The older I get, the more I realize that we are either unique in the universe, or there is other intelligent life forms like us, but they are in the same "boat" as we are. Namely, distances between star systems are simply too large to traverse. They, if they exist, are bounded by the same physics we are.

Yup unfortunately we will never find aliens. Maybe there are aliens out there that can travel to us in an instant but that's breaking the known laws of physics. Trying to explore space with a chemical rocket is like trying to explore the ocean with a life preserver.

I'm surprised you didn't mention the Dark Forest theory. You could do a whole follow up video on that. For people who are unaware, the basic idea is that other forms of life are typical hostile to each other like how wild animals are in Earth's nature. For example it's very rare that a dog and a monkey try and get along and establish a relationship and communications - it's more likely that a dog will try to steal the monkey's food. Perhaps interstellar life ignores each other, maybe even deliberately hide from each other like camouflage, because some animals in space are hostile.

In fact, what does the 21st century human pose as a threat to any alien species today if they invaded our northern hemisphere air space for an hour? We do not have the technology to meet them in their playing field of space, with an arsenal of weapons, with captains that can handle it! None. I think there are two likely reasons. 1: Advanced civilizations tend to be wiped out by their own technology. Or 2: Advanced civilizations do not want to be found since the default reaction to finding another advanced civilization is to annihilate them.
@jpp4566 Жыл бұрын
2 is very unlikely. If a civilization is intelligent it’s illogical their first reaction would be to annihaliate another alien civilization. The intelligent decision would be to use it to their benefit Odds are it’s more likely they would be astonished to find one considering how rare it probably is, and want to learn about it, communicate with it and work together with it to try and expand upon the universe.

Usually it's the more advanced civs taking advantage of or wiping out the less advanced civs, at least on Earth. If they're aware of us I think they might see us as still too primitive and off limits for interaction. Alien species could also have immunity to diseases that we have no immunity to and would completely wipe humanity out.
@skygge1006 Жыл бұрын
@@jpp4566 or the logical decision would be to strike before they can strike. Similar to nukes on earth maybe the most advanced species have planet destroying weapons and thus when they find another advanced species they must wipe them out to preserve themself. They can’t allow the others to have an opportunity to strike or they will either be stuck in a stalemate where they must rely on the other not striking or they strike first. The reason this wouldn’t apply to earth is because we all knew of each other first and the first nukes weren’t planet destroying.
@jpp4566 Жыл бұрын
@@skygge1006 if another intelligent species had planet destroying weaponry that implies they are far more technologically advanced than we are. Especially if it’s in the case that they possess the technology for interstellar travel. In that case humanity would pose basically no threat to them and that gives them even more incentive to feel less threatened by us and thus less likely to attack for no reason. Regardless I still feel like an alien civilization wouldn’t attack humanity for no reason. Obviously we wouldn’t know the moral and ethics code of these different beings but advanced civilizations capable of interstellar communication or travel would have likely overcome the challenges of their own societal development and attained a certain level of cooperation and stability. Therefore, it's more reasonable to assume that they would be interested in establishing some form of peaceful and mutually beneficial interaction with humanity.

I recently heard of a theory that to me would really make sense. It goes like this, the reason we don’t see aliens is because of a similar reason like the isolated people of the North Sentinel Island are cut off from the rest of the world through a multinational agreement with India. The island is under India’s jurisdiction and they made it illegal to enter as they don’t want to interfere with their lifestyle unless absolutely necessary and want to study the natural evolution of a human species when isolated. All the other nations are aware it’s under indias territory so they don’t interfere as well. Now to the people on the island, there are no other people in the world because they never see us even tho we are all around.

In doing this the civilization could be all around us but we simply lack the ability to detect such a small energy signature, or possibly they would have the technology to prevent a primitive civilization from detecting them unless they wished to be. This is more reasonable than any other explanation including the ones listed in the video :)

I’m not betting on advanced civilized life. There have been billions of year’s of life coming and going here on earth and it wasn’t until very recently that we decided to put down the pitch forks long enough to concentrate our efforts to get to the point of where we are all now at. And with that said, we’re still trying to persuade people to be educated. Bottlenecks from environmental phenomena to our own species extremes have set us back time and time again. The biggest question is ; how long can we advance before we succumb to extremism that values neither cultural history or science ? We’re still trying to understand the Bronze Age collapse in the Mediterranean. How many times have we seen “sea people” type of events ? For no other reason than power and material, we’ll forfeit and forsake all other considerations. This hasn’t changed. Now take this understanding of more complex life (humans) on earth with all its many incarnations of external and internal bottlenecks and paste it elsewhere in the universe. It’s by random chance that we’ve even made it this far (technologically) in these last few hundred years imo. We’re only fooling ourselves in thinking we’re all on the same life-craft of thinking. There are elements that need convincing before we rest on our laurels high up in some ivory tower. The past is an excellent representative for the future.

I don’t believe it is either naive or wrong to base that belief on the evidence we so far have. We are after all a part of the cosmos and made from very nearly the same elements of every star in our galaxy. That is to say; we’re not so special as to be made of something that doesn’t exist elsewhere, but the way in which circumstances helped develop mankind as we know it through environmental challenges, competition and bottlenecks made us what we are. I'm a big proponent of the dark forest theory, the rare galaxy (habitable galaxies) theory, rare technology theory, and the Great filter/dooms day technology hypothesis regarding the Fermi paradox and why we hear the 'Great silence '. The dark forest theory can be applicable to where civilizations out there simply do not communicate and try to hide their techno signatures from potential malevolent civilizations. The rare galaxy theory could also be a factor as active galaxies or Starburst galaxies tend to have much more Gamma ray bursts due to high mass star formation and that can sterilize any potential civilization arising in those galaxies. The rare technology hypothesis can be applied to where life is common but only a very select few reach technological levels where they can communicate with others or be detectable viab techno signatures. In this case, we could be one of very few in the milkyway that have reached this exclusive level. The doomsday technology scenario is more scifi but also applicable. A civilization can easily create some technology that when used, unforseen consequences arise and downgrade that civilization or flat out wipe it out when used.
@amindamok Жыл бұрын
The fermi paradox is such a simplistic idea of what is required for life to not only start but to then flourish. The real requirements are so astronomically difficult to line up exactly right that its is unlikely any life anywhere in the universe will ever have the ability to meet another civilization. That doesn't mean that life cant have existed somewhere and can't have reached unimaginable technological development. But there are hurdles to overcome that makes it unlikely that a civilization would ever make contact. There are so many pitfalls that prevent it happening. For instance, the idea of the Dyson Sphere itself is a trap that leads only to isolation due to the logical progression of that technology. In a system where a civilization has truely harnessed the power of their star what more would they need. They would be able to sustain for a billion or billions of years without ever having to travel to another system. Without a need life doesn't evolve to the next step. It could be these civilizations do exist but we still need billions more years before they will need to travel far enough to find us or us the same.

Do the math. We don't know how likely life is, or how likely intelligent tool-using life is. But we are getting some pretty firm indications how unlikely these things are. Frankly, it already seems like the odds of even one species getting as far as we have in a galaxy the size of our own may be somewhat less than one. Especially given how quickly we came about once conditions were right for us. And it took us 4.5 billion years to get here, on a planet that will be uninhabitable for complex life in only one billion more. Reasonably values might--might--be one species like us in every 750,000 galaxies similar to our own. Due to the expansion of the universe it is unlikely we will ever meet them or even find evidence of them. Consider that, in just 3 decades of trying we are finding planets in a sphere with a radius of 17,000 light years, nearly a third of the width of the Milky Way Galaxy. We are even beginning to examine their atmospheres. Imagine where we will be in 300 years, or 3,000, or 3 million. Yet for 3 billion years plus, our planet would have stood out as a planet of interest to anyone that was looking. They aren't looking. They aren't looking because they aren't there. Sure there could be other explanations, but employing them is really just rationalization due to wishful thinking.
