When I signed up to work the mining colony on Ceres I was told I could bring one duffel bag of my personal items. I don’t know what Zeb had to give up to stuff his banjo in there, but I’m glad he did. It’s why I don’t mind sharing vapor with him whenever he’s low

Reminds me of this little redheaded beaut who worked with our ship's mechanic on this old maintenance barge I signed on with after the war; made a plucking instrument out of old pipes and actuator cables leftover from assorted repairs. Played a sweet, sweet tune on that thing. I wonder what she's been up to these past few years...
@cavscout6b10 ай бұрын
When were you on Ceres? I was there from 2038-2040. Don't remember a Zeb, but I only worked the complex for about 5 months, then corporate sent me to Annex #4 when they struck that huge tribidium deposit. The work was hard, the hours long; But it wasn't a bad job and the pay was REALLY good. Thought about doing another year, but a wife, kid, and maintenance support job on Mars nixed that. Besides; I heard it's not the same after ASTRO-Sci bought out Amalgamated Mining. (Remember the "questionable" fried chicken they served in galley on Thursdays? LOL)
@Blue-Gold_Crusader10 ай бұрын
@@cavscout6b I choose not to think about that "fried chicken" that got served... was never on Ceres, but it ain't the only place they tried to serve that swill. Not being big on poultry my own self, I steered clear; but I knew of this fella who ate it and was laid-up in medical for quite a spell...

I come from a long line of miners, all the way back into the 1700s. Well, I was the first in our family to get a job mining in space. My dad and granddad were coal miners but I wanted more. The USCSS recruiter said it'd be a great time. Great pay. I did three tours and made a fortune. I was set to go up again a fourth time but danged if my gall bladder didn't start to act up. My chief, Ripley, told me I had to stay behind this time. If that wasn't fate I don't know what is. Something bad happened up there. All hands were lost except Ripley and the cat. I knew the Nostromo was cursed somehow. She never would tell me the whole story.

It was an early morning-probably? I'd long since lost track of Earth time and indeed any sense of it at all on this strange planet of seemingly eternal twilight. I only knew that now was the time to get going for a long day of work in the mines, finding all the materials - rare on Earth - that seemed to litter this place. The distant glow of the factory lights was strangely warm and inviting, beckoning me to come in, remove my thick suit and sit behind the screens and controls, coffee to my left, and joystick in my right hand; ready to start drilling into the "earth." As I walked along the barren, rocky ground, the sound of a banjo player - at first distant - grew louder until it drowned out the background noise of pistons and drills pounding and ripping up the rock. I saw him, or perhaps her, with a visor reflecting the stars and the Astra Nebula, blocking out their face. He, or she was sitting on a pile of discarded rock left over from an operation from many years ago. It had formed a perfect perch for the banjo player to sit on, like a chair, or a sitting stage. I stopped - only briefly, mind you - but long enough to soak in the ethereal sounds of the banjo breaking through my thick suit to deliver the sweet music to my ears. KRRST! "Mighty fine day!" her voice crackled through my headset. She didn't even miss a beat. I smiled, though she probably didn't see me either. I didn't see a bowl, or a helmet, or anything to put money in, but I've always believed busking is as legitimate a job, worthy of recognition and compensation, as any other. I dropped a few coins by my fellow worker's feet. KRRST! "Thank ye kindly, Sir!" Her voice beamed with delight. "Y'all have a great day!" KRRST! I nodded as best as I could though the thick suit and made a motion as if to tip an invisible hat. Then I continued, with a new spring in my step, to Mining Op. Vehicle 417...

this compilation is a little wacky, but fun. I really enjoy like, the ethereal feel of some of the other compilations, but this really feels like I'm just hanging out on some backwater colony waiting for my next job and repairs. I dig it. Feels like it would fit right in the Cowboy Bebop episodes. The the more ethereal tracks give you a feeling of just cruising along, on your way to the next fuel station in the star system, and this is like you've finally landed and are shaking off your space legs with some good food and music.

We don’t carefully ease up, over and down snowy mountain passes anymore. There’s no adjusting brakes, barely edible biscuits and gravy or bad cups of coffee. No DOT, no CB radios. But here and there, in the last bit of darkness before that big red fireball rises it all still feels the same as it used to. It’s just my horse and I. My machine. My partner in crime, in tune with each other and operating as one. Peace, solitude…purpose. Things aren’t the same as they used to be but whether it’s land or sky there will always be someone out here hammered down, jamming out and delivering that last load of freight on Christmas Eve. The old days are long gone but old ways and old vibes live on.
