and I loved every minute. Bill Pullmann became a crush for many years. And the dog character is even funnier in German. He is called a Möter, half Mensch, half Köter ;)

Great review😊...I enjoyed your review more than the movie! For me the too stupidly obvious silly jokes/outfits took away the gloss from the good jokes unfortunately. You guys loved the costumes/characters I thought they were literally a one note joke, at best a 5 second giggle and then move on but no they are in your face for the whole movie. Mel Brook's first 3 movies were awesome...actual bona-fide oscar winning movies (well The Producers did) that hold together on many levels because he had created believeable characters that you can invest in and bring you through the movie. This movie actually could be the opposite of his movie High Anxiety...I didn't really remember it so I tried to rewatch it a couple of days ago. Again trying to parody a particular movie but High Anxiety had virtually no jokes in the first 20 minutes or none that hit. It starts off in an airplane & airport and remember how awesomely jam-packed with great things was Airplane...High Anxiety nothing - flat as a pan-cake. At least Space Balls tries...shoehorns in every Star Wars reference it can good or bad. Your review is good...you cherry pick the best things and set them up nicely. They don't overstay their welcome. To sit through the whole movie...enduring the onslaught of pantomine costumes and schlock it would turn on my Critical Drinker mode😀 ...(and I still haven't made it past 20 minutes in High-Anxiety).

My favorite scene is still the introduction of the "Spaceballs 1". A spaceship glides past majestically until it gets silly. And as a cherry on the cake there is the writing on the stern: "We brake for nobody". I also love the scene in which Princess Vespa is supposed to shoot at the guards. First she touches the gun with pointed fingers as if it were a rotten fish. Then a shot brushes her hair and she gets so angry that she takes the gun and mows down all the attackers with a single salvo. A real Bad Ass moment.

When film came out parody movies not were much prominent and was very innovative as take memorable elements of star wars to make this to stand on its own, the brilliant writing of mel brooks make the scenes and lines work very well almost to honor star wars and not make fun of it, also great cast for all characters and impresive production to be just a parody movie, as others here said this is better than the movies disney made years later
