Jared, your advice around the 21:20 mark to take a deep dive into 10 thought-provoking songs rather than skimming 100 is pure gold. I really appreciated the example songs you gave-such a solid foundation for deep learning! Would you consider curating a list of essential songs for each major genre? Not 10 for each genre, but maybe 5? Classics, or others that truly push a guitarist to think critically about their playing. Thanks for the incredible content and the inspiration!

I can confirm that it does work. I struggled with a fingerstyle change from basic C major to Eb and back again. I just could not get it done cleanly, spent ages just repeating it over and over, so basically gave it up. Came back to it 2 or 3 times with little improvement. Then re discovered it a couple of months later and after a few practices, could get it almost right, quite easily. Another couple of weeks and i had it under my fingers, So now I only practice the same thing for 15 - 20 mins, then move on. Thanks for sharing Jared.

love these type of topics in relation to music. I’ve found the interconnectedness of how music has influenced the other parts of my life incredible, and it would only make sense that there is so much outside of music that can greatly benefit the way we express ourselves on the instrument.

I like that way of thinking!

Thanks for this Jared. Really helpful and I have found the theory you expound to be true! Also it's more fun to enjoy a smorgasbord of new songs, new techniques and consolidate, refresh and review than just relentlessly hammer away at one piece. Thanks for the inspiration and sharing, Peter

Hi Jared. A month ago. I asked a similar question, about cycling through Chord Melody Magic, Systematic Chord Soloing and Nailing the Changes, The answer you gave was very close to the details provided in today's podcast.I feared I would be restarting each course as I moved between. I now can say that space repetition really helped me to quickly remember and move forward. A week ago I stumbled on interleaving practice, when I finished that session and wanted to continue practicing. It felt great and I've been using it everyday. After listening to this podcast it all makes sense and I am even more stoked about practicing using these methods. Great job explaining the science.

Hey! So great that interleaving practice has helped you work through the course material! Thanks for letting us know 😊

I definitely am going to implement stress enhanced, interweaving, and rotating into how I practice. Thank you Jared

Hi Jared. Thank you for taking the time to research and explain these learning techniques. I'm glad to say that I have been unconsciously doing this because I get tired or bored just focusing on one piece. Now that you have so eloquently identified what I have been doing, I now have a "formula" to use to enhance my learning rather than by happenstance. Happy Holidays!

Excellent! I'm glad the two approaches coincided! Happy holidays.

Regarding Spaced Repetition, one of the biggest lessons I've learned from your videos is the value of the Pause and Rewind buttons! Another gem is the Speed option in the YT settings, I can slow the examples down in order to both see and hear what I'm struggling with more clearly. And lastly, the Clip Feature is so handy for isolating a specific section, lick, or riff, and looping it at any speed for as long as needed. I have literally had some of your vids open in my browser for weeks, until I've grasped any given concept at my own pace, without frustration or burnout. (Well, maybe a little...) :-) Thank you!!

Nice! I'm glad you're able to get so much out of the videos :) Thanks for sharing those features for those who don't know about them yet.

Thanks! Yes, I'm sure interleaving practice generally is more beneficial. I practiced tennis years ago, this type of training, chaos not predictable at all, I think it was great, but not for me, I hated it, so I quit. To me, it is so important too feel it, to get a deep feeling before moving on. And I get it, it’s not effective if you compare, but to me it’s the most effective, else I probably won’t do it at all! :)

I just finished the book "Make it Stick: The Science of Successful Learning", ( Brown, Roediger, McDaniel) and this book covered all these topics and more and was very interesting and useful.

Hello. I am at this stage right now, where I practice learning this song on KZbin. I spend about half an hour on it, rest for half a day, and practice what I have learned earlier. An added help has been, knowing the Scale on which the tune is going to be played, I practice the scale a few times every day, which has helped me to understand the structure of the song being learned while resting, my mind floats through the scale and I find myself making up new songs mentally, which I then practice on guitar Teachers should show the Scale structure before teaching the song, I find it helps to understand the constructed song easier. Your lesson has opened up my practicing pattern now, I am retired and can not afford your Patreon membership, sorry I will definitely look out for more from you on Y Tube

Jarad, thank you for this lesson and information. It answers a lot of questions regarding how to structure my practice time. Honestly, it was getting stale and boring. Asking myself, why am I even learning this song? Other than knowing that it’s not always the song that’s the goal, it’s exposing yourself to different techniques used throughout music and it can be adapted to songs you do want to learn with similar techniques to play them.

Of course. Great to hear that you're restructuring your practice time!

You have convinced me that spaced rep & interleaving is the way to go and I will use these more conciously in my practice! I have been rotating thru the three classical pieces in your arraingment pack that you have done lessons on. I would love to add a few more, e.g. Minuet to the rotation. Will you be doing videos on other pieces in the pack? Are links to your song-pack videos listed anywhere on your website?

Sweet! Yeah, thanks for asking. I have a playlist for the song-pack videos here: kzbin.info/aero/PLho65cYn4nF2765ov8TLfG29cdNuWvLv9

This has come at just the right time for me; I have distilled all the pieces I know down to just those (forty!) I would play if I could learn nothing else and play only them. But I have been having trouble getting to grips with them, how do I keep forty tunes I love, and want to be able to play every day, in playable condition? I feel happy now that it's a long-term project of re-visiting and forgetting, until it's done, however long that takes.

Sounds like a wise outlook! Happy these concepts came at the right time for you :)
