Thanks so much! Usually when I hear people attempting this sound the pulsating sound is a bit too short. I had the same problem with all the gear I tried to create this sound. With the JD-Xi the sound decays just the right way thanks to slicer effect algorithm.

@Spacemartini4 жыл бұрын
Thanks alot! Actually it's the slicer effect on the synth that is the essence on this one. This sound does not require arpeggiator at all. Pete probably used a square wave LFO to control the volume on the pulsating rhythm. I haven't been able to this well on any other synth mainly because square LFO usually cuts the ending of the sound too harshly. On the JD-Xi the slicer effect with the right variation left the right amount on tail to the sound. What an awesome synth! What boards do you have?

Keep working on it. You'll get it perfect sooner or later. WE used to do this as a cover,..in the early 80s,. I think it took quite a few months to get it....especially the last part of the song. I think I wore a cassette player out going over and over note by note trying to figure out the notes. WE now know he just played the chords and his synth actually changed it to stacatto notes. Back then we had to play it chord by chord. I think you did better than most of the idiots nowadays trying hard. A few of the "known" big bands have tried to cover it,....and it's embarrasing to even watch them. They are not even remotely close.

@Spacemartini3 жыл бұрын
Awesome, JD-XI is so good synth! For a non synth player i'd say start with the real time controllers and effects and figure out what they do to your sound. The analog part is an excellent playground to get into synthesis 👍

@Spacemartini So to get the We Dont Get Fooled Again "sound" I see 70s organ. and the "on" lights on the Roland are: Octave UP. Digital Synth. Keyboard. Cutoff LPF. Rate Pitch. Effects 1-Compressor. Effects 2-Slicer. Delay. Reverb. If I turn all that on and make adjustments will I be close...or is there some hidden menus/settings deep in the synth that I need to dig up a manual off the internet. Thanks for the help. Paul

There's a guy Gig Performer, who demos how to do it. Might be worth a look..? Either way, sounds good... IMHO, he doesn't have the reverb, whereas your's maybe doesn't quite have the depth of sweep...? I dunno, I'm a guitarist, the synth stuff is a little over my head, BUT I would say, keyboard amps weren't a thing for another decade back then, so it's very likely the original was played through a guitar amp. I've had spectacular results putting a B3 plugin through an AC30 amp sim with a Leslie cab sim., when I did a backing track for Whiter Shade of Pale.
@Spacemartini3 жыл бұрын
Thanks, nice discussion👍 I believe Pete did just plug the Lowrey organ to synth which created the pulsating and the filter sweep. I do hear my sweep could be a tad stronger.

Looks like simply 70s organ patch, then slicer and lfo. The lfo control on this is annoying to be honest, could do with a few more knobs, especially for the ADSR. I mean it has an anolog synth in it, but doesnt have enough control.

@Spacemartini4 жыл бұрын
I doubt it has the same slicer effect algorithm as the JD-Xi which really made this sound. For example I cannot achieve this sound with my Roland Fantom G which might have a more similar fx-engine as V-synth. The filter sweep should be easy to do with any synth but to get the pulsating sound right that has been the issue fir me.
